This week in WCBB 12/17/14

If you didn't see DoggyDaddy's Dailies for 12/17/14, don't miss it!!
Welcome to my weekly look at the world of WCBB.

No change in the top ten. A very quiet exam week for most schools.

Let's take a look at the top ten week in review. I'm using the coaches poll as it's the most current.
#1 South Carolina (8-0)
Last week #1
Last Week: vs Savannah State W 111-49
This Week: @ Hampton Dec 17, vs. Central Michigan Dec 20, @ Liberty Dec 21

Leading Scorer A'ja Wilson - 14.1
Leading Rebounder Alana Coates - 8.4
Leading Assists Tina Roy - 3.9

Not much to say here. A'ja Wilson took over the team lead in scoring with her 23 point effort as the team scored more than 100 points for the first time this season. With three yummy cupcakes coming up, look for no change next week.

#2 UCONN (6-1)
Last week #2
Last Week: No Games Played
This Week: vs. No. 25 Depaul
Dec 19, @ UCLA Dec 21

Leading Scorer Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis - 17.0
Leading Rebounder Kiah Stokes - 9.0
Leading Assists Moriah Jefferson - 4.7

No games so not much to report. DePaul on Friday in Bridgeport should be a fun game before playing UCLA at Foxwoods.

#3 Texas (7-0)
Last week #3

Last Week: vs Southern W 80-42, vs Northwestern St W 74-34
This Week: vs. Mcneese St Dec 17, vs. No. 4 Texas A&M Dec 21

Leading Scorer Kelsey Lang - 13.1
Leading Rebounder Nneka Enemkpali - 8.6
Leading Assists Celina Rodrigo - 2.9
Exam week means schedule weak. Easy wins versus Southern W and Northwestern this past week. The big news is freshman Ariel Atkins has an injured ankle and will be out indefinitely. I'm sure they are hoping to have her back for Sunday's big game against No. 4 Texas A&M.

#4 Notre Dame (8-1)
Last week #4

Last Week: @ DePaul W 94-93, vs Michigan W 70-50
This Week: vs. Saint Joseph's Dec 21

Leading Scorer Jewell Loyd - 23.2
Leading Rebounder Taya Reimer - 6.2
Leading Assists Lindsay Allen - 4.1
The luck of the Irish was strong in the win against DePaul. I don't think a team could miss more foul shots with their eyes closed that DePaul did in that game. It certainly was exciting, but DePaul really should have won that game three or four different times. Two disappointments to date for ND are Mabrey and Reimer. I'm sure McGraw was looking for more from them. Loyd had a career high 41 against DePaul. Madison Cable had a breakout game with 20/10 against DePaul earning a start against Michigan where she had 9 points 4 rebounds and 4 blocks.  Notre Dame is really missing their star freshman Turner but they won't need her this week against Saint Joseph's.

#5 Texas A&M (9-0)
Last week #5

Last Week: @ SMU W 70-62, vs Houston W 94-55
This Week: @ No. 3 Texas Dec 21

Leading Scorer Courtney Walker - 16.3
Leading Rebounder Achiri Ade - 7.2
Leading Assists Jordan Jones - 6.9
In what should have bee an easy week, Texas A&M struggled big time against a mediocre AAC team in SMU. Led by their freshman Australian twins Alica and Keely Froling, who both had double doubles, SMU gave the Aggies all they could handle. After an easy win against Houston, A&M is ready for the big game against Texas in the battle of two undefeated and top 5 teams.

#6 North Carolina (8-1)
Last week #6

Last Week: vs Appalachian St W 84-52, vs. No. 16 Oregon St L 70-55
This Week vs. Maine Dec 19, vs. Elon Dec 21

Leading Scorer Alisha Gray - 17.4
Leading Rebounder Stephanie Mavunga - 8.3
Leading Assists Latifah Coleman - 3.8

After the upset loss to Oregon State Tuesday night, UNC will be moving out of the six spot next week. Allisha Gray led the Tar Heels with 20 points and 10 rebounds. UNC shot a season-low 28 percent from the floor and made only 1 of 14 3-point shots. You think that was bad? North Carolina made only 12 of 26 free throws, and 7 of 20 in the second half. UGLY. Two easy games this week should allow them to shake off a bad loss.

#7 STANFORD (5-2)
Last week #7

Last Week: vs Santa Clara W 82-43
This Week: @ Chattanooga Dec 17, @ No. 11 Tennessee Dec 20

Leading Scorer Lili Thompson - 19.7
Leading Rebounder Kaylee Johnson - 9.0
Leading Assists Amber Orrange - 4.0
After their two week exam break, Stanford beat Santa Clara convincingly as they try to recapture their play from earlier this season. Their terrific front court freshman Kaylee Johnson had 22 rebounds in that game while their senior leader Amber Orrange led the team with 20 points. Lili Thompson is still in a shooting slump. They are gearing up for Sunday's big game in Knoxville with another tune up Wednesday night against Chattanooga.

#8 Kentucky (8-1)
Last week #8

Last Week: vs Middle Tennessee W 78-62, vs Belmont W 71-55
This Week: @ No. 13 Duke Dec 21

Leading Scorer Jennifer O'Neill- 15.0
Leading Rebounder Azia Bishop - 7.1
Leading Assists Makayla Epps - 2.9

Kentucky had two home games that they won handily of not as dominating as they would have liked. MTSU is a very good team and O'Neill led the Wildcats with 22 points as they never let the lead slip under double digits. Azia Bishops had a double double against a game Belmont team. Big game on Sunday at Duke. They will have to play better to win that one.

#9 Baylor (6-1)
Last week #9

Last Week: vs Idaho W 88-70, vs SF Austin W 96-57
This Week: vs. No. 19 Syracuse Dec 19, vs. No. 18 Michigan St Dec 20

Leading Scorer Nina Davis - 23.3
Leading Rebounder Nina Davis - 7.4
Leading Assists Niya Johnson - 8.1
Sounds like a familiar theme with the top ten. They dominated SF Austin as they should but they kept the game against a very mediocre Idaho team closer than it should have been. Nina Davis is continuing her march to 1st team AA with 33 points and 21 points. Baylor plays two ranked teams so they will have to play their best but they are at home so I expect them to win both games.

#10 Louisville (8-1)
Last week #10

Last Week: vs Old Dominion W 100-46
This Week@ Grand Canyon Dec 18, @ No. 24 California Dec 21

Leading Scorer Myisha Hines-Allen - 15.1
Leading Rebounder Sara Hammond - 6.6
Leading Assists Mariya Moore- 4.2
Only one game and Louisville dominated as they have against all the weaker teams. Other than the indifferent performance against Ball State and the collapse against Kentucky, Louisville has been as dominating a team in WCBB as anyone else. Big game on their West Coast against Top 25 team (maybe) California. I expect them to come out on top.
