Well, I got the old laptop working again, so I was able to blog again!!!  I told you yesterday that I was suffering from a cold and of course I made some chicken soup. I spilled a little on the pad of the lap top and that part of the laptop stopped working. I thought it was done. BUT......I found an old mouse and I was able to maneuver again.

Now, the pad is working again! Maybe it dried out? I still need to get a new one soon. But I'll try to nurse this one through the season.

I'm leaving the videos for those who haven't seen them yet. I've added the game highlights!

Well, now we know. UConn will be playing UCLA in the Sweet Sixteen game in Albany. I'll have a lot more before Friday's game. This should be a high scoring game and Geno will have his team working hard on blocking out on the offensive boards. UCLA has been a monster in that part of the game!

***************************************************

I gotta say, UConn fans are just crazy. Not all of them, but wow, I can't believe how down so many fans are after the Buffalo game. I see some crazy shit being said.

My favorite ones are where the fans think they know more about who to play in a game than Geno. Now, this has been going on all season. Fans want to see Geno play the bench more. And during the season, sometimes I even agree with that. But now it's Tournament Time and you just don't screw around putting players with serious weaknesses in a tough competitive game.

The talk of the web is asking why Geno didn't play Coombs at all and ONO more. Here is one example and my response on one web site.

"Unless coombs is hurt she should've been in the game. Dangerfield and walker were no shows in this game and one of them should've been on the bench in favor of coombs. The right move was to play coombs and ono for both of them."

and my reply

"Hahahahahaha

Ok...I've stopped laughing.

Dangerfield scored 11 points and handed out 4 assists
Walker scored 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds and handed out 2 assists.

Several questionable foul calls took UConn out of their normal game the last 14 minutes of the game.

Buffalo shot 32% from the field and 21% on three pointers.

Please tell me what Coombs would have added to this game that would have been better than what Dangerfield and Walker added. She has scored 27 points ON THE SEASON. So it couldn't have been offense.

What could have Ono done with more minutes?

No offense....ok...a little offense, but please stop coming up with things that Geno should have done, particularly when UConn won and was really never threatened?"

Yeah, that was a little harsh, but really???

Here is Geno's take on that game.

"Winning these games are not easy.  It's a struggle, and it is supposed to be a struggle."  "One game does not define what you are going to be the next game."

Amen Brother Geno, Amen!

The close games at the half for the most part ended up not so close.

Sixth seed South Dakota State pulled away late and beat third seed Syracuse going away, third seed NC State held Kentucky to nine fourth quarter points in winning 72-57 and in a game that was a blowout all the way, First seed Notre Dame put the hammer to Michigan State.

In the game that interests UConn fans the most, sixth seed UCLA was able to beat third seed Maryland 85-80. So, how does a team that shoots 36% from the field and 29% on threes score 85 points? Well, maybe 27 offensive does the trick? I really like this Bruin team but I don't like them enough to root for them...lol. Their point guard Japreece Dean is very much like Dangerfield only more offensive oriented. She was 4-9 on threes and scored 22 points. But the star for them is sophomore forward Michaela Onyenwere. She scored a career high 30 points and added 6 offensive rebounds. She will be a handful against the Huskies. Maryland lost this game for the most part at the foul line. They made only one of two several times going 15-25. Goodbye Brenda...we hate to see you go!

Part I

If you watched the UConn vs Buffalo game last night, you know the Bulls have a good player named Dillard. Apparently, she finished the season 2nd in the nation in scoring. Certain UConn fans were impressed with her play and predicted the Huskies would lose if Asia Durr from L'ville had a game like Dillard's. What game were they watching? Lets set the record straight.
1. Dillard took 23 shots from the field and had 9 free throws. That is 32 scoring chances and she had 29 points. That is a NISE of -3.
2. Dillard's 23 shots are equal to the 23 shots the other four starters took. She took 50% of the shots taken by the starting five.
3. She had 7 assists. Nice, but Pheesa had 8.
4. Dillard went 3-10 from three-point range. That is 30%. Sqeaks went 3-6, or 50%!
5. Dillard had 7 rebounds. Good for a guard. But, Megan had 7 as well. Plus Lou and Pheesa had 9 and 16.
6. She went 8-9 from the charity stripe. So what, Lou went 8-10.
7. Her 3 steals were offset by her 3 turnovers.
8. Shooting 9 for 23 from the field is only 39%.
9. Dillard missed 14 shots. That is the most of any player on the court, for both teams.

The important metric isn't how many points you score. It is how many shots you take to score those points AND how involved you get your teammates.  Dillard played well last night, but not great. Watch the replay if you don't believe me.
Part II

Cierra Dillard scored 856 points this season and finished 2nd in the nation in scoring with an average of 25.2 pts per game. She started and played in all 34 of Buffalo's games. Pretty impressive, right?  No, not really. Let me expalin:

1. Dillard took 671 shots from the field this season. That is more than the next two highest players, combined. She is a volume shooter.
2. Overall, Dillard made 38.6% of her 671 shots. Every player on UConn's team, except Mikayla Coombs, shot better than Dillard.
3. Dillard took 308 three-point shots and only made 34.1% of them. Every starter from UConn, except Pheesa, shot better than Dillard from 3 point range. Add in Kyla and Molly, who were also were more accurate from 3 pt range.
4. Dillard had 129 turnovers this season. Her assist/turnover ratio was 1.5, which is mediocre. Crystal's ratio is 3.12, which is spectacular.
5. Napheesa took 486 shots from the field and made 62% of them. If she had taken 671, like Dillard, her per game average would have been 27.6 points per game.
6. Dillard missed 412 shots from the field this season and made 259. Lou and Pheesa combined had 414 misses and made 493 baskets. That is 234 more makes with the same number of misses.

Dillard is a good player, but not the great talent some seem to think. She took 31% of Buffalo's shots this year. She only made 38.6% of them. Pheesa took only 22% of UConn's shots and made 62% of those attempts. Now that is great..!!

Go Huskies..!!

  1. The Gino dance might have scared the team CD needs to dance which would take the hex off the team, I think. Great job on evaluating the UConn team.

  2. Great blog as always! We were at the game and the fouls being called were insane. 46 fouls? Yikes. Definitely impacted the way they had to play and the flow of the game. Reading some of the UCONN fan posts is so disturbing and negative! I've stopped following them. They know better than Geno??? Lol righhhht
    Go UConn!
