My wonderful and talented cousin Ted Fink has a songwriter competition for one of his songs. He sent out the instrumental and we were supposed to send in lyrics. The song is called Riffin’.
Riffin’ is when you just make up music without lyrics for example on a guitar.
I made it to the final four!!! Now it’s time for the public to vote.
There are four entries and mine is No. 3 and it’s called Riffin’. I should win just for having the right name!!!
So here is the link. Vote early, often, and for No. 3.....me!!!

And check out his books. Ted is a wonderful storyteller and author!

Well, now we know. Katie Lou is out for the AAC tournament. Sigh.....

Ok...on to the games!! In the last game without her, Geno started Olivia Nelson-Ododa in her place. And after a few minutes he pulled her and didn't put her back in until the second half. I think the message was delivered as she played a solid 18 minutes in the last two quarters and contributed a ton on defense. She blocked 2 shots, stole the ball 4 times and had 6 rebounds. And helped hold South Florida to 18 second half points. She should start again against East Carolina.

UConn beat East Carolina on February 6th 118-55. Samuelson had 31 points in this game and East Carolina had no answer for her. Here are the game highlights.

It would be silly to think UConn would win this game in the same fashion without Samuelson in the lineup. 118 points is out of the question. But with Collier, Dangerfield, Walker and Williams, all who scored in double digits in that game, UConn should be able to put at least 80 on the board. And with the team focusing on defense, I could see East Carolina struggling to get to 50. I'll just say UConn by 35+.

Speaking of East Carolina, the Pirates beat SMU in OT 50-48 to move on and take on the Huskies.  Yes, it was a 50-48 game. It was 46-46 in regulation and then there were only three baskets combined by the two teams in the overtime. I can't imagine having to sit through that game. Can you smell the UGGY Award warming up???

Let's look at the losing team first. SMU was 19-67 from the field for 28.3% shooting. They were 1-6 on threes and had 19 turnovers and only 6 assists on their 19 baskets.

The winning team? Hardly better. They were 23-76 for 30.3% from the field, 1-16 on threes, 18 turnovers and only 6 assists on their 23 baskets.

Wow..this was a true UGGY game!!! Congrats to both teams for abusing the rims and the fans.

The AAC tournament starts today for the cellar dwellers. Saturday, UConn will play the winner of East Carolina (15-14) vs SMU (11-18). UConn is 10-0 versus both ECU and SMU. The Huskies are also 15-0 in the AAC tournament and winners of the last five titles. To win the AAC title, UConn needs to win 3 games in 3 days on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The games are basically home games for UConn with the other teams coming from Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Kansas, etc...  Should help the Huskies..!!

UConn comes in averaging 82.9 points per game. Opponents only score 54.9 points per contest. Other key stats include 41.2 rebounds per game, 20.3 assists per game, 13 made free throws per game and 8.5 steals per game. As a team, The Huskies shoot 49.3% from the field and 73.5% from the free throw line. Opponents averages are much lower at 34.1% from the field and 64.5% from the charity stripe.

Get ready for three games in three days..!!

Go Huskies..!!

Plenty of games on the docket and there were some great games to watch and some, like what I described above, not so great to watch. I believe there were a few OT games and the ECU/SMU games shows that OT games doesn't necessarily mean a good game..lol.   Michigan and Wisconsin went to double overtime before the Spartans pulled it out. 73-65.  Missouri let Kentucky back in the game after dominating most of the time, and Kentucky pushed the Tigers to overtime. But the Wildcats could not hit the key basket and lost 70-68. Sophie Cunningham was phenomenal with 29 points, 7 in the overtime period.

There were a couple of good battles between ranked teams where the lower ranked team beat the higher ranked team. No surprises here though. Conference tournament games always ignore the rankings.

No. 18 Syracuse beat No. 16 Miami 92-85 in a high scoring affair.
No. 25 UCLA beat No. 20 Arizona State 73-69. UCLA is on fire!

In a BIG upset, unranked Arkansas, 18-13 coming into this game, upset No. 12 South Carolina 94-89 in a shocking result. South Carolina is the four time defending SEC tournament champion but out they go!

In one of my favorite games, Tennessee rode 26 turnovers to the loss against Mississippi State 83-68. If Tennessee hadn't hit an unusual 9-19 on threes, this game would have been a 20+ point loss. I still expect them to make the NCAA tournament, but at 19-12 and 7-9 in the SEC conference, I don't think they deserve it.

  1. If our offense is as disjointed as it was against USF w/o KLS, we’ll struggle to get past 65 points. Pheesa wil see double teams and that tactic will upset our normal offensive flow.
