Early in the season, a tremendous amount of criticism was directed at UConn's three point defense. After DePaul and Notre Dame each hit 13 threes against the Huskies, the alarm was raised to 11 on a scale of 1-10. Some negative nellies went as far as to pinpoint 3 pt defense as the reason UConn might not win the National Championship. Here's how the Husky defense improved vs the 3 point shot and proved the critics wrong. Again...
1. In the first 10 games, opponents shot 68-190 from three pt range. That is 35.8% and included both the ND and DePaul games.
2. In the next 10 games, UConn held the other team to 53-182 or 29.1% accuracy.
3. For games 21-32, the Huskies held opponents to 55-190 or 27.6% from outside the arc. (See the pattern... )
4. Once the NCAA tournament started, the defense improved even more, holding six opponents to 34-127 or 26.8% from three range.
5. In the two Final Four games, UConn kept two very good three point making teams to 8 combined baskets and 21.1% accuracy.
For the season, UConn held 38 opponents to just 29.9% accuracy on 698 attempts. Geno and staff identified an early weakness and fixed the problem. The result was another undefeated season and the 11th National Championship. And critics were just plain wrong...
Go Huskies..!!

Editor's note - I've been talking about this for the entire season. In three consecutive games DePaul shot 13-29, ND shot 13-20 and Colgate's Paige Kriftcher shot an insane 7-8. That's 57.9%. Crazy!
The UConn message boards went nuts, all so worried about UConn's "weakness" against the three.
But if you removed only those three games, UConn's very good 29.9% becomes 27.4%, which puts them in the top 30 in the country.
