Another big upset in WCBB Sunday. Iowa State defeated No. 8 Texas 57-56.

This was a BAD loss for Texas. They had a nine point lead in the first half that was seven at the half. They increased the lead to nine early and still had a seven point lead with 12:00 left in the game. At that point, Iowa State mage their run, going on a 12-3 run over the next 4:30 to take a 48-46 lead.

After an exchange of a few baskets, Texas took a four point lead with 55 seconds left, 57-53 and I'm sure they were feeling pretty good. But they failed to score again and with 17 seconds remaining, Nikki Moody of Iowa State was fouled and she made both. Brooke McCarty missed a 3 pointer with 2 seconds left and it was over.

With their great rebounder, forward Nneka Enemkpali injured and out for the season, I'm not sure this is such a big upset after all. But it is a big hit to Texas's seeding. They have now lost four out of their last five games and need a win bad against Oklahoma, who is 7-0 in the conference.

So, how tired are those old Tennessee fans that had to stand for the first 8 minutes of the second half, waiting for Tennessee to score.   Ah....one of my favorite subjects, Tennessee. What an interesting team. And what an interesting fan base. I have read multiple times that the Vol fans think this is the best Tennessee team since Parker in 2008. Well, let's take a look at the stats.

2014-15 W-L 17-3, PPG 72.6, RPG 43.2, APG 14.8, TOPG 13.6, FG% 41.9, 3PT% 33.3, SPG 10.5, BPG 3.8, OPPG 53.4, OFG% 36.6, O3PT% 29.5

2013-14 W-L 29-6, PPG 77.9, RPG 45.6, APG 15.3, TOPG 16.5, FG% 45.7, 3PT% 36.0, SPG 7.8, BPG 3.9, OPPG 62.9, OFG% 36.6, O3PT% 30.9

2012-13 W-L 27-8, PPG 77.6, RPG 43.3, APG 14.6, TOPG 15.9, FG% 44.9, 3PT% 35.5, SPG 8.9, BPG 4.1, OPPG 63.9, OFG% 37.6, O3PT% 29.4

2011-12 W-L 27-9, PPG 74.0, RPG 43.5, APG 14.6, TOPG 15.1, FG% 43.7, 3PT% 33.8, SPG 8.0, BPG 4.6, OPPG 60.1, OFG% 37.0, O3PT% 27.4

2010-11 W-L 34-3, PPG 77.3, RPG 46.3, APG 14.1, TOPG 15.3, FG% 46.6, 3PT% 37.8, SPG 7.6, BPG 5.3, OPPG 56.4, OFG% 33.6, O3PT% 27.5

2009-10 W-L 32-3, PPG 74.3, RPG 43.4, APG 15.7, TOPG 14.5, FG% 46.0, 3PT% 37.6, SPG 6.8, BPG 6.5, OPPG 57.1, OFG% 35.0, O3PT% 31.5

2008-09 W-L 22-11, PPG 69.9, RPG 43.5, APG 13.5, TOPG 17.2, FG% 41.3, 3PT% 32.5, SPG 7.5, BPG 4.7, OPPG 63.7, OFG% 39.3, O3PT% 33.4

Whew...that took a little while to type..!! I have no life...

So, what have we learned here? Well, there were 6 seasons prior to this one and after the last championship in 2008. I have listed 11 different categories. Here is where this years team compares to the others:

PPG (6), RPG (7), APG (3), TOPG (1), FG% (6), 3PT% (6), SPG (1), BPG (7), OPPG (1), OFG% (3), O3PT% (4)

So, as we can all see, defensively, and handling the ball, they actually have a case. But if you exclude the 11 loss team of 2008-09, they were dead last in four categories and average in three.

I guess they just look better to the fans.....it certainly can't be based on facts.

Ugly Game Of The Day

It's back to the AAC for this game and it's not surprising that when the best defensive team in the country meets one of the worst, the Ugly Game of The Day would appear. UConn obliterated Cincinnati 96-31. On top of scoring only 31 points, Cincinnati shot 23% from the field, 17% on 3's and 16 TO's. And UConn called off the dogs for as least half the game. It could have been even uglier.

Congrats Bearcats, but it's no shame to win this award when playing UConn.

Honorable Mention

Illinois State (3 time winner and 0-16) 35 points, 24% FG  14% 3FG  24 turnovers
Fairfield 33 points, 20% FG, 10% 3FG, 11 turnovers
Tennessee (because I can) 59 points, 34% FG, 17% 3FG, 18 turnovers
