It pained me to remove the link to Rich Elliott's blog in the Post. What a shame. Wishing him the best of luck in whatever happens in the future. A great writer. He will be missed.

Lots of Top Twenty Five losses Thursday night.

No. 13 Duke beat No. 21 Syracuse 74-72. After blowing a late 15 point lead, Duke was able to score when Greenwell rebounded her own miss and was fouled. A 91% shooter from the line, she made both. Syracuse had 3 shots at the end on rebounds of missed shots and couldn't convert before time ran out. Syracuse shot THIRTY EIGHT 3 pointers making 13. Brianna Butler shot 7-19 on 3's and hit the key shots to tie Duke late. It was fun to watch Duke slowly lose the lead. Good for them for holding on.

No. 8 North Carolina was spanked, and I mean spanked by unranked Pittsburgh on the road 84-59. Yes, a 25 point loss for a top ten team to an unranked opponent. UNC is a candidate for Ugly game of the Night. I'll have to look at other box scores, but UNC was terrible. This result is a real head scratcher.

Gray is an amazing player, but she can't do it by herself. They shot 30% from the field and 23% on 3's. 17 TO's as well. Pitt manhandled UNC on the boards with 54 rebounds.  UNC is now a former top 10 team.

Miami beat No. 4 Notre Dame 78-63. This is as much a shocker as the UNC loss. Miami was terrific in the first half, going on a 25-4 run to end the half and gain a 40-20 lead. ND cut the lead down to 6 on a three point play by Turner, but Miami followed that with a three point shot to push it back to 9 and it was never closer than that.

ND expected so much more from Mabrey this year, but she appears to have regressed this year. She is a good complementary player but not one that you can rely on to be a big part of the offense. She was 0-4 from the field and 0-3 on three's. No rebounds and no assists.

Miami has a terrific pull up jump shooting team, at least in this game. They shot over 50% from the field, breaking ND's long streak of holding opponents to 50% or less. And it breaks the 30 game road game winning streak in a most unexpected way. It was also Notre Dame's first loss in 22 ACC regular-season and tournament games, plus its first loss to an unranked opponent in 62 games going back to Feb. 12, 2012, against West Virginia.

The big news out of Golden Dome land is that former UConn recruiting target Taya Reimer did not make the trip to Miami for "personal reasons" and then announced her intention to leave Notre Dame and transfer to another school. More to come on that.  Here is the announcement

South Carolina played like the #1 team tonight beating Alabama 102-60. They hit 64% from the field and 52% on 3's. They had 22 assists and only 7 TO's. They spread around the scoring as well with 6 players in double digits. With the remaining schedule before playing UConn, I don't see them losing before that. They do play Kentucky and Texas A&M but both are at home.

  ********************************************************
No. 17 Iowa  lost to unranked Illinois, 73-61 on the road. They weren't terrible, shooting 40% from the field and 3 pointers. But the 22 turnovers were a killer. They were outscored by 17 in the second half only scoring 26 points.

Ugly Game of the night

I think we have a winner in Arizona. Playing their in state rival Arizona State, they only scored 14 points in the first half and 41 for the game. They shot 27% from the field and 14% on 3 point shots. They also had 17 TO's and only 8 assists. It was a tough call not to put UNC in here, but the 14 point first half was the kicker.
