Here is my UConn/KSU post game report.

***************************************************************************

No. 4 Maryland continued it's tour of the cupcakes of WCBB with another "tough" game against Loyola (MD), beat the Greyhounds 79-60.

Doing a little boxscore analysis, the game was not the most impressive win for the Terps. They jumped out to a big halftime lead of 46-21 led by their excellent post player Brionna Jones. That women is a handful, as UConn found out last year. Also their senior guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough was a big scorer in the half. Then it appears Maryland was a little disinterested in the game. Loyola outscored Maryland in the second half 39-33. This against a team that lost to Cornell, Fairfield, Pittsburgh (by 30), Columbia and Delaware. This is the problem with playing only cupcakes. You fill up on sugar and carbs, and then you want to take a nap.

One more weak opponent. But on December 29th (one day before my birthday!) they will finally play a worthy opponent in UConn. More on that game later.

After that game, they won't play another ranked opponent until almost two months later on February 20th against Ohio State. That would be 14 consecutive games against non-ranked teams. And for the season? Three ranked teams at the time they played. And only two ranked today. That is an unbelievably weak schedule.

Will it hurt Maryland in the long run, even if they defeat UConn? I have to believe it. You can't make a diamond without putting pressure on the coal. You can't harden steel without the right process.

Katie Lou Samuelson, Kia Nurse and Napheesa Collier are all averaging over 32 minutes per game this season. Nurse is actually playing 35 minutes every contest..!! In several recent games, these three and Gabby Williams have basically played the whole game. Despite superior conditioning, that much action can impact performance and play. For example, Uconn shot 58% for the first half against K-State, but only 40% in the 2nd half. Three point attempts were most affected, with the Huskies hitting 7-14 (50%) early and falling off to 1-9 (11%) in the last 2 periods.

KLS was only 1-5 from 3 point range in the last half of the game & Gabby was 1-5 from the field. Crystal Dangerfield, who played 37 minutes total and started the game, was clearly tired and shot only 2-7 and missed all 4 threes. One good stat was the Huskies only committing 7 fouls versus 9 assists in the last two periods. The other positive was the defense UConn was able to mount in the 2nd half, despite the fatigue. K-State's four starters, other than Breanna Lewis, scored 1 basket in the 2nd half. Crystal shut down Wesemann, who had 3 three point baskets in the first 20 minutes, without a single point in the last 20.

After holding the Wildcats to 8 points in the 1st period, to open a 17 point lead, UConn kept K-State to only 11 pts in the 4th. For the game, UConn had 13 steals, forced 16 turnovers and out rebounded their opponents 35-28. Tired or not, it was a superb defensive effort by the Huskies.

Enjoy your time off Huskies..!!

  1. you can see that the girl was very tired in the second half. that is why geno slow it down with 5 min left in the game. it time for geno to see what kayla has to give him during prime time in a game, butler is too stiff

  2. If Geno doesn't show you who ______ (fill in the blank with your players name) it is because Geno already knows what that player is going to give him under the particular circumstances of that game
