Many top 25 games Thursday Night and some interesting results!!!
I said in the last few blogs after No. 2 Notre Dame games that their shot roster and lack of a true point guard would eventually hurt them. Well, they walked into a buzz saw when they visited No. 3 Louisville. I hadn't seen the Cardinals play yet this year and I was impressed. They have some talented kids on that roster. But in this game, it was only two players. They totally destroyed the Irish 100-67 behind 36 from Asia Durr and 31 from Hines-Allen. Those two players just dominated Notre Dame. Louisville shot an amazing 65% from the field and was 11-17 on threes. They were on FIRE!
Watching Notre Dame, they just looked lost on both offense and defense. There best offensive player, Ogunbowale, just disappeared in this game. And the Irish got next to nothing off the bench. The big problem is that even down over 40 points, they have no one off the bench to rest the starters.
Now, I'm sure they will bounce back against an overmatched team going forward, but this game will sit with them for a while. After all, it wasn't UConn that beat them by 33, it was friggin' Louisville!
No. 9 South Carolina bounced back from a bad loss in their last game to beat Auburn 71-63. The best news in this game is that A'ja Wilson didn't foul out and Coach Dawn Staley didn't get thrown out. Other than that, it was a pretty unremarkable win over a mediocre Auburn team. Wilson had a very good game with 19 points and 11 rebounds and 5 blocks. The Gamecocks used a 30-10 first quarter to coast to the win, but that means they were outscored 53-41 over the last 30 minutes. Not very impressive at all.
No. 11 Maryland lost to Michigan State 82-68. Worse, they lost at home. MSU took the lead at the very end of the 1st quarter and never lost it. Maryland never got closer than 7 points once the Spartans pulled away. Taryn McCutcheon was 6-10 on threes and had 25 points and handed out 5 assists. She is a terrific player. Maryland was just awful in this game with 24 turnovers. And they were only 5-17 on threes and 11-17 on free throws. Brenda has some work to do.
Can you see me smiling? Maybe hear a little chuckle? No. 17 Texas A&M beat No. 6 Tennessee 79-76 in overtime.
It was an interesting game. Both teams had leads all throughout the game but I don't think anyone had more than a 7 or 8 point lead at any time. Both teams had chances to win the games but could not make a basket when it counted. In overtime, Tennessee took a 2 point lead on a Mercedes Russell basket with 19 seconds remaining but A&M was bailed out when Tennessee freshman Evina Westbrook fouled Danni Williams while she was shooting a three point shot. Williams hit all three free throws to give A&M the lead with 7 seconds remaining. Then Westbrook turned the ball over with one second left. Williams hit two free throws for the final margin.
Freshman Chennedy Carter took another 31 shots in this game. Coach Blair has to get her to take better shots. She almost shot A&M out of this game completely. She contributed to A&M missing 16 consecutive shots to end the fourth quarter and start of the OT.
The Lady Vols continue their road trip by visiting South Carolina and then on to Notre Dame before they complete this tough four game schedule by taking on Mississippi State at home.

By David in Naples!!!!!
Some UConn fans are demanding an investigation into Azura and her 3 point shot. They question, with a straight face, whether she should be even trying 3 point shots, as if Geno should bench her if she tries just one more. Seriously, the Huskies are 14-0, Z has turned into a double-double machine and idiots want to pick on her for trying to work out the kinks in her long-range game?
Let's review the facts:
1. Z has tried 33 three-point shots in 14 games. She actually made 5 of them, so she missed 28 threes in 14 games. That is two misses per game on average.
2. Her shooting percentage, WITH THE 33 THREES, is 57.9%. That is 2nd on the team to Gabby's 58.1%.
3. UConn has taken 939 shots in 14 games. Z's 28 misses are 0.03% of the total.
4. The Huskies have missed 440 of their 939 shots. Are any of the 440 misses under investigation?
Doesn't Geno always push players to expand their game? He wants Katie Lou to post up. He wants Gabby to shot the 15-foot jumper. If he is ok with Z trying a couple of threes a game, why would fans have an issue? They shouldn't....
Go Huskies..!!
