Our incoming recruits for the class of 2018 Olivia Nelson-Ododa (left) and Christyn Williams (right) had a great week. Here are what they did and a couple of videos!!!

Olivia Nelson-Ododa credited with her third straight double-double. Also with ones on 1/23 and 1/24. 

ONO had 19 points and 11 rebounds in the 1/24 game.

Numbers Part I - 

Free throw shooting can help win or lose a game. The two key variables are how often you shoot free throws and at what rate do you make them. UConn has tried 313 free throws while opponents have only attempted 181. That is 42% more chances for the Huskies..! The 313 attempts are amazing when you consider the Huskies have been fouled 316 times. That is almost one free throw for every time UConn is fouled.   The biggest reason for this correlation is how often the Huskies are fouled while shooting.

The Huskies have committed 248 fouls but put opponents on the free throw line only 181 times. Geno always says, "Don't foul the shooter." When opponents do goto the free throw line, they make only 67.4% (122-181). Meanwhile, UConn makes 74.8% of their charity stripe tries (234-313). In fact, six UConn players make over 70% of their free throws. Surprisingly, the best free throw shooter right now is Megan Walker at 79.4% (27-34). Right behind are Kia and Z at 79.2%. Katie Lou is at 78%, Crystal is close at 77.3% and Pheesa rounds out the group at 71.4%.

In summary, UConn shoots more free throws because they get fouled more often when shooting, 313 vs 181. They also make a higher % of their tries from the charity stripe, 75% vs 67%. The result is 112 more points for the Huskies over 20 games. That advantage comes in handy during close games.

Numbers Part II - 

UConn has scored 1,819 points so far this season in 20 games. The team leaders in points are:

1. Kia = 302 pts
2. Napheesa = 297 pts
3. Azura = 296 pts
4. Katie Lou = 255 pts
5. Crystal = 224 pts
6. Gabby = 207 pts

If you factor in the minutes each player was on the court to score those points, the leaders change. Here is how many minutes each Husky played to score each point: (mpp is minutes per point)

1. Azura = 1.47 mpp
2. Katie Lou = 1.60 mpp
3. Pheesa = 1.93 mpp
4. Kia = 2.14 mpp
5. Gabby = 2.52 mpp
6. Crystal = 2.65 mpp

Crystal and Gabby remain at the bottom of the list, but the top four is completely inverted. The punch line, it isn't just how many points you score, it also matters how many minutes you play to get those points.
