After another slow start, it was a great win for the Huskies in their rematch with Memphis.
Like with the first game against Memphis, I'm not doing a full post game report. But here are some video highlights and some thoughts.
You can see after those early few minutes where UConn looked a little off that they just turned up the defense and it made all the difference in the game. Dangerfield was all over their point guard, forcing her into many mistakes. Samuelson jumps passes causing a few turnovers and the game was pretty much over.
Even though she had a tough first half, I thought that freshman Megan Walker continued her growth and contributed nicely in this game. She missed her first 5 shots, but none of those were bad shots and a couple went in and out. After that she scored 10 points on 3-4 shooting, 2-2 on threes and 2-2 from the foul line. Her YTD stats are looking better and better. She is shooting 46% from the field, 40% on threes and 79% from the foul line. She is only going to get better folks.
It was great to see Katie Lou back and she looked no worse for the wear. Her ankle didn't seem to bother her at all. She managed 17 points, 6 rebounds and 3 early steals. A few more days off until the Saturday game and then five days before the South Carolina game. She should be fine for that tough matchup.
Gabby, on the other hand, really is suffering from that hip flexor injury. She is missing shots she made all season long before the latest flare up. Geno wisely played her only 16 minutes. I expect limited minutes against Tulane so she can give it her all against the Gamecocks. You KNOW she will play her heart out.
Stevens had another double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in only 22 minutes. She would be averaging over 20 PPG if she had starters minutes, but this was an average game for her in time on the court. If it's her defense that is keeping her minutes limited, I hope she starts to figure that end of the court out. UConn could use her for 25-30 minutes per game next season.

Well, the fans have it figured out again. In a thread called "Napheesa needs to use rosin", poster after poster have decided that she is having a terrible season based on this game.
This is the same game that she had 19 points on 9-15 shooting, She also had 12 rebounds, 3 offensive and 2 assists, a steal and a block. Nice solid game in only 25 minutes. So what did these genius say?
"I believe Collier is still injured and just trying to fill a role as best as possible. Before, she was always flying all over the arena getting to balls no one else could dream of getting to. Her offensive arsenal was unmatched. Now, she is the last up the court. She doesn't even go after long rebounds. She has extreme difficulty with her shot. She has a painful look on her face. Collier must be hurt. "
" it doesn't look like she's having a lot of fun out there"
No, she is not paying as well as last season. But rosin???

Another Top 25 upset. No. 19 Oklahoma State lost at home to a terrible Iowa State team. Worse, the Cowboys were at home for this poor effort.
They had a 40-30 lead at the half over the Cyclones. This is the same Iowa State team that lost to Northern Iowa (you never want to lose to a "directional" school), Central Michigan and Drake. And coming into this game Iowa State had lost 7 of their last 8 games.
Tennessee fans like to point to the Lady Vols beating Oklahoma State earlier in the year as a big win over a ranked team. Well, they weren't ranked when they played Tennessee and I'm not sure why they are ranked not. See how I brought this back to the Lady Vols?

UConn "only" made 6 three-point baskets in the defeat of Memphis today. But since they tried only 14, that was good for 43%. Both Kia Nurse and Katie Lou Samuelson had 1 each and Crystal made 2. Best of all, Megan Walker went 2-2 from outside the arc. Here is an update of the top career 3 point shooters at Uconn. Kia and Katie are moving up the leaderboard.
1. KML 398 threes
2. Diana 318 threes
3. Maya 311 threes
4. Ann Strother 290 threes
5. Wendy Davis 279 threes
6. Bria Hartley 259 threes
7. Renee Montgomery 254 threes
8. Katie Lou 232 threes
9. Kia Nurse 225 threes
10. Met Thomas 224 threes
Kia passed Mel Thomas with her effort today against Memphis. Katie Lou needs only 22 threes to capture 7th place from Renee. Bria is certainly within range for both with a strong 2nd half of the season. By the way, Crystal now has 64 threes with 2 1/2 season still to go.
