Both No. 2 South Carolina and No. 3 Notre Dame had slow starts against overmatched opponents.
SC defeated Clemson 67-41 behind 18 points from AA Tiffany Mitchell. Clemson did a nice job on the big SC front line, but the Gamecocks played excellent defense against the Tigers forcing them into 19 turnovers. The score was 18-4 in favor of South Carolina when Clemson went on their one and only run, closing to 25-19 after outscoring SC 15-7 over the next six minutes. But the Gamecocks methodically pushed the lead to thirty points by the end of the fourth quarter. A solid win for South Carolina.
Notre Dame defeated Toledo 74-39 that was also closer than you would have expected in the early minutes. The score was 14-11 at the end of the 1st quarter and 19-15 with 4 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. The Irish went on a 10-2 run, fueled by Lindsay Allen's and Kathryn Westbeld's fine play to take a 29-17 lead at the half. Notre Dame found their offense and continued to play typical Notre Dame defense to dominate the second half 45-22.

I watched the Tennessee-Penn State that was played in TBA Wednesday night. They had a camera I the Tennessee locker room.
Coach Warlick starts off by saying "We want to be relentless. Does everybody understand that? That makes up for whatever....(short pause)...whatever else we do. Relentless...".
And as she is saying this, you can see four players sitting there, most of them with a little smile and only one of them is even looking at Warlick. She goes on.....
"You want to get out of the shadows of the past? You make relentless be a part of your game. We haven't done that in a long time. This team has the capability of doing it..relentless.
Wow....I have to say I am stunned by that pep talk. No wonder they have struggled with such talented teams over the last few years. Sure there were injuries. All teams have them. But this is some really lousy coaching.
She said "Makes up for whatever else we do". Talk about a negative attitude. She basically said she expects things to happen that they have to make up for by being relentless. Crazy talk! Geno coaches for perfection. Warlick coaches to have them do things they have to make up for.
Then she trashes every Lady Vol team over who knows how many years. Since Parker graduated? "You make relentless be a part of your game. We haven't done that in a long time. " I'm sure the seniors and juniors are thrilled about that.
So, how did the game go?

Tennessee defeated Penn State 74-66 behind a terrific game by the Senior Bashaara Graves. Graves had 24 points on 8-8 from the field and 8-8 from the foul line. She added 13 rebounds. Russell had an excellent first half and fnished with a double double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Penn State stayed with Tennessee the entire game, and were actually tied at 64-64 with 5 minutes left in the game. Tennessee took the lead on a nice offensive rebound by Deshields and put the game away at the foul line.
Brianna Banks was injured early in this game and she had been Penn States best player. So for Penn State, who was 6-24 last season, to stay in this game without was impressive. And something Tennessee fans can't be happy about.
Some player observations -
There was a lot of talk about the new Diamond Deshield. But she looks a lot like the old Deshields. In 18 minutes she took the most shots, with 11. She took the most shots by far on UNC in her freshman year. I thought she looked less explosive than remember and a little tentative I her defensive play.
Cooper is the real deal which bodes well for Tennessee. If Deshields will let her run the team, she can do what Allen did for Notre Dame. She is quick, strong and confident.
Graves finally got on the court and played one of her best games ever. Tennessee needs her to show some senior leadership both on and off the court. Being suspended for the first game doesn't help.
Russell looked good. If she stays healthy she is a top 5 center in the country. Still a little slow and if you get your body into her, you can force her to foul. I'm impressed with her stamina.
Carter looks to have regressed some. She will lose time if she doesn't pick up her game. She was sloppy with the ball and a tentative shooter. Just like her first two years.
Dunbar played a good team and sat most of the game. I have to give her credit for her NBA like double holster celebration after her one three pointer. You don't see that much in WCBB. But she is still not quick enough to play good enough defense and stay on the court. Same for Middleton. She just can't play defense at this level.
I guess you can tell I'm not impress with Tennessee. Hey, just calling it like I saw it.

Makayla Epps of Kentucky had the first triple double of the season. She is one of my favorite players and will make a run for an AA team at seasons end. She had 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. Great game!!!

A fair and balanced review of the PS-Tennessee game. The Lady Vols have a LONG way to go to be a final four participant. Their next game vs Syracuse should provide more evidence of where they are as a team. Based on last night's game only,, I would say certainly outside the top 10 but it is still early in the season.
