In case you missed it, here is my UConn/Ohio State Post Game Report.

*******************************************************************************
The Geno show with Bob Joyce was on WTIC Wednesday night. Here are the highlights from my friend Cat. Thanks!!!!

Geno on game Monday night:  pleasant surprise.  We expected to play well but with the first game you're not sure.  We didn't expect to win by that margin. We came out better than anticipated and looked good doing it.

Our players are pretty confident, certainly the 4 returning starters from last year

Gabby is sneaky quick.  Players on other teams are not sure since they haven't seen her play yet.  They think there's a lane for a pass and she closes that lane quickly.

Gabby goes and gets rebounds.  Some have rebounds come to them but she goes and get rebounds.   There's a difference.  Some players get rebounds others are rebounders.  She's a rebounder.

Moriah -- we ran same stuff over and over again and she kept getting inside and to the basket.  She just needs a small opening.  She picked up where she left off in the NCAA tournament last year.

On Moriah's pull-up jumper, Geno says it's a tradition for point guards at UConn to make that shot.  He mentioned Jen, Rita, Sue, Bria, Renee.  Sue may have been the best.  Geno said we spend a lot of time that shot.  It's not a shot that comes easy for Moriah because she hadn't practiced that shot.  Most players don't practice that shot.

Geno liked that stewie scored from a lot of spots.  She was active and pretty aggressive.  24 pts on 15 shots is pretty good.  Some players need 24 shots to score 24 pts.

On the team's defense Monday night:  OSU's guards take a lot of shots.  Some of the same shots they took against us went in against SC (not sure I agree). Key was getting 2nd foul on Mitchell early.  You can not stop her from taking shots but you can make her play defense and get her on the bench with fouls.  That's why I get on my guys about not fouling.  Can't help us on the bench.  I use to tell Diana that all the time.  Diana fouled out of 3 games as a freshman. I told Diana you don't become a legend while sitting on the bench

Some of the fouls called on Stewie were ridiculous.   On the double foul the refs decided something happened, we don't know which one was at fault so we'll call a foul on both players.  Stupid.

On the freshman, Geno said Collier was pretty good.  She got in to the game and her first shot was a baseline jumper, one of the toughest shots to make. She does a lot of nice things.

Lou got 5 rebounds, had a nice back door cut for a basket.  She needs to understand there is more to life than making 3s.  Everyone expects her to make every 3 she takes.  We don't want her to think that's all she needs to do.  Once she settles in she's going to be okay.

Saniya -- we weren't sure if she would play.  At shootaround Rosemary said she's going to let her go.  If feels good then we'll let her play in the game.  Geno still wasn't sure he would play her in the game since she hadn't practiced but she wanted to play so her put her in.

Saniya practiced most of today so we're feeling pretty good about Saniya.  Geno explained her injury -- the IT band is a tendon that runs down the leg and it's really painful when it gets tight.  It's not easy to play when it's bother you; he thinks Saniya is now good to go.

2016 recruits

Crystal -- first player out of Tennessee.  Very explosive guard, can do a lot of things, had great summer with USA BB.  Will remind people of Moriah, they're similar (but different in some ways)

Irwin -- mom played at Branford HS and had great career at Penn State.  She's like Morgan, can do a lot of things well and play different positions.  Not as experienced around the basket like Morgan.  Plays with a lot of energy.

Molly -- reminds him of Saniya.  She's very fast with the ball, she goes by people, makes shots from the perimeter and has great instincts.  She's going to be tremendous.

On current roster, Saniya might be fastest but Moriah is quickest.  Kia doesn't look as quick as she is - puts head down and goes to the basket and usually gets fouled.  Like a hockey player, heads to the net.

I watched the ESPN3 broadcast of the Tulane/(6)Florida State game. What a fun game to watch. I was so proud of UConn's conference sister play Florida State to tough.

The game was close for the first 35 minutes. Each quarter was extremely close. Florida State finally wore down Tulane, pushing a 65-60 lead with 5 minutes left using a 10-5 run to take a 75-65 lead with 48 seconds left. But even then Tulane did not give up. I loved how Tulane came back to make it close every time FSU tried to create some space. Tulsa went on a quick 7-3 run to close the game. I'm not sure we don't see a different result if the game was played in New Orleans.

Shakayla Thomas was the difference maker with 26 points and 8 rebounds for FSU.

The 78-72 final is one more example of an improved AAC.

Baylor defeated South Florida in another good game for the AAC in a losing effort. Baylor ran out to an early lead, going ahead 23-14 after the 1st quarter. USF slowed Baylor's momentum with a solid effort in the 2nd quarter closing to 34-28. The game was similar as the FSU/Tulane game. USF refused to go away, getting as close as 59-58 with 2 minutes left. Unfortunately for the Bulls, time ran out before they could catch the Bears. Baylor win a tough one, 66-63 with Courney Williams missing a three pointer to tie with 1 second left on the clock. Williams scored 11 points in the 4th quarter and finished with 23 points. She did take 29 shots. She must be exhausted!

Another great effort on the road by an American Conference team.

It's time for fans of other conferences to stop putting down UConn for playing in a weak conference. Add in the Temple win over Florida and the AAC is a much better conference to date than last season.

was electric tonight. 34 points to lead all scores!

With recruiting in her rear view mirror  and additional confidence with her USA experience, I expect a possible HSPOY run for UConn 2016 recruit Crystal Dangerfield.
