In case you missed it, here is my UConn/Ohio State Post Game Report.

*******************************************************************************
Only five top twenty-five teams in action Friday night. And there were two very exciting games in regards to how competitive they were. In regards to level of play? Not so much.

*******************************************************************************
The soon to be out of the top twenty-five Chattanooga (a future UConn opponent) beat Southern Mississippi in overtime 53-48. Led by 20 points by Jasmine Joyner, the Mocs won in spite of shooting 34% from the field, 4-17 on threes and turning the ball over 20 times.

Chattanooga was down 25-20 at the half and 37-30 after three quarters. They used a 14-7 fourth quarter to tie Southern Miss and hit a few timely free throws to put away the Golden Eagles.

***********************************************************************************

The Tennessee-Syracuse game was between the No. 4 Lady Vols and  the No. 25 Orange. But to tell you the truth, I didn't think the play was much better.

Tennessee won this ugly game 57-55 basically because Syracuse couldn't hit an open shot the last 5 minutes of the game. They were 0-8 from the field, 0-5 on threes and 0-2 from the foul line. The missed free throws would have tied up the game with six seconds left in the game.

Now, when I tell you these were open shots, believe me, they were open shots. Syracuse did a great job swinging the ball around to the open player and Tennessee did a horrible job closing on the shooters. They Orange just missed and I'm sure they are kicking themselves in the ass.

The good new for the Lady Vols is that Graves and Russell looks great for the second game in a row and Jones gave a pretty good effort. Graves actually missed a shot. After going 8-8 in the first game of the season, she followed up with an 8-9 effort. She added 10 rebounds for another double double. Russell was 6-11 scoring 13 points and adding 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. After one block, she must have taunted the player some, as the ref, Dee Kanter, gave her a stern talking to. Those Lady Vols love to strut their stuff. Jones showed her athleticism with a few nice finishes around the basket, going 5-9 from the field and scoring 12 points and blocking 2 shots.

The bad news was the performance of the rest of the team. The other 8 players that saw minutes in this game shot 7-36 from the field a 1-12 from beyond the arc.

Their talented freshman guard Te'a Cooper was 4-17 from the field and 1-6 from behind the line along with 5 turnovers. She is finding out how tough it is in the college game.

Add to that the terrible play of Diamond Deshields. She makes the occasional nice play but they are few and far between. She struggled keeping her player in front of on defense. And while she was not a very good shooter at UNC, she is really struggling to find her shot in this offense. She was scoreless in the game, shooting 0-5 from the field and 0-2 on threes. For the season she is 7-28 and 0-7 on threes. She won't always shoot this poorly, but she needs to be a LOT better for Tennessee to make any noise this year. My big question is this.....is she just rusty or is she still injured. If she is rusty, she will improve. If she is still injured, why is she playing?

The supposedly deep Tennessee team had very little contributions from starters Reynolds and Carter. Add in zero points from Dunbar, Middleton, Moore and Jackson and you have 6 points on 3-14 shooting by 6 players. Oh yeah, the team shot 57% on free throws and only got to the line 7 times.

This is the No. 4 team in the country? I would put them outside the top ten, but until they lose, this is where they will be.
