I'm leaving this here until the voting ends on 3/23. Please vote!!!!

My wonderful and talented cousin Ted Fink has a songwriter competition for one of his songs.

He sent out the instrumental and we were supposed to send in lyrics. The song is called Riffin’.
Riffin’ is when you just make up music without lyrics for example on a guitar.
I made it to the final four!!! Now it’s time for the public to vote.

There are four entries and mine is No. 3 and it’s called Riffin’. I should win just for having the right name!!!

So here is the link. Vote early, often, and for No. 3.....me!!!

Sorry about yesterday and no blog. I kept getting error messages in Facebook so I didn't bother to create the blog. Until Selection Day I'll just keep posting David's wonderful numbers and as many links that I can find! And occasionally I'll think of something I want to talk about!

****************************************************

Ok, I thought of something to talk about.

Congrats to Napheesa Collier for being a first team ESPN all-American!!!! She is joined on that team by Teaira McGowan, Megan Gustafson, Sabrina Ionescu, and Asia Durr. All wonderful choices and fantastic players.

The second team consists of Arike Ogunbowale, Kristine Anigwe, Alanna Smith, Kalani Brown and Bridget Carlton. All great players as well.

Other receiving votes were Lauren Cox and Sophie Cunningham.

So, let me ask you a question. Is someone missing?

Ok, I'm a UConn fan. Where the hell is Katie Lou Samuelson???  She was FIRST team AA last season. Did she have a worse season? Was it her latest injury? Was it because Collier was so good this year it took away from her?

I'm just shaking my head here. There is no way she drops out of this list after being on the first team last year. Just read David's numbers. His "Numbers" are timely today!

PART I

Since 2000, there have been 19 winners of the NCAA Women's Basketball National Championship. This year is probably the most wide open opportunity for at least 6 programs to win. Here are those six programs and their record in the Final game of the tournament since 2000.

Notre Dame - (2 wins 4 losses)  2001, 2018
Baylor - (2 wins 0 losses) 2005, 2012
Mississippi State - (0 wins 2 losses)
Oregon - not been in Final game
Stanford - (0 wins 2 losses)

UConn - (10 wins 0 losses) 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Notes - Since 2000, UConn has lost 6 times in the semi-final game, Stanford lost 5 times, Notre Dame lost once, and Baylor lost once.

It is hard to reach the Final Four, and harder to win the National Championship. Stanford, which won NCs back in 1990 and 1992 is 0-7 since 2000. Notre Dame, the defensing champion is only 2-7 in the Final Four. This year is wide open, but many of the teams have little or no recent success to help them overcome the pressure and nervousness of the all or nothing nature of the Final Four.

PART II

Last year, Katie Lou played 951 minutes in 37 games. So far this season, she has played 952 minutes in 29 games. So, a comparison of her statistics would be based on almost identical minutes played. Let's compare where she has improved and where last year's numbers are better.

Improved stats
1. Rebounds - 193 vs 145 a year ago. In fact, KLS has 148 defensive rebounds alone.
2. Points - 547 vs 557 a year ago. Points are slightly lower, but average per game is up. 18.9 vs 17.4 pts per game.
3. Assist per game - 3.8 vs 3.32 a year ago.
4. Free throw % - This year, 88.1% vs 83.5% a year ago. Also, the # of attempts is up from 85 to 118.
5. Blocked shots - 17 vs 6 a year ago.
6. Steals - 38 vs 37, but again the average per game is higher.
7. Minutes per game - 32.7 this season vs 29.7 a year ago.

Worse stats
1. Shooting % - Overall this year = 45.8% vs 53% a year ago.
2. 3 pt shooting - 37.3% vs 47.5% a year ago.  (Biggest difference)
3. Turnovers - 45 vs 44 a year ago, but per game average is higher.
4. Shooting % inside the 3 pt arc - This year = 54.2% vs 59.6% a year ago.

Lou is rebounding more, assisting more, blocking shots more, playing more defense, and her shooting % is down due to increased effort in those other areas. That makes sense since she no longer can float around the 3 point arc and wait for uncontested threes. Her shots inside the arc are up from 166 a year ago to 201 this season, in 8 fewer games. More well rounded this season, but at a cost.

Go Huskies..!!
