Some Quotes in case you don't want to watch the videos
Evina Westbrook - “We just have to figure it out. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. No one else is feeling sorry for us. Lucky for us, no one expects us to win anymore. Even though we’re still UConn, it’s like, ‘OK, this is going to be easy game for us.’ Everyone wants a piece of us now. And we like that. I think we like that little edge, like, ‘OK, you guys want a piece of us, but we’ve still got some people.’ So I think we’re just excited to showcase that.”
Evina Westbrook - “I think we just found our sense of offensive rhythm. For it to happen in the second half was huge. We’ve always kind of had a drop in the fourth quarter, and that’s been a big emphasis at the end of practice, like we can’t just drop off our energy. So for us to get a rhythm, get a flow going into the second half was great, and I think it gave us the energy that we needed on defense as well.”
Olivia Nelson-Ododa - “It’s good that we have adversity right now. It’s good that we have that type of pressure on us. No matter what people in media might say or blogs, it helps. The favorable circumstance is to not have people injured and have everybody playing, but what we’re dealing with right now and the way we’re handling it, I’m proud of this team, and I think we’re going to do well coming up.”
The latest SECbracketology has 10 teams from the SEC. Really? The Big East has only two teams, UConn and DePaul. Ironically The AAC has three and would have had four if UConn was still there.
UConn is seeded third. So who would they play to get to another final four of the top seed in each matchup wins?
Round 1 Quinnipiac
Round 2 Nebraska
Sweet Sixteen Tennessee
Elite Eight NC State
Interesting bracket. I know this is not what it's going to be. No way Tennessee is a two seed by that time.
And as I posted the tweets about the UConn practice and word from Geno, there is finally good news on the injury front. Azzi Fudd and Nika Muhl are doing really well and Geno expects to start working them in after Christmas break. What does that mean?
Maybe some minutes against DePaul on 12/29 and Marquette on 12/31? For sure back in the rotation on 1/5 against Georgetown. What a big difference that will make in the guard rotation! Fingers crossed.
Congrat to Coach Jose Fernandez on winning his 400th game when South Florida defeated High Point.
Big game Sunday with No. 7 Tennessee takes on No. 3 Stanford in the friendly confines of Thompson Boiling Arena and on Pat Summit Court. I keep waiting for the last of offense by the Tennessee team to catch up with them. Is this the game it happens? It could be. Tennessee has no depth in the post and if the quickness of Stanford center Cameron Brink can get shot blocker supreme Key in foul trouble, it could be the beginning of the end of being undefeated for the Lady Vols. I'm predicting a low scoring affair. I believe the first team to 60 will win this one.
Part I - UConn's next game is Sunday, December 19th against Louisville at Mohegan Sun Casino.
The Huskies have played L'ville 19 times dating back to 1993. The Cardinals won that first game and only one other since. That was in January of 2019 at Louisville. So, Geno is 17-2 vs Louisville with the last game being held on March 31, 2019, a win for the Huskies.
The last six games between these two teams has featured the #1 team in the country four times (all UConn). But, L'ville has been #3, #4 or #5 five times. This is always a battle of top 5 teams.
Louisville lost their first game to #22 Arizona, but has won 8 straight since. The two best wins were #14 Kentucky and #12 Michigan. The rest have been cupcakes.
Part II - Louisville has made the Final Four three times. They lost in 2018 when Notre Dame and Miss. State knocked out UConn and the Cards. But they made the Championship game twice before that loss. Once in 2009, losing to UConn 76-54 and then a 2nd time in 2013 , again losing to UConn in a blow out 93-60. That L'ville team had taken out the Baylor squad with Brittney Griner in the semis. The current L'ville team is new and most players were not on the roster in 2018.
