No. 7 UCONN                          No. 6 Louisville
                             64                                                68

One more game I didn't see due to family commitments. We were at my son's house today, reveling in the glow of an amazing family weekend with around 20 family members.

So, to find out about the game, of course looked at the box score. And to get some details, I read some articles about the game. I loved the one from the Courant and I'll post the link to that in the Link Section. But I'll share some Geno quotes and then some pieces of what Don Amore had to say. He really captured how we all should be looking at this season. And a few of my own comments.

Amore - "This is new reality, new normal for the UConn women’s basketball team. What used to come easily will now be hard. What used to be hard may not come at all. So forget the win-loss record for now. Don’t dwell on the double-digit win that might’ve been Sunday at Mohegan Sun Arena if all were right with their world."

Geno - “We know what the reality is. We know what we’re dealing with. We show up and play as hard as we can for as long as we can and hope that it’s enough. ... This isn’t a one-week thing or a one-month thing. This is a season long thing.”

Amore - "Dwell instead on development, as 99 percent of teams must do every year. Dwell instead on Caroline Ducharme, the freshman who nearly carried UConn on her shoulders to a win over the No. 6 team in the country."

Jeff Walz - “Caroline played a great game today. I thought she was absolutely fantastic. She willed herself to some buckets and was stronger than we were at times.”

Caroline - “I was just trying to be aggressive and take the shots they were giving us, and just try to do what I could to help. I’ve kind of learned in my career not to get down on little things.”

Geno - “When you say, ‘What attracted you, what made you want to recruit Caroline?’ I don’t think it was her blazing quickness or ability to get off her feet and play above the rim. There was a mental toughness part that I find very rare in today’s players. And she has it, and she has a sneaky way of getting points on the board.”

Me - In looking at the stats, as disappointing Westbrook, Williams and Nelson-Ododa were, Ducharme is going to be a great one.

Geno - “Now the trick is, when we do get healthy, building on that, individuals being better and our team being better two months from now. So there’s a lot to hold on to.”

Me - Yes, a lot to hold on to. So hold tight. More bumps to come, but keep the eye on the prize and the time that the team is healthy again, a little at a time.

My wife and I are dog sitting at my son's house while they have the final event for my granddaughter, a 5 day cruise. They leave Monday and we are on dog duty!!!!

An astounding stat

Yes, we have three losses. We know why.
Without looking it up, think about the last time that UConn had three losses before Christmas.

It has been some time.

The last time UConn had their first loss before New Year's was in 2004–05. UConn lost to #10 Michigan State in Hartford.

The last time UConn had their first loss before Christmas was on December 13, 1986 against LaSalle at the LaSalle Invitational in Philadelphia. That was Geno's second year. It didn't happen in the first year so it is only happened once in UConn history under Auriemma
