Marquette

Marquette is having a solid season. They have had some really good wins. They beat then ranked No. 3 Texas 68-61, now ranked No. 19 Gonzaga 70-66 in back to back games and followed that with an overtime loss to then ranked No. 20 UCLA 66-58 in overtime.

Some bad losses as well. In their last two games they lost big to Colorado 71-48 and in their last game they lost to Villanova 54-52. Their only other loss was against Seton Hall 82-78. That game is one of the comparative games with UConn, who beat the Pirates 98-73.

Since the first matchup that UConn won 61-48, Marquette has gone 6-3, only losing to the three other top teams in the conference, 68-42 to Creighton, 66-61 to St. John's and 73-54 to Villanova. They basely beat Butler 65-63 and their best win was against DePaul 72-63

Game Analysis

My pregame report for the first game holds true so much of this report is just a repeat. I've added how players did in the first game as context for this match up.

Marquette lost their two leading scorers form last season in Lauren Van Kleunen and Karisa McLaughlin. Van Kleumen was a handful. At 6'2" and solid, she was tough to deal with in the post. McLauglin was by far their best three point shooter. Both players are really missed.

Here are the returning players.

5"11" Senior Jordan King is the leading scorer and has the most assist as well. She averages 15.3 PPG and 4 APG. She is the only three point threat on the team shooting 42.9% from deep. Not only the best player, she is the team leader as well. In the first game King played 28 minutes scoring only four points on 2-8 shooting. As usual, Geno stopped the leading scorer for the opponent.

Lisa Karlen, a 6'2" junior forward brings some rebounding to the team and leads Marquette in blocks at 23. She is averaging 11.3 PPG and 7.8 RPG.  Karlen had a solid game in the first outing scoring 15 points on 7-16 shooting and added 6 rebounds in her 33 minutes. She also had 5 turnovers.

6'1" senior forward Chloe Marotta is a solid shooter as she doesn't take many out of her range, which is right around the basket. She is a pretty good defender as well. And she is the leading rebounder on the team at 8.6 RPG. She is second on the team in scoring at 13.5 PPG.
Marotta also had double digit scoring in the first game with 10 points on 4-11 shooting. She added 4 rebounds in her 34 minutes.

5'7" junior guard Rose Nkumu played 34 minutes and really struggled against the UConn defense. She was 1-8 from the field and 0-2 on threes. She led the team with 3 assists.

5'11" freshman guard Emily La Chapell (gorgeous) moved into the starting lineup for Marquette and had a nice game againt the Huskies. She played 37 minutes and scored 11 points and was 3-4 on threes.

Marquette is not a very good offensive teams and they really rely on the top three scorers. Stop them and the Golden Eagle struggle to score.

Defensively, the Golden Eagles play exclusively a man-to-man. I said this in the first game analysis "And they will have problems like Creighton did in guarding Edwards and Juhasz. They just don't have the size to handle them." Wrong...lol. BOth Edwards and Juhasz had only nine points each. Lou and Ducharme had great games against Marquette with 22 points and 19 points respectively. They will miss Caroline in this game but the didn't have Aubrey Griffin in that game either.

UConn will try to uptempo this game. They will run on almost every defensive rebound. But Marquette is always very physical and hopefully no one gets hurt.

Prediction

I said this in the first analysis - "Based on the season to date, Marquette is really going to struggle to score over 50 points in this game. They have little three point shooting so UConn's defense can concentrate on protecting the basket."

That proved to be true. They were 5-18 on threes and scored 48 points. I expect that to happen again. But I don't think they will hold down Edwards and Juhasz again. UConn will score more by running after rebounds and the Huskies will win by more than the 13 point margin of the first match up.

UConn by 22+.
