DoggyDaddy's Dailies 12/31/15 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

******************************************************************************
******************************************************************************

UConn had their way with Cincinnati Wednesday night, winning 107-45. I believe I called a 60+ point win. Hey, after my bad prediction for the Maryland game, I was due for a good one.

The big news is that Natalie Butler finally saw some game action. She showed us what UConn fans have been hoping for, a presence in the middle. She played 15 minutes, scored 11 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and had 2 blocks and 2 steals. She looked pretty darn good. I'm sure she will improve her conditioning as she did look a little tired at times. She has great hands. Strong in getting post position. I love how she keeps the ball high when she rebounds. The good news is she will only get better.

******************************************************************************

Interesting game between No. 20 South Florida and No. 8 Mississippi State. The Bulldogs defeated the Bulls 68-58.

I was impressed with a couple of players on the Mississippi State team. Victoria Vivians is a terrific player. Big and strong, she has a nice pull up jumper and uses that to up fake and drive to the basket. She has a great WNBA body. She can also hit the three. She scored 23 points in this game. Morgan Williams is their point guard and she is a solid player. She is strong and smart. She added 15 points with 7-8 FTs to hold off a nice South Florida rally.

South Florida looked off in this game. They made a ton of unforced errors including several offensive fouls. It was not pretty. Courtney Williams had a terrible game missing her first 10 shots before ending up 4-20 scoring only 12 points, half her season average.

Disappointing loss for USF, and a nice win for Mississippi State.

******************************************************************************

Big upset tonight as No. 4 Baylor lost on the road to unranked Oklahoma State 52-45.

The Lady Bears were only able to score two points in the second quarter. TWO points. That is unbelievable to me. I mean, this is the number 4 team in the country, undefeated to this point. To score only 45 points puts a different perspective on Baylor.

Nina Davis did her best to keep Baylor in the game but even she was struggling, going 6-18 from the field in scoring her 18 points. Only Beatrice Momprimier  with 10 was in double figures. Duke transfer, Alexis Jones had a nightmare of a game. She was 2-18 from the field, 1-10 on threes with five turnovers.

They were missing their point guard Nia Johnson, who was out with a bone bruise in her. I'm sure her absence made a huge difference in the Baylor offense. She is just so dominant in distributing the ball to her teammates.

Ugly loss for Baylor and a great win for Oklahoma State, who moves to 11-1.

From David in Naples

Double doubles occur when a player reaches double figures in two statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals or blocks) in one game. The most common is points and rebounds, but point guards often get point/assists doubles.

1. Gabby Williams is 2nd on the team with 3 double-doubles this season and 8 in her young career.
2. Morgan Tuck has 1 double double this year, but only 2 in her career.
3. Despite playing in 128 games, MoJeff only has 1 double double in her UConn career.
4. Saniya Chong also has 1 double double in her time at UConn.
5. Stewie leads in double doubles this season with 4. She has 29 so far in her 124 games.
6. No one on the team has the elusive triple triple, where 3 stats reach double figures.

Look for more double doubles now that UConn is in AAC conference play. 8-)

*******************************************************************************

Boy, do people like controversy. Katie Lou Samuelson was held out of the first 28 minutes of the game before playing the last 12 minutes of the game. It was clear after the game that Geno was sending a message. When asked why she didn't play earlier, he said that "players have to play hard and she needs to do more than shoot.". It's clear she had a bad practice or two.

Holding her out is just a message being sent as he did last season with Tuck and Stewart. It's worse for upper classmen. This message was pretty mild.

So, what's my beef? Well, some fans felt the need to say that she was in the dog house.

"KLS was making a visit to Chateau Bow-wow tonight. She didn't enter the game until about a minute was left in the third quarter, with UConn up by about 35 or 40 points. The announcers showed her on the bench in the first half, looking puzzled but not overly upset."

That is a little too extreme. Believe me, I know what a doghouse is!!! And I love the analysis of her face. Like someone can tell what she is thinking from their living room couch watching a quick glimpse of her face on the bench.

Sigh..........

DoggyDaddy's Dailies 12/30/15 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!!

******************************************************************************

In case you haven't seen it here is my UConn/Cincinnati Pregame Report

Looks like Butler will make her long awaited debut Wednesday night.

The Huskies could have used Butler's 6-foot-5 frame against Maryland post player Brionna Jones, who had 24 points on 12-for-14 shooting Monday night. But Auriemma decided to wait.

"It's getting better every single day," Auriemma said. "There was a point in time where we talked about that and (Monday) could have been it. But not having played, I didn't want the first day to be in this environment against a really good team. I don't think it would have been fair to Natalie. But all things staying the same, I think Wednesday will probably be her first real opportunity to get some playing time."
******************************************************************************

Well, another year has passed and I get to celebrate another year on this planet.

I'm so fortunate to have a wonderful wife of 40 years.

My son, who has blessed me with two beautiful granddaughters.

And my daughter, who has given me my new grandson.

Yes, that's my son-in-law photo bombing the picture.

I'm thankful I'm here to write this crazy blog about UConn women's basketball and WCBB in general. I love putting this together every day. Sometimes I wish UConn would never have games every two days. It kills me. I'm still working on my Maryland post game report! At least I get a break after the Cincinnati game with a week off again.

I'll be at the Cape the next few days for New Years so I'll do my best to get out my Dailies.

Thanks for reading!!!!

In a fun Big East matchup, No. 25 DePaul outscored Marquette 91-86.

Marquette was trailing by 10 79-69 before going on a 12-3 run to come within 82-81. Erika Davenport's layup gave the Golden Eagles a one-point lead with 1 minute, 41 seconds to go. Ashton Millender came down and buried a clutch three-pointer to put DePaul back on top 85-83.
McKayla Yentz hit one of three free throws with 20.5 seconds left in the game to make it 85-84. Jenkins converted a pair of foul shots at the other end for an 87-84 Blue Demon lead with 16.3 seconds left.
After an Amani Wilborn basket, Chanise Jenkins hit two more free throws with 6.5 seconds to go. January's foul shots with two seconds on the clock finished it up.

Jenkins led DePaul with 25 points and 8 assists. Jessica January added 21 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds and Megan Podkowa had a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and also 4 blocks.

I'm sure this was a great game to watch.

From David in Naples

In the preseason AP basketball poll, UConn was clearly #1. Right behind the Huskies were Notre Dame at #3, Ohio State at #6, Florida State at #7 and Maryland at #9.
UConn has now played and beat all four of those teams, as well as a DePaul team ranked #18 at the time of their game. Consider the following:

1. Total margin of victory was 104 points for an average of 20.8 per game.
2. The smallest margin of victory was 10, the largest was 44.
3. Notre Dame was undefeated entering the game, as was Maryland.
4. DePaul had one loss prior to the UConn game, as did FSU and Ohio State.
5. In those five games against ranked teams, UConn averaged 86.6 points per game.

Geno believes to be the best, you have to play and beat the other good teams..!! :D
*******************************************************************************

My "What the ????" goes out to all those UConn fans that just can't seem to enjoy themselves when it comes to UConn women's basketball. If you ever visit the crazy message boards, there is usually a "game thread" for each game where fans get to post their game thoughts on the fly. It's amazing how bad UConn is according to these fans. Every bad play can bring a slew of responses telling Geno how to coach, demeaning a player or how UConn is doomed in the future.

Here are a few beauties -

"Freshman are going to be the death of me."
"UConn playing terribly. Pretty simple at this point."
"getting beat back down.. unheard of"
"Getting out-hustled all over the court!"
"Poor transition defense, poor perimeter defense, sloppy execution on offense along with tentative play...WAKE UP! "
"Saniya is coming in - oh no!"
"I think they need to play smart, team basketball. If they did they'd probably win by 20+. Not sure what they played the first half. "
"Not seeing any improvements anywhere. They're significantly better than Maryland but you'd never know it tonight."
"No ball or player movement, poor decision-making, missed uncontested layups."
"very little player or ball movement against the zone. Just standing around"
"Outside shooting, outside shooting. Please recruit more outside shooters."
"It's to the point where I feel like every KLS shot is going to miss."
"I feel Geno's staying with her, waiting for her HS confidence to return. But I'm seeing a Nicole Wolff type of career with Lou. Hope I'm wrong. "
"They don't have a lot, really. There's a reason most of these teams are playing constant zone. "
"Honestly the only two persons on this team I trust to shoot the three are Mojeff and Stewy. The rest I would not hold my breath. "

Wow...after reading these, did you think UConn won?? I get really annoyed with the constant Katie Lou critic. The comparison to Nicole Wolff, who sadly was injured for much of her UConn career, is totally unfair.

What is sad is that you will find these kinds of comments in the game threads of 50 point UConn victories. I guess some folks can't just enjoy the team. Too bad for them.

Here is the post game interview with Geno. I don't think he would agree with any of these "assessments".

Last Years AAC Quarterfinal Game Highlights

Team Overviews

UConn comes off a tough well earned win against No. 6 Maryland 83-73. UConn really stuggled early with turnovers and defending the paint the entire game. Their shooting was off and overall, they just didn't look good. Oh, and they still won by 10 against a terrific Maryland team.

Cincinnati won their first 4 games of the season. But since then, they have lost 7 of 8 games for a 5-7 record. Last season, they had 5 wins and 13 losses coming into the first UConn game. The seem to be improved but not enough to challenge the good teams in WCBB. They lost by 40 to Michigan State and 29 against Ohio State. But they did stay with the rest of the teams they have met including a decent Georgia team before losing by 18. They have improved since last season but how much is the question.

What a great 11 minutes by Saniya. A big steal and layup in the first half and a game sealing three pointer with 42 seconds left in the game. She can be a big part of the gameplan if she can hit threes at a 42% clip.

Head Coach Jamelle Elliott

Ok...I'll say it. I love Jamelle's new haircut. She looks GREAT. So, how much can I say about her that most UConn fans don't know? Probably nothing. But here are some facts about her and Cincinnati.

Here are some quotes from back when she was hired. Some really nice words. And some facts from the Cincinnati site.

Jamelle is a former student-athlete and assistant coach at Connecticut, was named the University of Cincinnati's eighth head women's basketball coach on May 5, 2009. She enters her seventh campaign in 2015-16.

Elliott spent the better part of two decades with the Connecticut women's basketball program and Hall of Fame head coach Geno Auriemma, the last 12 years as an assistant coach. She has been a part of six national championships, including the Huskies' 2009 undefeated championship run, and won a title as a player, helping UConn to the 1995 championship, the first in the school's history.

After graduating from Connecticut with a degree in business management in 1996, Elliott went on to earn her graduate degree in sports management at UConn in 1997. Elliott, a native of Washington, D.C., was named to the Washington Post all-Metro Team as well as being named Scholar-Athlete at H.D. Woodson High School.

 Game Analysis

Right now, Cincinnati is starting four guards and one forward. They have three freshman  off the bench so I don't know how much Jamelle will play them. Their one forward off the bench is a freshman and only 6'1". I would imagine that Coach Elliott will play a zone for most of the game and force UConn to the outside as much as possible. Especially since UConn is shooting almost 5 percent lower from distance than last season. UConn will want fast break at every chance before the Cincinnati defense can set up.

But the talent discrepancy is just too much for the Bearcats to handle. It just won't matter what they do. UConn will just run it's offense, practice plays, take the best shot and then defend the hell out of the ball on the other end.

Cincinnati shoots only 34.8% from the field and 30.2% on 3's. What makes it worse it that they are a terrible ball handling team. They have only 124 assists this season and 168 turnovers.  They will not do well against UConn's pressure defense.

Final Prediction

Last year I predicted a 45+ margin of victory. I figured Geno would ease up on Jamelle. Stop pressing, hold up on the fast breaks and just take it easy on Cincinnati.

Of course, sometimes it just won't matter and the players are just that much better. And last year proved that. In spite of holding back after a big lead the scores last year in their three games the scores were almost identical. 96-31, 96-36, and 93-35.

Who am I to argue. UConn by 60+.
