Thank you everyone that has wished me a safe and fun cruise. A friend of mine, Marty, made it a point to make sure that I knew that this particular vessel has a brand spankin' new internet system and another friend told me to go to the highest point in the ship and blog. All I can say is I'll do my best. It won't be easy with all the activities, but I'll try to write something before hitting the pillow!

The SEC had two first round games today. LSU and Alabama, two teams that both defeated Tennessee this season met in the first game. Yeah, I just had to mention that.
LSU beat Alabama 58-49 to win their 10th game of the season, avoiding their first single digit winning season since 1994-95 when under Sue Gunther, they went 7-27 and 1-10 in the SEC.
It wasn't a pretty game, but at least one team scored over 50 points. LSU was led by Alexis Hyder who scored 20 points and added 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Alabama's season is probably over at 15-15 unless the WNIT invites them to their tournament.
Ole Miss was defeated by Vanderbilt 74-59 in the second game of the day in the SEC tournament. Christa Reed scored 21 points to lead Vanderbilt and ending Ole Miss's season at 10-20 and 2-14 in the SEC.

The ACC tournament started today as well with three games.
North Carolina's weak season ended with an OT loss to Pittsburgh 82-72. At 14-18 to end the season, it was the first season under .500 for the Tar Heels since 1995-96. For the Panthers, Brenna Wise had a career-high 25 points and added 10 rebounds, Aysia Bugg added 20 points which was also a career high.
Wake Forest put Clemson out of their misery with a 73-58 win over the Tigers. Clemson ended the season at 4-26 and ZERO-16 in the ACC. Milan Quinn had 20 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Demon Deacons.
Boston College upset Virginia Tech in a really poorly played game, 49-37. Boston College wasn't horrible, as they shot 35% from the field and 30% on threes, but they had 23 turnovers. Virginia Tech didn't turn the ball over that much with only 11, but they shot a horrid 22% from the field and an even worse 15% on threes.
*****************************************************************************
The Big Ten also started their tournament.
Northwestern, who started the season 10-0 and in the top 12, beat 7-22 Wisconsin in overtime 76-72. Northwestern is now 16-15 which means they were 6-15 their last 21 games. It just shows how stupid the rankings can be.
Penn State beat Illinois 75-66, to end the Fighting Illini's season at 9-21 and 2-16 in the conference. Penn State, with UConn transfer Briana Banks, continues in a disappointing 12-18 season. Banks had 12 points for the Nittany Lions.
*****************************************************************************
The only chance any of these winning teams have to make the NCAA tournament it to win their conference tournament. The chances of that happening are slim. Virginia Tech might have an outside shot if they got to the championship game of the ACC tournament.

From David in Naples
UConn has turned the ball over 343 times this season for an average of 11.8 per game. However, they have created 620 turnovers, which is more than 21.3 per game. On the Huskies, Moriah leads with 57 turnovers. This makes sense since she handles the ball far more than anyone else. MoJeff has more than made up for those turnovers by dealing out 151 assists and pilfering 76 steals. Her assist and steals totals are tops on the team.
Kia Nurse and Stewie are 2nd and 3rd on the team with 46 and 44 turnovers respectively. Again, they make up for those bad plays with 81 and 115 assists. Kia also has 43 steals and Stewie 49. There are only two players with more turnovers than assists. Napheesa Collier has 35 turnovers versus 27 assists. However, Collier is one of two players with more steals (42) and blocked shots (41), than turnovers (27). The other is Stewie.
Natalie Butler is the other player where turnovers (25) exceed assists (18). Her injury and limited playing time, combined with taking last year off, may explain her rustiness. However, her blocked shot total (16) and steals (12) more than make up for the two dozen turnovers.
As a team, UConn leads their opponents is assists, 628 vs 290 and in steals, 355 vs 175. In addition, the Huskies have blocked 194 shots versus only 69 for the other guys. Go Huskies..!!

Last year, I stopped this section when the regular season ended and I'm doing it again.
I just want to publicly thank Johnny C for supplying me with so many of these numbers. He fractured his clavicle in the middle of the season and still managed to send me the data I shared with all of you. THANKS JOHNNY!!!!!
