Overview
Duquesne earned their spot against UConn with a great 97-76 win over Seton Hall. They played a very UConn like game, shooting 48% from the field and 43% on threes along with 20-23 from the free throw line. A 28-5 record is nothing to sneeze about, but when you look deeper, you see that they have played a pretty weak schedule. The A-10 is not a great conference and Duquesne's out of conference schedule was even weaker. They have played 5 NCAA tournament teams in George Washington (twice), Princeton, St. Bonnies, and St. John's, beating only the Johnnies to go 1-4 against the best teams on their schedule.
UConn played their best quarter of the season if not several seasons in taking a 41-4 lead after 10 minutes against Robert Morris in the first round of the NCAA tournament. They even blew Geno's mind with their performance. I'm sure they are hoping they can keep it up.

Duquesne Head Coach Dan Burt
Dan Burt was named head coach of the Duquesne women's basketball program on April 27, 2013. Burt is coming off his second season as head coach. They finished third in the A-10 and had one of the most successful years in program history recording the most league wins (12) in team history. Overall, the Dukes' 23 victories was the third-most for the program all-time. He is said to pattern his program after Geno and UConn and when you watch them play, you can see how he is doing that.

Duquesne TEAM STATS
Game Analysis
While I didn't stay to watch Duquesne beat Seton Hall Saturday, I did watch on ESPN3 Sunday morning to get a feel for how they play. And they play very well. Of course, it was against Seton Hall, who I thought was fortunate to be in the tournament but still.....
The Dukes (too close to Duke for my taste) play a very similar style to UConn. They run a motion offense, setting multiple screens off the ball to free up shooters. And they have shooters at every position.
Robinson, their point guard handed out 7 assists against the Hall, but she also had 6 turnovers. She was not comfortable with Seton Hall's pressure defense. She is very good at running their offense. She is going to have a tough time with Jefferson in her grill.
Their best player, at least in the SH game was Workman. She is a TOUGH 6' guard that can take the ball to the basket and hit from the outside. And boy does she rebound. I can't wait to see her and Nurse matched up. Both Workman and Robinson will see 35+ minutes. UConn will try to wear them down.
I really like the two "Bigs" that the Dukes play. 6'3" Szamosi plays like a traditional forward, but she can hit the occasional three. She is not a banger, but will battle in the post as best she can. She will struggle to defend Tuck if they are matched up. The 6'3" freshman Lass, is more like a Katie Lou type forward. She started her offense from the outside in. She has a good handle and loves the open three. I really like her game. She moves well for a big girl and has a great future ahead of her.
Duquesne loves to, often throwing long passes to start their fast break. I saw them run off of made baskets, something right out of the UConn playbook. The Huskies will have to be ready at all times to prevent that from happening.
On defense, again, the Dukes like to play similar to UConn with a tough switching man to man. They put on full court zone pressure as well looking to take time off the clock for the other team to run their offense and possibly force a few turnovers. They have the players to do that very effectively against most teams. But UConn is not most teams.
Duquesne really only goes 6 deep, with the four players I mentioned already along with freshman guard Omogrosso, who had 24 minutes in the Seton Hall game. UConn will push and push, tiring out the limited roster of the Dukes.
UConn is coming off a devastating performance against Robert Morris, propelled by a dominating defense. And they will look to do that against a more talented Duquesne team, who has a well drilled offense game plan. UConn will press early, forcing Robinson into mistakes and trying to get the Dukes out of their rhythm.
On offense, UConn will run first and then pound them inside where the Huskies have a big advantage. While the Dukes had two 6'3" players, they don't have a lot of bulk. UConn will post Tuck and Stewart and look for kick outs for threes. If UConn is hitting those shots, it could get ugly early.
UConn will bring in Williams and Collier off the bench and they will make a huge difference in this game. I like the little guard off the bench for Duquesne, Omogrosso but she is just too small and not quick enough to make much of an impact.

Final Prediction
Duquesne is an excellent Mid-Major team. They play a terrific offense scheme, and tough D. But they have never seen anything like this UConn team. It's hard to believe that the best team in the country has another gear. Scary for the rest of the field.
UConn will pressure them until they are grabbing the shorts, bent over at the waist. The Huskies are just bigger, stronger, and quicker. Now, the Dukes will get their share of open shots, and will probably make more than I would like. Everyone they put on the court can shoot. But there is no way that is enough.
I figure UConn will get to their season averages in this one. Somewhere in the 88-48 range.
UConn by 40+.
