Well, it was an interesting day at sea. Even the trip from Connecticut to the Bayonne Port was not without a little heart palpitation. On the drive down 84 towards NY, all of a sudden the power went off in the bus. I mean all the power, and this weird indicator light went on. The driver pulled over and all I could think of was that we would be stuck on the highway and miss the cruise. We sa for a minute and our prayers were answered as the indicator light went away and all the power came back on. I have no idea what happened but we were on our way.
On arrival, I found out they changed our cabin room number. Of course, this was after they tagged our luggage with the first room number. We then had to wait in a long line in passenger services to make sure out luggage went to the right room. All they ended up doing was call house keeping to make sure the luggage was in the right place. When we walked to the cabin on the 13th deck (lucky, huh) we saw our luggage sitting in the hallway outside our old room. We just picked it up and tried to get into the room. But the passkey had the wrong name. I'm now William Clark. Just call me Bill.
We had to go through the same line in passenger services and get the new keys! And the bottle of wine that was supposed to be in our room was nowhere to be found. Not a good start.
We did have a fun rest of the day. I won $100 at blackjack. I sang "Can't help falling in love" at karaoke, ate a nice dinner, saw a very funny comedian and now, it's midnight and I'm putting this together. It will be brief with just some links and maybe a few comments.

From David in Naples
With the regular season now over and all the various tournaments starting, UConn leads the country in the most important statistical categories. In several cases, the teams just behind or ahead of the Huskies are a bit of a surprise. For example, the Huskies lead the nation scoring offense at 88 points per game. Ohio State is tied for that lead, followed by Sacramento State (85.8), Maryland (85.2) and Minnesota (83.7). Interestingly, when UConn played Ohio State and Maryland this season, they held those two high scoring teams to a combined 44 points below their average.
No surprise, UConn is #1 in scoring defense at 48.1 pts per game. FGCU, Army and Maine are next at 49.3-49.9 pts allowed. No other major program is in the top 5. The Huskies led the nation in field goal percentage at 52% even. The usual suspects are right behind with Maryland (50.3), Notre Dame (49.5) and Ohio State (48.5) ranked 2-5. Baylor and Stanford show up as the #3 and #2 teams in field goal defense at 32.1% & 32.8%. The Huskies are tied for that 3rd spot with Baylor at 32.8%.
UConn leads the country in free throw % at 80.1%, followed by Columbia at 79.8% and USF at 78.6%. The Huskies retain their #1 spot in the all important assist/turnover ratio statistic. UConn is at 1.83, tied with Villanova and ahead of DePaul at 1.59. In their game against UConn, DePaul had 16 turnovers and 17 assists. Not surprisingly, UConn is in the top 3 for turnover margin at 9.55, with Syracuse #1 at 11.07 & Sacramento State is in between at 10 even.
In summary, heading into the post season, UConn leads the nation is scoring, scoring defense, point differential, free throws, assist/turnover ratio and turnover margin. And the Huskies have Stewie and MoJeff.

As I predicted, Tennessee continued on their roll and beat an overrated Texas A&M team. It really looks like they have found their confidence and sometimes that is all it takes. They didn't shoot great, 42% from the field and 20% on threes but they had only 12 turnovers. It seems to be their formula for victory.
They take on No. 16 Mississippi State, another overrated SEC team, who beat Vanderbilt Friday. I predict another upset for the Lady Vols. It just feels like they figured something out. Maybe.
*******************************************************************************
Unranked California sent No. 10 Arizona State out of the PAC 12 conference tournament in a huge upset. California is only 14-15 after this win. ASU still should make the tournament, but they have had some WTF losses this season. I don't expect them to last long in the NCAA's.

6-24 Kansas actually won a game in the Big 12 tournament. Shocking as they beat TCU 81-64 to end a 20 game losing streak. Amazing. I guess you just never know!

ReplyDeleteThanks for this, DD.
ReplyDeleteOn Tn: their surge seems to be the result of players deciding to play. There is still the school-yard offense, but players aren't giving up on a play, as they did all season. HW stated that they "simplified" the offense going into the tournament.
For anyone who has subjected themselves to watching this group, that comment defies understanding.
