GO UCONN!!!!!

Now they can smile!!! It wasn't pretty, but the Huskies were able to pull away from Kanasa in the third quarter and then hold on and maintain their lead, winning 71-63.

Paige Bueckers led the way with 22 points, going 8-15 from the field, 2-2 on free throws and added 4 rebounds. She hit some HUGE shots. I believe she only had 2 points in the first half so she had 20 points in the second half.

Aubrey Griffin was great in the second half as well, hitting all 8 free throws in scoring 20 points and hauling in 8 rebounds. She had a great game.

I was able to watch the second half on Youtube Live. Someone sent me the link. I was pleasently surprised to be able to do that.

What I saw was KK and Ice get a ton of minutes in the second half. Ice, in particular was in and Edwards was on the bench. I think for the last entire quarter. Not sure what that was all about. Maybe Geno is sending a message to Aaliyah. Maybe I missed an injury? I hope not!.

Overall, a good team effort on defense for sure. A good three point shooting team was held to 4-17. I didn't like how Kansas was able to drive the right side of the lane and either make a layup or get fouled. I didn't like some of those foul calls either.

It was great to see the offense put some points on the board in the second half. 46 points is much more like it.

The team now gets a week off to rest and practice. Mostly practice to prepare for a really tough first two weeks of December. They play No. 12 Texas, No. 18 North Carolina and No. 20 Louisville with Ball State squeezed in there between Texas and North Carolina. I'm always hopeful that the day-to-day girls Ducharme and Patterson will be in the lineup. If not, this current rotation is looking much better.

Straight from the Dog

Only two upsets in the Top 25 Saturday, but there were a few where the higher ranked team was on the cusp of losing.

In a game that has implications for UConn's SOS, No. 10 North Carolina State beat No. 3 Colorado 78-60. Yes, they beat the heck out of them. I don't know how much North Carolina State will move up in the polls but I think Top 5 is fair. Great win for the Wolfpack.

Green Bay beat their 2nd Top 25 team in a row. After beating No. 22 Creighton earler in the week, they took care of No. 23 Washington State 59-48. Yes, lower ranked Top 25 teams, but still. I think they should move into the top 25. Barely.

Like I said, some close calls as well as upsets.

No. 7 LSU, once again without their "Superstar" Angel Reese, was able to get by unranked Virginia winning 76-73. It was a fun game to watch with the teams exchanging the lead over and over. With the injury to Smith and the missing Reese, the Tigers went only 6 deep with a nominal 8 minutes by one other player. Freshman center Del Rosario had her first start of the season and aquited herself well. In her 20 minutes she had 7 point and 4 rebounds. Foul trouble limited her minutes. Every other player that saw minutes is listed as a guard for LSU. Morrow is really a small forward and in this game she had a DePaul type game. Without Reese, Morrow dominated the ball with 25 shots. She ended up with 37 points and 16 rebounds. Will she be happy to move back to second fiddle when Reese is eventually back and playing? The great freshman Mikalah Williams had a tough outing. 2-10 from the field with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Point guard Haley Van Lith had 12 points on 4-12 shooting and 5 assists. But she also had 5 turnovers.

No. 20 Louisville used a big fourth quarter to come back and beat Liberty 72-63. Louisvill was down 52-46 going into the 4th quarter. They outscored Libery 26-11 to win going away. Liberty??? Really? The Cardinals are a future UConn Opponent.

No. 9 Virginia Tech needed a big third quarter to beat Tulane. Tulane was up 33-31 at the half but was outscored by 7 in the third quarter.

No. 18 North Carolina, another future UConn opponent, lost to No. 16 Kansas State 63-57. No, not an upset or a surprise. Just a future team we should be watching.

Active win streaks

California Baptist continues to hold the mantle of the longest active winning streak. They are 5 – 0 this year and won their last three games of last season so their current win streak is 8 games.

It hasn’t been drama-free. According to their ranking (78), they are substantially stronger than University of Texas at El Paso(181), but the Miners took the Lancers to overtime Saturday 18 November.

They followed that up with a game against 122 ranked Portland. While they won that game by five points, they were down by four points with just under six minutes to go in the game. ESPN gave Portland an 82% chance of winning the game, but Cal Baptist responded and ended up with the win.

They are favored in their next game against Southern Utah. Even though that team is ranked 248, Massey’s projection is a three-point win so that’s barely better than pick ‘em. They are favored by slim margins against virtually all opponents except for Stephen F Austin but by slim enough margins that they are likely to stumble before the SFA challenge.

Nipping on their heels is Washington State. They are currently 7 – 0, which is the best active win streak using only the seasons games. Washington state is favored in their remaining nonconference games but will have a tall task when they take on Stanford on 5 January, if they make it that far without a loss.

Milestone watch

• Aaliyah Edwards had 1270 career points after the Minnesota game. She scored 5 in the UCLA game bringing her total to 1275. She is now 41st and needs to reach 1298
to tie Morgan Tuck.

• Nika Mühl had 447 assists after the Maryland game. She recorded 3 in the UCLA game bringing her total to 450. She needs to reach 455 to tie Katie Lou Samuelson for 19th place.
