"the first half was the worst any of his team's had played in his 30 years of coaching" - Geno Auriemma

Geno, Geno, Geno.....we are on to your game of motivating the team in the press. They will of course hear about it, read about it, live with the comment for a while. And who am I to argue with your tactics. They work. But the fact is, while sloppy with the ball, they shot the ball well, rebounded well and defended extremely well.

But it certainly was not a half to use in a training video unless you say "see this? Don't do it". The interior passes were too quick and some were trying to put a thread through a needle. As Geno said, they were making passes they had no business making.

I think you have to give a lot of credit to the ECU defense. They will give a hard time to many conference foes this year. Their frenetic pace threw UConn off their game. And really, all UConn had to do was slow it down a little bit. That's easier said than done as it's happening. And they struggled with it for the entire half.

Stewart was dominating in the half with 18 points. UConn shot 55% from the field and hit 11-13 from the free throw line. I don't see how you can do both of those in the worst half in 30 years.

I guess Geno got through to them at half time. They came out firing, going on a 16-0 run to start the half. They cut their turnovers from 15 to 5. Other than the turnovers EVERY stat was better in the first half.

Jefferson was terrific again, other than her unusually high number of turnovers. She had all of her 4 TO's in the first half. She had 5 steals to go with her 16 points. Going 8-9 from the field has her shooting percentage over .500.

After today's game UConn is now shooting 52.8% from the field for the season, on pace for 2nd on the all time team record list behind the 1999-2000 team that shot an amazing 53.9%. They also have seven players shooting over 50% from the field with only Chong not over that number in the regular rotation.

I would be remise not to note that Courtney Ekmark scored her first collegiate point of her career with a back door cut and nifty layup. It looks like Geno will play her into shape with minutes similar to how he handle KML last year.

Looking forward to watching them again Sunday against St. Johns in the worlds most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. The Johnny's are a solid team again, undefeated before losing to Indiana State in double overtime last week. They play Seton Hall in a huge Big East matchup. I don't think they will be looking ahead to UConn while playing the 23rd ranked Pirates.

So, Happy New Years to all my family and friends for all your support as I try to create a blog that will help you enjoy WCBB and specifically UConn just a little bit more!!!

So, without further ado!!!

View from the Den- UConn vs Duke Post game report

Actual game view

Well, it's over. Finally. Duke vs UConn. UConn vs Duke. Unless they meet in the NCAA's, UConn will not be playing the Blue Devils again in the foreseeable future. Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie is going home and taking her ball with her.

But who can blame her? Since starting a yearly game against UConn, Duke has been embarrassed on the court pretty much every time. If Duke was using UConn as a measuring stick every year, they might as well be using light years. The gap is huge, but we won't be finding out anytime soon if that will stay that way.

This game was no different than most of the others between these two programs. Duke plays UConn tough for several minutes, maybe even a half. UConn destroys Duke in the second half. Rinse, Lather and Repeat. This game was eerily similar to two years ago in Gample where UConn had a two point lead at the half and went on to win by 30. This time UConn was up seven and won by 31.

UConn and mostly Tuck and Stewart had real trouble with the ball and decision making in the first half. UConn had 11 turnovers, but it seemed like 100. And most of them were just sloppy errors that just shouldn't happen. And most of those occurred during the Duke 16-3 run. It was as ugly a 3 minutes of play as you will see from this team. Bad decisions, weak passes, metal errors. Yuck!!!!!

It was clear that UConn was missing Nurse, who was out with foul trouble. UConn was up 11 when she went out, and until 7 minutes left and the score was 22-22. At this point Geno subbed in Chong and it's no coincidence that UConn ended the half on an 11-4 run. She was all over the court, making her presence felt on defense. She had a tough offensive rebounds and at least one nice pass to an open KML for a 3. Chong is still struggling from three  point land, but she didn't let that effect the rest of her game. She really was a spark plug the last 5 minutes of the half.

Behind the three point shooting of Jefferson and some terrific pressure defense, UConn started the half on a bit 23-11 run, expanding the lead to 19 in the first 8 minutes. It might as well been 30 and that is basically where it ended up.

UConn just stretched out the lead it appeared that, like their coach, Duke was happy the game was over and feeling good that they wouldn't be facing them again next year. I'm sure Williams, who had a nice game, will be happy to never see a UConn jersey on the court with her ever again.

Moriah Jefferson Player of the Game

Jefferson had another great performance with her 18 points and her 3 point shooting percentage is back over 40% after going 3-4. But while her offense was great, it was her defense that made a big difference in the game. Once UConn went into their full court and pressure defense, Duke had no answers. Between her and Nurse, they have maybe the best defensive backcourt in the country. After the Stanford game, based on fan reaction, you would have thought they were the worst. Silly Huh.

There were several concerns before the game voiced by many fans and I'm pretty sure they answered them all. Other than that 3 minutes hiccup, UConn outscored them by 42 points.

So, how did my prediction go? Let's review.

A few things you can always count on. It will rain right after you wash your car. The Cubs won't win a world series and Duke will lose by a lot to UConn. Well, in Duke's case, maybe they can change that this year.

Nope. No change.

I'd have to say after watching both the South Carolina game and the Kentucky game that Duke has a shot to keep it close. For that to happen, a few things have to happen.

1. UConn has to shoot 33% or less on three point shots. If UConn is 40% or more, it's going to get ugly.

Guess what, it got ugly and UConn shot 41%.

2. Duke has to hold UConn's fast break opportunities to a minimum.

Fast break points-DUKE 2,UCONN 17.

3. Slow down Stewart. Bump and hold like the other teams have. They have the size to do it.

Stewart with 14 points 5 rebounds 6 turnovers. They did a good job but Stewart took herself out of the game.

Do those three things and they can keep it close. But those three things have only to do with Duke stopping UConn. Can Duke score against the improving UConn defense? Can they hit at a higher percentage than the 44% from the field and 29% on 3's that they have done to date?

They only were able to do 2 out of 3.  And UConn's defense was outstanding, holding Duke to 31% for the game.

Oh yeah. I left off their coach. She might have to be home with the flu for Duke to win.

Enough said. Her post game presser was disgusting. Blaming the players without taking any responsibility is just something I find distasteful.

Duke is too young, not quick enough and their defense is made for UConn's 3 point loaded offense.

Yep, Yep and more Yep.

UConn by 15+.

I keep underestimating this team. It's good for the Mojo.

Andra Espinoza Hunter, 5-10 Ossining High School (Gauchos)
Can stroke it from the three-point line.  She is a very good athlete with the ability to create her own shot and shots for others.  At such a young age she stood out as a top player, regardless of age at the camp.  She definitely has a maturity and work ethic beyond her years.  Andra showed she can change speed with and without the ball.  Espinoza Hunter also displayed a high concentration level during instruction (eyes always on the speaker).

Looks happy here!

I'll have the post game report for the Duke game out sometime tomorrow. I'm hoping to squeeze in some writing between hugs from my grandkids.

I will give you a quick few observations from the Duke game. We had pretty good seats tonight and got to say hello to quite a few Boneyard friends who are always fun to hang out with at halftime. UConnChappette, ChicagoGG, CF, TonyC, DannyK, DavidK, Philster, and more. Mrs. Kibitzer was there as well and she reports that Kib is doing much better and is planning on going to Sunday's game. That is really really really good news. But my day was made when a nice woman a few seats away asked me if I was DoggyDaddy. I said yes, and she went on to tell me how much she enjoys my Blog and she reads it every day. I was so flattered and I thanked her. So a shout out to Buster of the Boneyard.

Other than that one Duke run, UConn just dominated a pretty good team.

If this is the Moriah Jefferson that UConn will have the rest of the year, turn out the lights, the party's over......

This was as sloppy as I've seen UConn.......and still win by 31.

I predict some fans will focus on the Duke run and use that as a way to diminish the UConn win.

Geno was NOT happy with Stewart tonight.

UConn was down 24-23 with around 5 minutes left. I turned to my friend, Dan, and said "the last five minutes is UConn time, time to make a run". They finished with a 10-2 run and control at the half 33-26.

For those not at the game, UConn runs a promo that if the team scores 82 points or more everyone gets wings from Buffalo Wild Wings with their ticket stub. In the men's game yesterday, they came up short when they held the ball at the end with the crowd screaming at them to shoot. Tonight at the women's game, we knew the would shoot when the had the ball with 38 seconds left. I have to admit, I started the chant and the XL erupted in "we want wings, we want wings, we want wings.... ". Yes that was my doing. And magically, Stokes hit a beautiful 3 point shot to put them at 83. We got wings...We got wings......We got wings......!!!!

I'll have a detailed post game report sometime Tuesday or Wednesday.

    **************************************************

A couple of big upsets tonight. Minnesota defeated #12 Nebraska 72-69 and Washington defeated #5 Texas A&M 70-49. Yep, a 21 point beat down by an unranked team. Maybe the Aggies will move down in the poll after a loss this time.

Just a pet peeve of mine. I know the AAC is not a great conference but it's where UConn is right now, so all the teams need our support. Two of the top teams (outside of UConn) played in their AAC openers Sunday against each other. Eastern Carolina visited South Florida and while it wasn't a picture of great basketball, it is really no different than 90% of the games that are played in WCBB. "Bad passing, out-of-control drives, horrible body language and poor fundamentals." was how one UConn fan described the game.

I'd remind UConn fans that these teams are UConn's conference mates, good or bad and they need our support.

The AAC is not alone in bad basketball. Check out a few beauties.......

#14 Georgia losing to Seton Hall Box Score  A combined 32 TO's and around 25% shooting on 3's.

#20 Michigan State losing to unranked Northwesten Box Score Lousy shooting percentages in this one. A combined 33 TO's.

9-3 Virginia lost to 4-8 Davidson. I'm sure this was a great game to watch.

Three different conferences in the ACC, SEC and Big Ten. Three crappy games filled with "Bad passing, out-of-control drives, horrible body language and poor fundamentals."

It's much more enjoyable to make fun of teams outside the conference and better for UConn.

************************************************

#8 Tennessee defeated #10 Oregon Sunday. Isabelle Harrison is a terrific player and there is no doubt Tennessee would be in big trouble without her. 20 points 12 rebounds and 5 assists.

Great defense, lousy offense for Tennessee as usual. The Lady Vols had a sparkling 7 assists. They were 0-3 on three pointers and are now under 30% as a team for the season. If they want to make the final four this year, they need to play better offensively or it will be another disappointing season for Tennessee.
