A Daily look at scores from yesterday, a list of top performers in those games and of course a little opinion.
Just a reminder - The Boneyard stopped allowing the posting of alerts when I have a new entry. Please look at my Facebook page if you want to know when I post to the blog. I update that Facebook page every time I add something here. Thanks.
Ahhh....Refs. With the Notre Dame / UConn game coming up soon, refereeing is a big topic of conversation among the fans of both teams.
UConn fans are pretty consistent in their criticisms of ND's apparent strategy to take charges, otherwise know as the ND flop. Now, I'm not saying they do it on purpose...ah...of course I am saying that. It's clear they are looking for that play on most drives to the basket. And with the difficult job of making the right call on all those plays, the refs are bound to get a few wrong.
I think reputation helps and many teams seem to get the benefit of the doubt with the majority of those calls. I believe that refs at too quick to call charges when they are clearly not the the right call. Sometimes it seems it's just to be dramatic, you know....blow that whistle, point the other way and skip a few times.
They don't always seem to follow the set rules.
Is the defending player outside the circle under the basket? I've seen the ref's miss that. Wouldn't it be easy to look at the video to get it right?
Is the defender fully set before the offensive player picks up her dribble? I believe that is one criteria, but I've seen players pick up the dribble and take their initial step to the basket before the defender slides in front of them. Is the defender set? Yes, but it's too late for the offensive player to change direction. Refs call that a charge all the time, and they are wrong.
If the defender starts to fall before full contact is made, CALL THE FLOP. Just call it. It's obvious and many refs start to make the call for what they think will happen. Not good enough.
I guess DVR's with slow motion capabilities make it easy to second guess. But even playing some of these charge call in regular speed you can tell when the refs miss these.
Charge/Block calls can change a game in a heartbeat. And refs need to be more consistent in a call that important. I believe that the calls need to protect the offensive players and that doesn't seem to be that important to the officials as it appears to me that they call more charges than blocks.
So, bottom line? WCBB refs stink. And there is nothing we can do about it. Well, except complain about it. We fans are really good at that.

I watched some of the Notre Dame-Maryland game tonight. I wanted to see ND again and add those observations to the Preview I am working on. Well, it didn't help. Maryland was as bad as they were against them last year in the NCAA semi-finals. A typical Brenda Freese offense. They don't make a lot of shots. They played scared and intimidated right from the start. Now, some of that is Notre Dames tough zone defense. But Maryland just panicked with the pressure. There were a few occasions that Maryland players threw the ball right to a Notre Dame player like they didn't see her. UGLY. Even with Brianna Turner out early with a shoulder injury, ND just hammered Maryland.
So, I did see a few things that will help me write a detailed analysis of Notre Dame and how they match up with UConn. But until I hear how Turner is doing, I have to write around her impact. Hard to do as her absence brings a lot of scenarios into play that won't be there is she plays. She will have an MCI tomorrow but I would be that even if it's not serious, they wouldn't risk her in an "unimportant" OOC game. Look for the preview on Friday.
So, without further ado!!!
