A Daily look at scores from yesterday, a list of top performers in those games and of course a little opinion.
I'll be writing my post game report gleaned from my excellent view and seat in the Webster Arena sometime Saturday, so look for it soon!!
While the post game report will about the team and their performance against DePaul, I'd like to share with you all my experience tonight in Bridgeport.
It all started innocently enough with a quiet ride from Bloomfield. My wife, Doggymomma, as she now likes to be called, and I drove down with some good friends. Thankfully, I didn't have to drive and did what I do best. Took a little nap. Our friends had shown up a little late (a theme for the evening) and we were going to be late for our 5:30 reservation at the Barnum Publick House on Broad Street in Bridgeport.
We called to make sure they would hold our table. The young lady that answered had no clue what we were talking about and said to hold on she would get the hostess. I said to myself, then why they hell did she answer the phone? Anyway, the hostess gets on the line and after around 6 or more "Hello", "yes, Hello", "are you there?" kinda conversation, we were able to get her to understand that we wanted to hold our table and would be late. The young woman, clearly in over her head, said no problem, we can hold it. We asked if she wanted our name and she said "no, we will hold the table" and then hung up. I knew at that time we were in trouble, but we had no idea how much.
We arrived around 5:50 and our friends dropped us off in front to grab the table while they parked. It was so cold out, we were happy to do that. As they drove away, we could see in the restaurant window that it was a madhouse. We walk in and ask about our table under the name Kay. That is what our friends said it was under. The hostess and the manager had this frazzled look about them. Like their night was a nightmare and they just wanted to go home.
They looked at their table chart and told us they didn't have that name. I said you have to be kidding me, I walked away swearing. I have no patience with this stuff. My wife talked to them some more and eventually they took out another list. We tried our friends first name and they had a reservation with her first name and some strange last name. It sounded Hawaiian and kinda similar to their last name if you drank a few Mai Tai's first.
Thankfully, they did have a table set for us and our friends showed up after parking around 5 minutes later. The seats were next to the store front windows and you could feel the cold air filtering in. I think it was only1/16 inch thick glass. My poor wife wore her coat the entire time we were there.
Time. Sometimes it seems to stand still and sometimes it seems to last forever. Tonight, it seemed that just our table stood still and we would be there forever. It took ten minutes after we all were seated and freezing to get the attention of a waiter. She wasn't ours but she got someone over quickly and he filled our water glasses with great enthusiasm. We were happy, it was only 6:10 and we had plenty of time to get to the 7:30 game. Yeah, Right.
The next time we could get someone's attention, it was 6:20 and again it wasn't our waiter. At least he made an effort and took our order and said he would get the slip to our waiter. We nervously said ok and hoped for the best. We ordered some wings and our dinners and waited. And waited. And waited. Someone walked past the kitchen and said they looked out of control in there. Great.
We finally got our wings at around 7:00. Forty minutes after ordering. And 10 minutes later, they brought our three of our meals. The problem was there were four of us. We ate slowly, hoping the last dinner would come out. S-L-O-W-L-Y. But it just wasn't happening. We caught the waiter's attention again and told him to forget the order and just get the manager. After FIVE more minutes, the manager came to our table. After we explained the horrible night at his restaurant, he didn't charge us for dinner with a feeble "sorry" and walked away. We left a decent tip for the waiter. It wasn't his fault and walked out to the cold air for our ten minute walk to the arena. None of us satisfied.
The dinners were lousy too. I'll mention the name again. Barnum Publick House. Bridgeport. NEVER go there. Ever.
We eventually get to the game and got to our seats with the score 17-16 UConn after like 5 minutes. I couldn't believe the pace of the game.
Everything was great once we settled in. I was happy to see so many of my Boneyard friends. It's a great group of folks. I promised a shout out to my friend Dan, who went to DePaul law school and rooted hard for the Huskies. And of course to my Boneyard friends Danny and Dave K, TonyC, Radylady, sTu, Sonny, CF, and most of all Kibitzer's wife and daughter who mentioned that the tough old bird was watching the game tonight in his hospital room, working hard to regain his strength so he can go home. We are all pulling for you, Dave!!
Again, look for my DePaul post game report sometime later on Saturday. It was a great game on many levels.
