A Daily look at scores from yesterday, a list of top performers in those games and of course a little opinion.
I'm sure that many UConn fans are just shaking their heads over the collapse of Stanford this year after beating UConn in November and moving into the No. 1 spot in the coaches poll. In their next 8 games they have gone 4-4 with losses to Texas, UNC, Chattanooga and today Tennessee.
Now, these are all good teams. No shame in losing to them. But they lost by 16 to UNC, by 8 to unranked Chattanooga and 19 today to Tennessee. Two of their wins were no things of beauty either, winning by only 5 against New Mexico in a game they were down late, 12 against Hawaii.
Their season statistics are god-awful compared to past Stanford teams and it seems they just forgot how to play on both sides of the ball.
They shot 25% today and had 2 assists. Yes, that's right. A few weeks ago I hammered Tennessee for having only 2 assists in another game. I never thought I would see that again by a supposed top team but here it was. Ugly ball played by a Tara team. Maybe changing the offense to fit the players wasn't the best thing to do???
I know that fans of other teams like South Carolina and now Tennessee are using the UConn loss to Stanford as proof that UConn is vulnerable and can be beat. I'd answer that with one word, FLUKE. It was a fluky loss and as anyone can see by the results since then, UConn has gone the other way beating Notre Dame at their place by 19 and hammering a very good DePaul team by over 30. Stanford seems to be getting worse while UConn keeps getting better and better.

Congrats to the Tennessee team for beating Stanford on Saturday. Lots of optimism in Knoxville and it's my job, of course, to bring them down to earth.
- They beat what is clearly a mediocre Stanford team (see above).
- Tennessee shot 38% from the field and 29% on 3's.
- Without the 4-8 from Massengale, the rest of the team shot 1-9 on 3's.
- They had 16 assists and 17 TO's.
How were the minutes and points/rebounds/assists distributed by class?
- Seniors Burdick, Harrison, Massengale - 75 minutes, 36 points, 17 rebounds, 9 assists
- Juniors Graves, Jones, Moore - 45 minutes, 14 points, 14 rebounds, 0 assists
- Sophs Reynolds, Carter - 45 minutes, 4 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists
- Freshman Nared, Dunbar, Middleton, Tucker - 30 minutes, 5 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists
I don't know about you, but the returning players next year won't scare many teams next year. Lots of question marks, even with Deshields joining the line up next year. Can Russell be effective for a full season with her bad feet. Can Tucker get back her skills after 2 years of not playing?
Yes, Tennessee fans, enjoy the win. But your team needs to find an offense to get to the final four.
