A Daily look at scores from yesterday, a list of top performers in those games and of course a little opinion.
What an incredible game tonight in Chicago. Notre Dame defeated DePaul 94-93 in overtime. It was an exciting game, but sad at the same time. DePaul had this game won and they lost it at the FT line.
With five minutes left in regulation DePaul had a 73-68 lead and was going to the free throw line. Hrynko went 1-2 for a six point lead. From that point on until the end of the game, Brittany Hrynko made only 3-12 free throws. Really. 3-12. And Megan Rogowski missed two in OT.
So, for the last five minutes of the game and the five minutes OT, DePaul shot 4-16 or 25% from the FT line. Do you know how hard it is to shoot that poorly? It's not easy. And the rest of the game was not so good either. They were 8-13 for a total of 12-29, a sparkling 41%.
The sad thing is, the free throw shooting will overshadow the great game that DePaul played. Notre Dame dominated the boards and FT defense, but DePaul dominated in every other facet of the game. This just made the game in Bridgeport with DePaul more interesting.
DePaul had four players in double figures led by Hrynko with 32, even with the 5-16 from the line. Megan Podkowa had a nice game with 20 points and guard Chanise Jenkins had a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Notre Dame was led again by the incomparable Jewell Loyd, who is the true diamond of WCBB. She had 41 points tying a Notre Dame team record along with 12 rebounds, going 15-18 from the line including the tying FT's in regulation and the winning two FT's with five seconds left in OT. This after being named ACC player of the week. Look for this to be a regular occurrence.
Great news for ND was the great play by Madison Cable who made some big shots including a late three pointer and finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Taya Reimer had a double double as well with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
ND will continue to improve and their trip to the final four will be determined by the health of Brianna Turner. They are not good enough to do it without her.
So, without further ado!!!
