Doggy's Doghouse 2/3/19

Congrats to the Pats, who won a hard fought 13-3 game against the Rams. It was a lot of fun watching the game with good friends and great food!!!!

Of course that means I was out late and very tired! So this blog is all you get!!!

Two upsets in the top 25 Sunday.

And then there were none. In a BIG upset North Carolina took down the last undefeated team in Div I WCBB, beating No. 7 North Carolina State 64-51. The Wolfpack dropped to 21-1 and 8-1 on the season. This was the second big upset for North Carolina and Sylvia Hatchell recently as the Tar Heels also upset at the time No. 1 Notre Dame. Even though North Carolina is only 14-9 on the season, these two wins should give their resume a boost and a likely lock in the NCAA tournament.

Unranked Minnesota, who has spent most of the season in the top 25 beat surprising Big Ten leading No. 17 Rutgers 60-47. The Gophers outscored the Scarlett Knights 43-23 and really dominated the game. This was only the second loss for Rutgers in the conference. Coach Lindsay Whalen must have had her team sky high for this game!

Several of the top teams had really easy times Sunday.

No. 4 Oregon hammered Colorado 102-43, No. 5 Notre Dame destroyed Georgia Tech 90-50.

Just a reminder that there are some really bad teams in ALL conferences.

I have to respond once against to all the fans that think that UConn will be doomed to lose early in the NCAA tournament because of the lack of production from the bench. There are very few teams in the top 25 that goes more than 6 deep in actual statistical production in COMPETATIVE games. The games that are never in doubt don't count.

Here are a few examples from Sunday's games.

No. 6 Mississippi State beat Alabama by only 15 points in a game much closer than was expected. While this wasn't a real competitive game, MSU got little more than minutes played in the box score. The bench played 58 minutes and had 5 points on 1-12 shooting, 0-3 on threes, 7 rebounds and NO assists. UConn fans would be screaming about that bench play.

In the North Carolina upset of NC State one bench was totally ineffective and one contributed somewhat. The Tar Heel bench in 17 minutes had 1 rebound. That's IT! The Wolfpack bench was better. In 30 minutes they were 2-5 from the field, had 8 rebounds and 2 assists scoring 5 points. Meh....

I could find examples of weak bench play for top teams in competitive games every week. It's just a fact in WCBB. UConn is not alone in this situation. But I'll tell you this. I'd rather have a starting five like UConn has than any 6-7 players rotation other teams have. It's all about how much talent you have on the court. You can't play more than 5 at a time.

By David in Naples!!!!!

Congrats to Napheesa Collier for joining the exclusive 2,000/1,000 Club at UConn. Pheesa now has over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. Only four other Huskies belong to this special group. But first, who is NOT in this club. DT, Sue Bird, Stef Dolson, Svetlana, Kara Wolters and Kerry Bascom were all great, but not in the 2,000/1,000 Club. That is not a slight to those great players, but rather illustrates just what a great accomplishment Collier has achieved.

Also in the 2,000/1,000 Club are Maya, Stewie, Tina and Rebecca Lobo. Interestingly, there are 11 players with 2,000 or more points and 8 players with 1,000 rebounds. But, only 5 have done both..!!

Go Pheesa..!!

  1. I did see where one team got TWO 19 point scorers off the bench, haven’t seen that very often. Also see South Carolina coming on strong, and with that recruiting class! OMG
