This UConn fan loves his Bagels!!!

And my beautiful wife of 44 years and I met on a blind date 49 years ago.

Look how young we looked!

I'm a lucky guy!!!

I can't believe I just wrote a blurb on Saylor just two days ago and now she has enrolled at UConn early. Plenty of links in the UConn Link section. And I'm sharing the link to the video highlights again. I also added a link to a tweet with a spectacular highlight video. If the embedded code doesn't show the video, click on the link.

MaxPreps has a ton of shorter clips. I can only post a link to the site with the videos. You have to click on them there. And there are quite a few. Sorry if there are commercials you have to watch first.

Now, I have no idea how long it will take for her to get up to speed enough to contribute important minutes. I can imagine her getting 7-10 minutes at the end of games to start and then Geno will see where his comfort level is for her to get more significant minutes. It may not happen at all. I read this on another message board and thought it was a good thing to share on why she might see minutes.

1) She is a coaches daughter.
3) Her perimeter defense is on par with Aubrey's=best on the team.
2) She is a legit 6'2" and sturdy=versatility to defend 1-4 and the ability to crate matchup problems.
4) She is a legit deep shooter=2nd best on this roster.
5) She is an insanely good passer and ball handler for her size.

Even if she doesn't see a lot of minutes, her early head start will be huge for her playing in the regular rotation next year. And she will have FOUR years after this semester so she will still be part of the 2025 graduating class with Azzi Fudd, Caroline Ducharme and Amari DeBerry. I can't wait to see her in a UConn uniform. What a pleasant surprise.

No. 8 UCLA vs Washington - Postponed

UConn women's basketball's game scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 26, against Providence has been postponed. The Friars, which announced a pause in team activities on Jan. 12, announced today they had to extend that pause due to additional COVID-related issues. No makeup date has been announced.

The No. 6 Baylor women's basketball team, which has been on a COVID-19 pause since Jan. 5, will be back in action Saturday against visiting Iowa State. However, coach Kim Mulkey's availability won't be determined until game day.

The in-state rivalry showdown between Michigan State and No. 13 Michigan in women's basketball, scheduled for Monday in Ann Arbor, has been postponed because of COVID-19 protocols within the Spartans' program.

Great teams get to the free throw line more often and make more attempts than average teams. UConn, over the years, has been proof of this statement. This season, the Huskies have taken 128 free throw tries versus only 70 for the 7 opponents. The 2nd part of the equation is barely true. UConn is making 70.3% of their charity stripe attempts, while opponents are making 70.0%. It still comes out to 41 extra points for the Huskies over 7 games.

More free throws results from more fouls. UConn has always fouled less than their opponents. This season, the Huskies have 96 personal fouls versus 127 for their opponents. Last year, UConn was fouled 465 times and awarded 439 free throws. Opponents were fouled only 356 times by UConn and, as a result, took only 307 charity stripe tries. Add in that opponents made their free throw attempts only 64.2% of the time and the point difference was 132 points. In some games those extra points don't matter, but in close games it can be the difference.

And........

For all of Geno's crying about what a lousy shooting team he has this season, the Huskies are ranked #1 in the country in Field Goal %. That is basically the % of shots taken that go in. It includes lay-ups, mid range jumpers and three point shots. Everything but free throws. Here are the rankings:

1. UConn   53.48%
2. Missouri 51.83%
3. Boston Univ.  50.92%
4. Iowa  50.50%
5. Ohio State  50.42%
6. Texas A&M 49.91%
7. Michigan   49.68%
8. Baylor   49.15%

All the way down at #25 is Stanford at 46.70%.   8-)
Go Huskies..!!

SEC games can be tough to watch sometimes, check out how often Doggy's UGGY award is won by an SEC match up, but I like to look for the positive in anything so one of the positives in the Tennessee Georgia game last night was that there was a lot of talk about.

There is not enough space to talk about the whole game so I’ll just talk about the last minute. Let me set the table —

Georgia played horribly for the early part of the game.Tennessee manhandled them out to a 17 point lead. Then Tennessee lost its edge, Georgia came back and not only caught up but took an eight point lead. Tennessee woke up and started calling back the lead and had the lead down to three points with one minute to go. 1:00 Georgia has the ball, Morrison takes a three pointer and misses 0:55 Tennessee rebounds and sets up their offense 0:39.2 Morrison reaches in to grab the ball goes to the floor and ties it up. The announcers explained that it’s Georgia’s ball, so the situation is that they have a three point lead and the ball, so should be in the driver’s seat.

Except the announcers get it wrong, it’s Tennessee’s ball, a very different situation. 0:29 Tennessee in bounds and Davis hits a layup to cut the lead to 1 0:22 Georgia ball, Tennessee obviously has to foul, but there have been zero files in the quarter so they have to foul five times. They inbound the ball and the player runs around before getting fouled running seven seconds off the clock. 0:17 Second inbound, Horton fouls but five seconds run off.

The announcer states that Tennessee needs to do this two more times, but they realize their error and correct it to three more times 0:16 Tennessee realizes they can’t give up five second run off of the clock for every foul, so this time they foul within the first second. 0:15 rinse and repeat another foul in the first second 0:15 Georgia substitutes Staiti in, their top scorer and top rebounder, but who has had an off day with only two points in the game. However, she’s an 89% free throw shooter. Georgia is given the ball at the end line and tries to get it in but calls timeout before the time expires. That allows them to inbound it at the other end of the court 0:13 Georgia in bounds to Staiti, who just stands there and waits to be fouled. I think I understand the rationale but she might’ve had a clear path to the basket — it seems to me she should have at least headed toward the basket to see what happens, because a wide-open layout beats a free throw attempt anytime but she stands there and gets fouled.

Georgia has a slim one-point lead, one free throw makes it two point game in the second obviously makes it a three-point game 0:13 Staiti, the 89% free throw shooter, clangs the first one off the rim 0:13 Staiti, the 89% free throw shooter misses the second. The probability of an 89% free throw shooter missing two in a row is roughly 1%. You could watch her go to line for two, 100 times and 99 times she would hit one or two and only once would she miss two 0:12 but the rebound isn’t controlled and goes out of bounds. It went off someone’s knee, and they show multiple replays but the announcers can’t figure it out. The refs give it to Georgia. 0:12 so George’s only up one but they got the ball at their end of the court with a chance to pass it in get fouls and maybe hit some free throws, but Staiti is the in bounder (or maybe I should say she isn’t) and she doesn’t get it passed in on time so turn over to Tennessee, timeout taken so Tennessee can take it out at their end of the court 0:03 Tennessee sets up a play gets it to Kushkituah underneath, but the ball goes to the floor and is tied up.

The last tie up went to Georgia so obviously this one goes to Tennessee right? The announcers declare that the ball will go to Georgia. Unfortunately, the announcers are not in charge, the refs get it right, and Tennessee gets to inbound the ball. 0:01 Tennessee in bounds, I think it Georgia player tipped the ball over her head and falls into Caldwell’s arms. She just stands there nobody fouls her and time runs out. Georgia wins. As my wife Polly said watching the replay “nobody deserves to win”. This is their first win in Knoxville since 1996, which means they haven’t one in Knoxville in a quarter-century and not a player on either roster was born when Georgia last won in Tennessee.

No. 1 Stanford 82 Utah 54  - After a slow start, Stanford easily beat a mediocre Utah team. The mystery of the game is that Haley Jones sat on the bench the entire game. No reason given at this time. Nothing. Kinda weird. The best player on the No. 1 team in the country didn't play and Tara had nothing to say. Hmmm.....Anyway, the other weird thing was until just a few minutes were left in the game, only 4 Stanford players scored any points. The other 7 players, including 2 starters had zip, zero, naha points. Oh for everything. Star freshman forward/center Cameron Brink had an interesting box score. In 8 minutes, she had 5 fouls. I didn't think that was possible. Well, I suppose we will find out soon about Jones. I hope she is ok.

No. 25 Washington State 77 USC 81 OT - Congrats to Washington State for the second shortest stay right behind Tennessee. My only issue is there is a slim possibility that they allow Tennessee to possibly stay in at No. 25. Losing to a bad team like USC? Terrible.
