Doggy's Doghouse 1/29/2021

So, the boys wanted a sleepover Friday night. Barrett is usually in his crib. Not quite in a bed yet.

So they were in Logan's bed. There were bets on how long they would last.

Logan wanted to sleep and Barrett wanted to chat.

Logan read him three books and Barrett was still chatting loud.

45 minutes later they were both in their own beds!

I know, sometimes it's hard to be upbeat after a tough loss. Certainly a game we all thought UConn would win. They sure had a shot.

But this is not the end of the season. It's not the end of UConn's ability to get into the NCAA Tournament and it's not the end of UConn's chances to win the National Championship.

In fact, Charlie Creme still has them as a No. 1 seed.

This team is still evolving, as you can tell by the nice contributions from the three freshmen on the bench.

All three looked really good in a very tough game on the road. This will bode well for future games including the tough one coming up on Sunday against DePaul.

And speaking of freshman, Paige Bueckers showed a national audience how good she is. "Good" doesn't really do her justice. She is maybe the most efficient guard in the country.

I can't stand ESPN's women's coverage but they made a couple of good points when the question was asked - "Should UConn be worried".

Voepel - This is more a case of what Chelsea Dungee did right than what UConn's defense did wrong in Arkansas' 90-87 win. She's one of the country's elite scorers, and has put up at least 30 points 11 times in her Arkansas career, against all kinds of defenses designed to stop her.

This is a great point. Fans tend to be critical of their team and don't give enough credit to the opponent. Dungee is a fantastic player. She will be a Top 10 draft pick in the 2021 WNBA draft. I love her game. I just wish it wasn't so "on" against UConn.

Creme - Mechelle nailed it. I don't think there are any big concerns for UConn heading into this stretch of games that also includes South Carolina on Feb. 8. Olivia Nelson-Ododa should be that player at the rim, protecting against the kind of drives on which Dungee thrived. But a combination of foul trouble and ineffectiveness put Nelson-Ododa on the bench for more than half the game.

No, there aren't any big concerns. But Nelson-Ododa is certainly a small one. She is so talented but seems to struggle in big spots. UConn is talented enough to overcome that issue but her coming up big against South Carolina would go a long way in making us all a little happier!

Yes, I really hate when they lose. And for a few minutes I am really cranky. Just ask my wife. But I really like this team. Bueckers is good enough to lead this team to the Final Four and more. And Westbrook makes these two the best pair of guards in the country. Perspective. Please.

And if you need to feel better about the loss, just watch this video a few times.

Maya Moore was great as a freshman. Breanna Stewart too.

Bueckers is the best.

No. 10 Arizona at USC - Postponed

No. 11 Oregon at Utah - Postponed

No. 25 South Dakota State at Denver - Postponed

The No. 11 Oregon women's basketball team has postponed its games at Utah on Friday and at Colorado on Sunday because of COVID-19 protocols within the Ducks' program. The Pac-12 intends to reschedule both games. Oregon is the third women's basketball program in the conference that is currently on pause, joining Cal and Arizona.

UConn's loss to Arkansas is certainly a disappointment. The 90-87 score is also puzzling. Normally, the Huskies scoring 87 points is a formula for winning. Not last night. Arkansas scored 54 points in just 2 periods to put the Huskies deep in a hole. A closer examination shows just what the Hogs did in the 2nd and 3rd periods to bury our dogs.

1. Prior to last night, the most points UConn had given up this year, in a quarter, was 20. Both Creighton and Xavier had a 20 point quarter against UConn. The Huskies won both games fairly easily.
2. In the 2nd period, Arkansas scored 23 points on 52% shooting from the field (10-19). They made 50% of the 6 three point shots.
3. In the 3rd period, the Hogs burned the Huskies for 31 points on an incredible 71% shooting. They were an amazing 86% from beyond the arc (6-7).
4. Interestingly, while on fire shooting from anywhere from the court, Arkansas couldn't hit a free throw, going 1-7 or 14% in that 3rd period.
5. Arkansas came back to earth in the 4th period, shooting 36%, but the damage was done. The Huskies 56% shooting closed the gap, but not entirely.
6. For the game, UConn was the better shooting team, 55% vs 52%. But the hogs made 1 extra three and 2 extra free throws. That was the 3 point difference.

Reload for Sunday against DePaul. Learn and improve. An out of conference loss, on the road, during the season is not going to hurt the Huskies in March. It can help if some lessons are learned.

Go Huskies..!!

No. 5 UCLA at Arizona State - Late Game

No. 6 Stanford 77 Washington State 49 - Hayley Jones and Kiana Williams each scored 16 points as No. 6 Stanford beat Washington State. Talk about dominance. It was Stanford's 69th consecutive victory in the series. Ashten Prechtel added 11 points for Stanford. The Cardinal never lost to the Cougars in a series that dates to 1983. Bella Murekatete scored a career-high 17 points for Washington State. The teams played back-to-back games in Pullman because local COVID-19 protocols have prevented Stanford from playing home games for two months. Stanford beat Washington State 71-49 on Wednesday night.
