From ESPN

Coach of the week: Geno Auriemma, UConn

With wins over Butler, Tennessee and Georgetown, Auriemma is now at 1,101 victories for his career, moving into second place on the Division I list ahead of the late Pat Summitt of Tennessee (1,098) and behind Stanford's Tara VanDerveer (1,106).

After the 72-41 win over the Hoyas on Saturday, Auriemma dismissed the Huskies' play as being "like another bad practice," and expressed frustration with his team's mistakes. It was Geno being Geno, which irritates his critics. His fans see his perfectionism as being why the Huskies have 11 NCAA titles. Auriemma wants them to be ready for what could be a test Thursday, when they travel to No. 15 Arkansas (ESPN2/ESPN App, 5 p.m. ET).

I watched the Arkansas-Georgia game and it was a heck of a game. You can read more in my Top 25 section.

It never ceases to amaze me how stupid some announcers can be.

For the last 4 minutes of the game, Arkansas didn't hit a field goal. They scored only three points all from the free throw line.

For the game they shot 36.9% from the field and 26.7% on threes.

And the announcer says at the end of the game when Georgia won -

"Georgia holds off a hot shooting Arkansas team".

Hot shooting? What a friggin' moron.

Random thoughts...with stats.

1. Apparently, Hailey Van Lith is as bad a player as Nika Muhl. In L'ville's lucky 2 point win over Wake Forrest (7-6), Van Lith played 33 minutes, scored 5 points, shot 2-7 from the field and had 5 turnovers. As a reminder, Nika played 35 minutes, scored 6 points (on 2 threes), shot 2-7 and also had 5 turnovers against Georgetown. Plus Nika had 3 steals and Van Lith had none. Anyway, Nika's performance has been ragged on by some UConn fans. For at least one day, she was slightly better than Hailey Van Lith.  :D

2. Aaliyah Edwards is going to be a great player. I say that because I'm going to point out some flaws in her game. The good clearly outweighs the bad, but as Georgetown showed, the team can be limited when she plays. Aaliyah has played 157 minutes in 9 games. She has not tried a three point shot. The only other Huskies' player to not shoot a three is Piath Gabriel. There is no need to cover Edwards out at the arc until she at least tries a three. In those 157 minutes, Aaliyah has 4 assists and 21 turnovers. By comparison, Mir McLean has 5 assists and 5 turnover in half the minutes.

3. Remember the debate about whether Paige Bueckers would start for UConn? Well she does and leads the team in points (17.1 per game), assists (51), steals (26), minutes per game (35), three point % made (47%), free throws % made (81%) and is 2nd in total rebounds (53). Maybe Geno knows what he is doing after all.  8-)

Go Huskies..!!

DD here - David made a great point about Nika and about one particular play so I added some video to help you see what he is talking about.

David - There was a pass by Nika Muhl at the 3:10 point of the 4th quarter. Aaliyah rebounds a missed shot and passes to Nika. Nika hits a streaking Ono in the hands, chest high with a positively Paige-like pass. Liv, unfortunately, drops the ball and Nika gets no assist and a turnover to for her troubles. That should be a turnover on Olivia. Plays like these are examples of stats can be misleading without context.

First in regular speed

Now in slow motion.

DD again. I watched it a few more times and it could have been that Nika was trying to throw the pass to Christyn, who was a couple of steps ahead of Liv. That might be why there was so much zip on the pass. Either way,  it was Olivia's turnover, not Nika's.

No. 7 Maryland 86 No. 14 Ohio State 88 - The No. 7 Terps lost to No. 14 Ohio State ending a 24-game winning streak against Big Ten opponents that dated to Jan. 9, 2020. Ashley Owusu scored 33 points on 11-for-24 shooting to lead Maryland (11-2, 7-1 Big Ten), which shot 42.9% from the field. Katie Benzan added 22 points, shooting 7-for-12 from 3-point range, while Chloe Bibby added 13 points and Diamond Miller chipped in 10. Madison Greene had 24 points, seven assists and five steals to lead Ohio State. Jacy Sheldon added 21 points and Braxtin Miller added 18 for the Buckeyes, who shot 45.7% from the field. Maryland took a 39-36 lead at halftime, thanks in large part to Benzan, who hit five of her first six 3-point attempts. The teams went back-and-forth throughout the third quarter, with Ohio State taking a 62-60 lead. Owusu hit a jumper with 6:08 to play in the third quarter to tie the game at 69, but back-to-back 3′s by Miller sparked a 14-3 run that helped the Buckeyes take control of the game. Maryland nearly erased a nine-point deficit in the final minutes, forcing three straight Ohio State turnovers to cut the deficit to 85-80 with 21 seconds to play. A late 3 by Benzan made it 86-83 with nine seconds left, but two free throws by Greene sealed the victory.

No. 19 Arkansas 73 No. 22 Georgia 75 - In a great finish Georgia won the game on a field goal with 0.9 on the clock. Arkansas falls to 2-5 in conference play with the loss. The Razorbacks have not won in Athens since 2009. In the first half it looked like the road woes would continue. Georgia led by as many as ten before the Hogs crawled back into the game. Arkansas would take its first lead with 1:33 left in the half. The second half saw the teams reverse roles. It was the Arkansas offense that came out hitting shots. Erin Barnum had her best quarter of the season to put the Hogs up by seven. The Razorbacks would take that lead late into the 4th, but Georgia would fight back. The Bulldogs would briefly take the lead with under two minutes to play. With the two tied at 73 and under a minute to play, Gabby Connally would hit a field goal with 0.9 left. Chelsea Dungee finished with 25 points going 11-14 from the free throw line in the loss. For Georgia, Jenna Stati owned the paint with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Two games, two upsets!!!
