UConn had a tough outing on Wednesday night when they take a trip to Omaha and the D.J. Sokal arena to take on the Creighton Bluejays. UConn won the first match up by eight 63-55 and it's going to take another great defensive effort to duplicate that win.

There is a really good article I linked from the Courant and Alexa Phlippou. It cronicles all the injuries and how the team is working to overcome them. It will be another tough game without Dorka Juhasz if she can't go. I'm thinking she will need more time.

Well, it didn't end the way I wanted it to, but what a game between No. 7 Tennessee and unranked Arkansas. The Lady Vols won in overtime 86-83 behing Joran Horston with 24 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists and Rae Burrell's 21 points. The Razorbacks had their chances but missed two free throws with 8 seconds left that would have tied the game up.

This was similar to all the fourth quarter comebacks Tennessee had earlier in the season. Up next for Tennessee is a tough Florida team on the road on Thursday night. GO GATORS!!!

There was a big Big Ten game Monday night when No. 5 Indiana visited No. 6 Michigan. It wasn't a good night for the Hoosiers. They battled to a 32-30 halftime deficit but the Wolverines used a big 3rd quarter to take a 12 point lead going into the final 10 minutes. They held on for the 65-50 win. I didn't watch the game but my friend "Linkster" watched the game and he said - "I have no problem facing either in the NCAA's."

I like his confidence.

Top 16

It has only been four days since the first “reveal” of the top 16 seeds, and already a lot has happened.

The top 16:

1. South Carolina
2. Stanford
3. NC State
4. Tennessee

5. Louisville
6. Indiana
7. Texas
8. Arizona

9. Michigan
10. Iowa State
11. UConn
12. LSU

13. Baylor
14. Oregon
15. Georgia
16. Kansas State

The 16 teams are shown grouped, because, with some exceptions, it’s more important what seed line you are on them where you are within the seed line.

With UConn ranked number 11, that makes them a three seed. I’ve heard suggestions, but have not confirmed myself, that as a three seed, it might not be possible to place UConn in Bridgeport. I recently had a spirited discussion with a basketball fan who was not fully aware that some of the seeding principles are aspirational, but others are absolute rules. If placing UConn in Bridgeport violates one of the absolute rules, it’s not going to happen.

I also had a talk with TonyC a few minutes ago. He mentioned something I knew, but whose import had not sunk in until our conversation. I’ve taken it on faith that the seeding committee would like to have UConn in Bridgeport to draw a big audience. But, and I’ll ask this as an honest question, do they want fannies in the seats or do they want ticket sales? Those aren’t the same thing. The ticket sales are virtually complete, so while some people purchasing tickets might not show up in Bridgeport if UConn isn’t there, the sale has been made. Sending UConn to a different region might actually increase sales.

At the moment, I think that if UConn is a two seed, they get to go to Bridgeport. If they are a three seed, it’s not so clear.

UConn doesn’t have a lot of opportunities for signature wins in their remaining games (I’ll talk about Tennessee separately), so movement up is largely dependent on teams ahead of us moving down.

Tennessee already stumbled, about two hours after the reveal, but I think that simply swaps Tennessee and Louisville at the moment. Tennessee deserves to drop further but I don’t see them dropping down to the three seed line based on that single loss.

Texas is contributing. They lost a close game to Oklahoma. That might be enough to move them down temporarily, but they have two upcoming games against Baylor, currently number 13 on this list. If they sweep, they probably remain as a two seed. If they split or lose both, they are down at least one seed line.

Of course, if Baylor sweeps Texas, they’re going to make noises about moving up a couple seed lines.

Arizona lost to Stanford. The game was reasonably close; Arizona was within four under four minutes, but Stanford leaned on career highs by both Brink and Van Gytenbeek to earn the win. They were the last of the two seeds so a loss might move them down a seed line but it’s a close call whether that loss would move them below UConn.

Indiana and Michigan face-off Monday. One of them is guaranteed to lose but of course one of them is guaranteed to win. Both are currently listed ahead of UConn. It seems plausible that the loser might slip slightly behind.

Iowa State is the other team ahead of UConn, and they face Kansas State on Wednesday. A minor upset by Kansas State would help UConn.

UConn’s game against Tennessee is getting closer and looming larger. A win by UConn might be enough to move UConn onto the two line, but I fear a loss may make a two seed all but impossible.

Basketball is a game of rhythm and routine. Great shooters get in a rhythm and can't miss. Great teams get into a comfortable routine and play better. Nothing about yesterday's victory over Providence was rhythmic or routine. Consider:

1. The game time was shifted from mid-day Sunday to Sunday night at 7:30 pm.
2. The team bus broke down and the team needed to wait for vans to get to the game.
3. The location of the game was shifted to a campus gym.
4. Dorka was an unexpected scratch due to a injured foot.
5. Due to the snowstorm, UConn could not practice Saturday.

The game itself lacked any rhythm or regular routine. Consier:

1. The two best young shooters on the team, Caroline and Azzi went 2-10 combined from three range.
2. The Huskies had the same number of turnovers (16) & fouls (16) as assists (16).
3. Due to turnovers and sloppy rebounding, Providence took 57 shots, 9 more than UConn.
4. Providence had 20 points off UConn turnovers.
5. Nika Muhl took 0 shots.

This game is best forgotten and marked down as a fluke due to weather and travel.

Go Huskies..!!

Geno said at halftime that the team couldn't practice on Saturday and the bus that was supposed to bring them to the arena wouldn't start. So they have to wait for vans to come to bring them to the game.

And all of that contributed to a really sloppy game for the Huskies.  Using a 13-0 run to end the second quarter, UConn did just enough to hold on for a 69-61 win in what I would call a slugfest. Another very physical game.

Late game, Sunday night, I'll have more in my Monday Blog!

It was just good to win.

Straight from the Dog

It's been a while but there were no upsets in the Top 25 on a Sunday even with ten games being played.

But there was a big game with No. 2 Stanford taking on No. 8 Arizona. This game had some big Pac 12 title implications and also seeding implications. The AP poll will be impacted but that is just window dressing.

A loss against a Top 2 team shouldn't knock Arizona off the 2 seed line, but it leaves them not much margin for error in holding on to that spot.

Tennessee got a verbal committment for 2022 from Edie Darby, little sister of Tennessee sophomore Tess Darby. Edie verballed in November but waited to announce it until Sunday. She is going to be a walk-on after turning down scholarships from lower rated schools. What a great opportunity to be on a team with her sister, maybe room with her and get to practice every day with her. As a walk-on, it's rare they get any real playing time but that is besides the point for her. Clearly it's not about playing but more about family.

Of course, you have some Orange Idiots going over the top for her. This one takes the cake.

"Edie Darby is going to be a 1st or 2nd string All-American before she graduates from UT. Mark my words. She is smart and knows how to play basketball. Check her high school numbers and videos."

1st or 2nd "string" All-American? Not sure I know what that is. But 1st or 2nd TEAM All-American? From a walk-on? Sigh......moron.

Yesterday I said this - Well, No. 3 UConn fell to No. 7 after their loss to unranked (at the time) Georgia Tech. Tennessee lost to unranked but also last place in the SEC Auburn. No comparison between the two unranked teams. Here is Phils take:

I don't disagree but let's examine how different they are.

Massey picks Georgia Tech to defeat Auburn by 12 points on a neutral court.

Massey thinks Tennessee is 5 points better than Georgia Tech on a neutral court.

That means Georgia Tech is much closer to Tennessee than they are to Auburn.

Losing to Georgia Tech hurt, and deservedly resulted in a drop in the rankings. Losing to Auburn is a much, much bigger deal. You can't even partially dismiss the loss as you might if it were on a last-minute buzzer beater, it was a 10 point loss.

Sometimes the better team wins when the weaker team catches fire at the three-point line. Auburn only shot 26% from beyond the arc.

It was an epic, historic beatdown and collapse. Let's see how the voters weigh in. (I know what they should do, but like Doggy, I expect merely a slap on the wrist.)

Providence vs UConn
Sunday, January 30th 2020
7:30 PM
Alumni Hall
Providence, RI
TV: SNY

Connecticut leads the all-times series against the Friars, 41-21, including victories in each of the last 29 meetings. The Huskies hold a 36-11 record vs. Providence in BIG EAST regular-season action and a 4-2 mark in the BIG EAST Tournament.

Providence and Connecticut met just once during the 2020-21 season. The Huskies claimed an 87-50 victory on Jan. 9, 2021 at Gampel Pavilion. UConn only led by one point, 19-18 after the first 10 minutes, but the Huskies used a 53-19 scoring run over the next two quarters to take control of the game.

UConn Providence 1/9/2022
Game Highlights

The Friars are 9-10 on the season and 4-6 in the Big East. Providence scores a paltry 61.4 points per game — the third worst mark in the Big East — on 41.0% shooting. Crooms is their leading scorer with 13.1 points per game. The Friars are turnover-prone, committing 18.7 per game.

The Friars’ defense is better than their offense, allowing 63.1 points per game on 36.1% shooting, the best field goal percentage defense in the league.

What can I say, this is one of those probably conference blowouts. And Geno will be able to spread out the minutes and get Azzi more integrated in the offense. I'm just looking forward to watching this team as they keep fine tuning as the players return.

This will be over early. UConn by 40+

Straight from the Dog

I wrote in several of my blog entries that Texas was overrated. How they moved past UConn in the rankings and then as a 2 seed is beyond me.

Today they lost to a good Oklahomah team on the Sooners' home court 65-63. A big deal for the Big 12 regular season race, and sure as hell shakes up the top ten again.

Texas came in as No. 9 in the AP poll so expect them to fall a couple of spots.

Tennessee lost as the No. 4 in the AP poll but the question is, how far will they fall? Well, No. 3 UConn fell to No. 7 after their loss to unranked (at the time) Georgia Tech. Tennessee lost to unranked but also last place in the SEC Auburn. No comparison between the two unranked teams.

So, will they drop 4 spots? I doubt it. It just feels like the Lady Vols are a new darling for the media. They SO want them to be back. They ain't.

On Sunday, No. 8 Arizona visits No. 3 Stanford. If they lose, where to they go?

My guess if that happens, Tennessee drops to No. 7, UConn moves to No. 8, Arizona drops to No. 9 and Texas drops to No. 10.

But the polls don't really mean much, unless you are South Carolina and then you raise a banner for No. 1.

How would all of this happening impact the seedings?

Well, Arizona and Texas are 2 seeds. If they both lose, do they move to a 3 seed? I believe they could.

Tennessee is a 1 seed. I bet they move into one of the 2 seeds opened by Arizona and Texas losing.

And UConn? Well, I bet they move into the other No. 2 spot. And hopefully back in Bridgeport.

*****************

A Tennessee fan visited a UConn message board and said the following -

"The Arkansas game will be good preparation for them because they have a lot of the same strengths and weaknesses as UConn."

I'm not sure how well he knows either team if that is what he thinks.

Arkansas runs out there  5'7", 5'8", 5'9", 6'1" and 6'5". And the 6'5" Wolfenbarger plays like a guard and not a forward. Small ball.

UConn starts 5'10", 5'11", 6'2", 6'5" and 6'5". How is that anything like Arkansas?

Maybe they have similar styles?

Arkansas takes 27 threes per game.
UConn takes 20 threes per game.

Kinda the same? Maybe?

Arkansas gets to the FT line 20 times per game.
UConn gets to the FT line 13 times per game.

We all know that UConn needs to get to the line more.

I'm sure you can find some similarities between most teams if you look hard enough. But there is no way that playing Arkansas will help Tennessee prepare for UConn.

I don't know if you had a chance to watch the highlights from last year's Providence game that I posted earlier in this blog. I did and while it made me happy it also made me a little sad.

Happy because it was great to see the team win so handily. But sad because the highlights could have been called the Aubrey Griffin show. She was just amazing in this game with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks. I can't wait to see her play against next year.

Texas Two Step Two Seed

Texas with an interesting nine-day stretch starting today.

There currently projected as a two seed. Very unlikely to make it up to a one seed, but a stumble could drop them a seed line and open up a spot for Connecticut.

They play at Oklahoma today ranked number 15 by Massey and 18 by the AP. Then, Covid permitting, they play back to back games against Baylor, at Baylor’s house on Friday, and back home in Texas on Sunday. Baylor isn’t your grandfather’s, father’s, older brother’s Baylor, but they are still ranked 14 by Massey and 11 by the AP.

They will be favored by five over Baylor at home, but the games at Baylor and Oklahoma are very close to even. They could run the table, which will solidify their spot as a two seed. There will probably survive a single loss, but if they drop two, their two seed is in serious jeopardy.

** Phil sent me this before Texas lost to Oklahoma.

By David in Naples

After 16 games, UConn is finally rounding into a rhythm and getting healthy. A quick look at stats after 1/2 the season shows some weird numbers.

For example, Nika has played 264 minutes and has only 2 free throws, missing both. Azzi Fudd has been on the court 102 minutes and has no free throw attempts. Even Piath and Amari are both 2-4 from charity stripe in far less time played.

Here are some others...

1. Olivia leads the team in assists with 66. Evina is 2nd at 57.
2. Dorka has 37 offensive rebounds, just one fewer than Liv. But, in 100 fewer minutes.
3. Only 4 players have appeared in every game. The three bigs (Liv, Dorka, Aaliyah) plus Evina.
4. Olivia has the same number of blocks (33) and turnovers (33).
5. Caroline Ducharme has the 2nd most fouls (33) below only Liv (47).
6. Azzi has made 45.8% of her threes (11-24).
7. UConn has 98 more baskets than opponents, but only 2 more threes & 4 more free throws.
8. Nika has 29 defensive rebounds, 1 more than Christyn in 200 fewer minutes.

And finally, my favorite stat.

CFD has scored 17 of UConn’s 27 points in the 4th quarter of the last 2 games.

Go Huskies..!
