UConn/Oregon Game Previews

Here is my game preview. Lots of good information!

Here is the ESPN game preview. It's maybe the laziest game preview ever. They have Paige Bueckers as a player to watch and list her stats. As if she was playing. Dopes.

Here is Scores 24 game preview. If someone can translate what the hell they said, I would appreciate it.

I'll keep looking for more.

Straight from the Dog

What a great day of women's college basketball!!

Three upsets and another few near upsets.

Numbers 1-6 all played and all won. But one of the games were crazy close.

No. 6 Indiana should have lost. Up one point with 6 seconds left they fouled Purdue with 1.2 left in the game and put an 88% shooter at the line. She missed the first one and made the second to send the game into overtime where Indiana dominated for their 73-68 win.

Several of the other Top 5 games were competative. Arkansas gave No. 1 South Carolina a tough time, Utah was up late against No. 2 Stanford before succuming, and Boston College played Louisville well before losing by 10 points.

There were two blowouts with No. 4 North Carolina State hammering No. 16 Duke by 24 points and No. 5 Tennessee kept on rolling just killing No. 19 Kentucky by 26 points.

Two other upsets in the Top 25 with No. 11 Michigan beating up on No. 8 Maryland 69-49  and No. 24 South Florida losing to unranked UCF 67-51.

I don't envy the voters for the AP poll trying to determine the Top 25. Obviously the top 6 will stay as they all won this week.

But wow...how do you figure out the rest?

No. 7 Arizona and No. 8 Maryland both lost. The question is how far will they drop? Arizona lost to an unranked team and Maryland got hammered in their loss. So maybe No. 9 Iowa State and No. 10 UConn both move up two spots to No. 7 for Iowa State and No. 8 for UConn?

The bottom of the rankings will be much crazier to determine.

Losing this week, No. 15 Georgia Tech, No. 16 Duke (twice), No. 19 Kentucky (twice), No. 21 North Carolina, No. 22 Colorado, No. 24 South Florida, and No. 25 Kansas State (twice).

So, what to do, what to do.....

I would move Duke out of the Top 25 but they will probably stay in the bottom of the rankings. Kentucky? Bye Bye. North Carolina will stay at the bottom. Colorado could stay with only 1 loss. South Florida and Kansas State are gone.

No idea how this will shake out. Any guesses???

Lessons Learned – Arizona versus Oregon

I have no doubt that the coaching staff watched the Arizona – Oregon game on Saturday and will use it as part of their pregame preparations. As hard as this is to admit, they know a lot more about the game than I do, but I’m not going to let that prevent me from summarizing my takeaway lessons.

Free Throws

The first isn’t something they can address between now and the game on Monday, but one of my rare criticisms of the UConn team is their less than stellar free throw shooting. They are so good at so many aspects of the game and I’ve never fully understood why they are not one of the nation’s leaders in this category. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more definitive example of the importance of free throw shooting. Arizona hit five of 10. Had they had six of 10 (which does not exactly qualifier as stellar), they would’ve come away with the win. Oregon was 19 of 20 in regulation, which does qualify as stellar, and had they been 18 of 20 in regulation, that would still be stellar but not good enough for the win. There was a lot going on in this game and I don’t mean to boil it down to free throw shooting, but one more free throw by Arizona or one fewer by Oregon and the result is different.

Oregon’s five losses

Do not place any emphasis on the fact that Oregon has lost five times this year. DD has already gone into this in more detail, so I will summarize — four critical players for Oregon have missed a substantial number of games during which those losses occurred. When they finally had everybody back, while still shaking off some rust, they beat the number 7 team in the nation.

Three-point shooting

Oregon managed to win while hitting only two of 11 three-pointers. They hit 38% of their three-pointers for the season so do not assume that they will shoot this poorly against UConn. Had they simply hit their average this would’ve been a comfortable win rather than a nailbiter.

Come-back

Do not miss that Arizona had a 15 point lead late in the third quarter and it wasn’t enough. In past years, some fans have been critical of UConn habit of playing hard even after the game is “over”. Geno has defended that practice, and this is a perfect example showing that an apparently comfortable lead isn’t.

Height

Oregon can play tall. For almost any team in the nation putting in a 6’ 7” player would be considered playing tall, but they can play Prince as well as Kyei at 6’ 8”. They did and it may have made the difference. (That’s without even considering Sabally at 6’ 5”)

The season stats through 12 games have some interesting results.

Consider:

1. Yesterday’s “block party” against Xavier saw 5 Huskies block a total of 15 shots. This season, opponents have only blocked a total of 29 UConn shots in all 12 games.

2. Caroline has scored 113 points in 11 games. She is 1 point behind Olivia, for 3rd place, in 100 fewer minutes.

3. Ducharme is tied with Christyn with 17 made threes, but in 3 fewer shots. In 200 fewer minutes.

4. Since giving up 69 points to Louisville, UConn has held opponents to 55 points, then 47 points and most recently, 41 points.

5. UConn has outscored opponents 230 vs 167 in the 1st period. In the 4th period, the difference is 187-186.

6. Nika Muhl has more assists (18), than points scored (16). She also has 16 fouls.

7. Paige is still the 2nd leading scorer w/ 127 pts, despite missing 6 of 12 games.

Go Huskies..!!
