Senior night Saturday and I'd like to share some Sanyia Chong and Tierney Lawlor "stuff".
I remember following Sanyia at Ossining HS. Boy, was she something. She had several games of 50+ points. Here are two videos if you want to see what I mean.
I'm so happy for her senior season. She has shown durability, smarts, skills and overall improvement from her first three seasons. I'm sure I could find many posts from many fans that had her coming off the bench this season. Now she is third in minutes per game, and might even end up second at the rate she is going. Who knows how UConn would have done this year without her. She is as important as anyone on the team in this championship run.
Thank you Saniya.
When UConn came calling, Tierney answered. I'll never forget the first time I read the story of how Lawlor and Pulido had responded to a request by the UConn team for players to walk on. Not only did she make the cut, but she has played in over 30 games in each of her first three season. I don't think she will make that number this year. It will be close. It depends on the MOV over the hopefully 11 games left in UConn's season. But you can bet she will be ready to take the court when called.
I love watching her when she does play. She is as intense as any player on the team. She is always in the right place as the right time. Yeah, her physical ability and skills don't allow her to produce points when on the court. But just watch her. Watch her defensive stance. Watch her move without the ball. She has really learned to play Geno's system. She also gives the emotional inspiration in the huddle at the start of games. Geno gave her a scholarship before her Junior season and there isn't a player more deserving.
With Lawlor and Chong on the roster, the Huskies are 143-1 with three national titles and a 102-game win streak. And they have NEVER lost a game at home. Amazing.
Senior night is always an emotional affair. And it will be wonderful to see Chong and Lawlor as the starting backcourt. You never get to see Tierney play with the starters. So, my one hope for tonight is that Tierney scores a basket in this, her senior night game. And I hope Saniya has the assist!!!

55 point game
I also remember her heading out west to play against the best of the best. She averaged 30 points and 10 assists in the three games.
