GO UCONN!!!!!

I'm not sure I could put it any better than Geno did after this tough loss.

"I couldn't be prouder of my team in how we represented ourselves out there. I think it was a gutsy, amazing performance"

As a fan, I couldn't be any prouder as well. When they came back from a 13 point deficit to tie the game at 82-82 I thought they were going to pull it out, but it just wasn't meant to be.

First let me give proper credit to Maryland. They did what they had to do to win. They hit some really clutch three pointers, especially Abbey Meyers and Bria Alexandar. Meyers worried me in this one, and she proved me right. Her 18 first half points were huge. The Huskies and mostly Griffin defended Maryland's star player Diamond Miller very well, but it was her three pointer that put the game away.

So, on to the Huskies. Turnovers again killed them. They had 22 compared to 5 for Maryland. Right awaay I'm thinking that number is closer to 12-12 if Nika was playing. And that would be the difference in the game. But you have to play the players you have available and the Huskies did just that.

Edwards was terrific in this game. She had 25 points on 12-19 shooting, grabbing 8 rebounds and handing out 7 assists. Maybe her most complete game. And in a game full of turnovers, she only had 2. This while playing all 40 minutes. This version of Edwards will be big going forward.

Griffin had another double double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Her free throw shooting remains stellar going 6-6. She hounded Miller in her 35 minutes.

Lou had a slow start. She really was kinda tentative. But she had a very good second half and she ended up with 16 points in 28 minutes. First half foul trouble was a problem as it limited her to 28 total minutes.

Ducharme had a mixed bag. Her offense looked to come around. She shot 5-11 from the field, and grabbed 7 rebounds. She had 13 points in 39 minutes. But she made some really sloppy plays that turned into 6 turnovers. She is getting there but not quite there.

In her first and maybe last start for UConn, Bettencourt played as well as can be expected. She played 29 minutes and had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. And only 3 turnovers. Overall, I'm sure Geno was very pleased with her performance.

Only two players were available off the bench and they both saw double digit minutes.

Patterson looked pretty darn good. She only played 17 minutes but was 5-7 from the field for her 10 points. She also had 4 rebounds. Nice contributions.

DeBerry played 13 minutes and continued to show some growth in her game. She missed her only shot, but she did had 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks.

Overall I was really happy with the offense when they didn't turn it over. They looked for the best shot had 21 assists on 31 basketsa. They also shot 53.4% from the field and there good free throw shooting continued with a 13-15 effort.

Now the Huskies get a week off before playing the ACC's Florida State at the Mohegan Sun Arena for the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase. As of this writting, FSU is 7-1 with a game against Presbyterian before meeting the Huskies. They had great stats, but against weak schedule. More on them later in the week.

UConn is getting a week off, so I will take a day off here and there. If there are interesting happening in WCBB, I'll write about them!!

Straight from the Dog

A pretty weak schedule of games Sunday. There were 10 Top 25 and the average margin of victory was 23.5 points.

There were a few good games.

The Battle for Oregon bragging rights was close with No. 17 Oregon winning by 8 over Oregon State.

In a Big Ten battle, No. 3 Ohio State had to battle with Michigan to finally win 74-68.

No. 11 LSU had their game against New Orleans cancelled due to Covid issues in the New Orleans program. One less cupcake for Kim to chew on.
