“I think the root was definitely just new lineups playing with one another,” Aaliyah Edwards said of the turnovers. “We had to kind of grind it out together and figure out how we can stay connected while being more aggressive and keeping our intensity. But we tried to limit the turnovers and to execute our plays.”
“We missed a lot with Nika out,” Edwards said. “I feel like her being a great facilitator for us, getting us organized and also just bringing the energy. But I think Inês did a great job helping us, running our plays and getting us what Coach wants us to do. A lot of people also did step up and make some great plays for us, great possessions. So I think that we battled it out.”
“The game did kind of turn it a little bit when Lou got her third foul,” Auriemma said. “The way Lou plays she impacts the game so many different ways. And she missed I think the whole second quarter and that was the one quarter that there was a big difference between the two teams. And you don’t have many options on the bench to replace somebody like that, so right now we’re managing it as we go along.”
“For long, long stretches of the game, it was exactly what we had hoped it would be and it played out exactly the way we wanted it to play out,” Auriemma said. “Unfortunately we just couldn’t sustain it for the entire 40 minutes. As the game wore on, I think we got a little bit worn down, but more mentally than physically. ... We made a lot of mental errors late there in the game. But at the same time, they made some big, big shots late in the game that were a big difference in the outcome. ... Big threes that went in that really were back breakers.

That's the best crowd for Maryland women's basketball since it sold out when it last played UConn at home on Dec. 29, 2016.
Brenda Frese on beating Geno Auriemma and UConn: "I'm not gonna lie, it's special. Obviously he's a Hall of Famer, the best to ever do it ... One I'll always remember."

Low-key getting secondhand embarrassment from how much celebrating I’m seeing from Maryland players and fans for beating UConn. You beat a completely depleted UConn team with only 7 players by just 7 points, you didn’t win the national championship… pic.twitter.com/d3pQYIGOey

Captain obvious here, but UConn looks exceptionally well-coached. What a smart game plan for the players they have available today to work the ball inside, but without forcing it, and not place too much play making burden on Betancourt.

Geno Auriemma: "With each day that goes by we're closer to getting them (Nika and Dorka) back. So this week really comes at a good time for us."
