Seton Hall

Seton Hall comes to Hartford on a roll. After winning their first two games, 73-39 over St. Peter's and Rutgers 75-57,  they lost their next three. They battled Princeton losing 62-58 and then lost to another Ivy League team Columbia 83-76 before losing a heartbreaker to VCU 62-61.

They then won their next 7 games.  They beat Wisconsin 83-72 and Georgia 86-80 and then won their first two Big East games against Xavier 74-55 and at the time No. 24 Marquette 82-78. The last three games on the winning streak weren't against very good teams. They beat Rider 78-40, a struggling UCF team 63-56 and in their last outing they beat Fordham 78-72.

Game Analysis

I will say it in my daily blog, but let me just say here my best wishes to good health for Geno. He will be missing this game as he is still under the weather. Quotes from Geno later tonight. Needless to say, the Huskies are in great hands with Coach Dailey and the rest of the staff.

On to the game.

Once again UConn will be facing that mini-speed demon Lauren Park-Lane. She has had great games against UConn and bad games against the Huskies. Last season she had 20 points on 5-17 shooting but did get to the foul line 10 times. In their second matchup, UConn put big-time defense on her, holding her to 1-11 shooting and 5 points. But we all know she is capable of going off at any time. She is the prototypical volume shooting scorer. She has taken 69 three points, but only hits at 28%. She is so good at getting to the free throw line. She has taken 92 and shoots them at 77%. Park-Lane is averaging 21.3 PPG and has 70 assists and only 34 turnovers.

Sydney Cooks is in her second year at the Hall and is in her Grad Student season. She started at Michigan State for two year, she played one season at Mississippi State and then on to the Pirates. At 6'4",  she is the only real height on their team and does a great job in the middle. She likes to take it outside the line and is shooting 35% on threes. She is scoring at a 15.9 PPG clip and leads the team in rebounding at 6.9 per game.

Sha'Lynn Hagans is the only other double digit scorer on the team. She is averaging 11.2 PPG and is the best three point shooter in the team going 17-32 for 53%. She also averages the second most minutes on the team and will see plenty of floor time. The 5'6" senior guard has been Park-Lanes running mate for years and they play well together.

The rest of the team are all Guard/Forward types between 5'10"-6'1. And no offense to these players, but the three players i wrote about will do 90% of the scoring. The Pirates will count on the other 5 players to defend the heck out of the Huskies. How they do will contribute to the final margin.

The Huskies are coming off a great effort against a tough FSU team. You can see how UConn tired out late. It's not easy dealing with all the injuries and then the injured players trying to get their sea-legs.

UConn matches up well with The Hall. My main concern is foul trouble for Muhl guarding Park-Lane. But if Dorka is matching up with Cooks then the Pirates have no one to guard Edwards. And I expect a bounce back game for Griffin, who struggled against FSU.

Look for Ducharme to continue her improved game and the usual solid performance from Lou.

Prediction

Seton Hall has had a solid season to date. And they might be the most experienced team the Huskies play with one grad student, five seniors and one junior in their eight player rotation.

But games are won with talent and the Huskies just have too much for the Pirates to deal with.

It will a good game for UConn heading into the break.

UConn by 25+.
