Here is the UConn/Tulsa II Pregame Report
******************************************************************************
Ok, I'll admit it. I was looking for the Top 25 matchups for this blog and noticed that FGCU was No. 22 in this weeks AP poll. FGCU? I had to look it up. Florida Gulf Coast University. After Thursday's win against Kennesaw State they are 24-2. 11-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Besides that powerhouse Kennesaw State they also play teams like Lipscomb, Stetson and South Carolina Upstate.
Their best win of the season was their first game, beating then unranked and now ranked George Washington. Their two losses are to a terrible Auburn team and to a middle of the pack Big Ten team Ohio State.
It is understandable with so many mediocre teams in the bottom of the Top 25 over the course of the season that teams that keep winning, even in weak conferences, will continue to move up the ladder.
I did a little more research on FGCU and since moving to the Atlantic Sun Conference, they have been dominant among their peers. To date, they are 127-13 in conference play from 2007 through this season. That only an average of 2 conference losses per season. And they have been in the post season (NIT or NCAA) every year.
Last year they won the conference tournament, giving them the NCAA automatic bid. They lost in the first round to Oklahoma State 61-60 in overtime in a very exciting game. I should have remembered.
If they don't win the conference tourney will they still get an At Large NCAA bid? They would have to take one from a Power 5 conference team. Doubtful. But I'm sure they believe they deserve it.
I have to give Ashley Beverly-Kelly a special shout out tonight. The Troy guard scored an amazing 46 points Thursday. She took 31 shots, hitting 16. She was 5-8 on three point shots and 9-9 on free throws. Averaging around 17 PPG, she has been on a roll the last 6 games before this big night upping that to 23 PPG over those 1/2 dozen games.
Great Job tonight Ashley!!! You might be inspiring my to come up with a Player of the Day award!!!
Ugly Game Of The Day
It's always more fun when it's one of the so called Power-5 conference team that wins this award. And Thursday, there is no doubt that the ACC's Clemson Tigers deserved the Ugly Game of the Day award.
Clemson managed to score 38 points. With these stats, I'm surprised the scored that many. They shot 28% from the field, 16% (2-12) from behind the arc, 54% on free throws, and only 3 assists and 23 turnovers. Great job Tigers!!! You win Thursday's UGGY!!
Honorable Mention
Texas State - 41 points, 20% FG, 27% three point shooting (3-11), 19 turnovers and only 3 assists
