I had a wonderful day with my little buddy Barrett!!

"Both teams are talented but I'll take Stanford if they can keep the turnovers down."

Yes, this was my prediction for the Tennessee/Stanford game. Now, Stanford did win 95-85 but they had 20 turnovers. But those turnovers didn't help Tennessee win, it helped them keep the game close. Stanford won this game because they hit their open shots and because Tennessee let them shoot so many open shots.

The Cardinal shot 55% from the field and 58% on threes. That's 14-24 from beyond the arc. HOT!!! They were led by Dijonai Carrington with 33 points and 13 rebounds.

Tennessee was led by their fabulous sophomore Evina Westbook, who had 29 points and 10 assist. The Lady Vols got basically nothing from their bench. In 50 minutes of play the 5 bench players had 5 points and 8 rebounds. Four of them were scoreless.

So, back out of the top 10 for the Lady Vols. It should be interesting to see how this team does in the SEC. It will mean everything for their seeding. They finish out their weak OOC schedule with East Tennessee State, Murray State and Belmont. Blech!

The Mississippi State/Oregon game was as entertaining as you might expect between two talented teams with some WCBB on both teams. The Ducks quacked all over the Bulldogs winning 82-74.

Sarina Ionescu didn't get her triple double but she led Oregon with 29 points and was 17-17 from the free throw line. The Ducks, who shoot 85% from the free throw line as a team on the season, were 27-28 for the game.

Anriel Howard led Mississippi State with a career high 30 points before fouling out with one minute remaining in the game. McGowan struggled in this game and Coach Vic actually sat her for much of the fourth quarter in the comeback attempt.

PART I

Crystal Dangerfield has the keys to Geno's high powered UConn offense. The offense has scored 791 points in 9 games for an average of 87.9 per game. But, the last four games have seen the Huskies score 99, 89, 98 and 99 points. That is an average of over 96 pts per game. The 89 point game was against a Notre Dame team that was only giving up 60 points/game previously. Clearly, the offense is a high octane scoring machine.

Crystal's personal stats are equally impressive. She is averaging exactly 14 points per game and already has 51 assists. Both of those stats are up from her first two seasons. Compare her #s for the past two years:

Points -
Freshman year - 188 pts
Sophomore year - 333 pts
Junior year - (9 games) 126 pts already

Assists -
Freshman year - 114 assists
Sophomore year - 142 assists
Junior year (9 games) - 51 already

UConn has 300 baskets so far this season. They have 186 assists for an assist on 62% of their baskets. Opponents have 100 fewer assists and average 35 points less per game. Crystal has been a workhorse for Geno this season. She is averaging 32.9 minutes per game, 2nd to Christyn at 33.8 per. Geno trusts Crystal to run the offense and she is responding with a record-setting year.  :D

                              PART II

Everyone likes to say the NBA is now a three-point league. Every team loads up with deadly three-point shoters and abandons the big, slow center working with their back to the basket. Maybe women's college basketball is not far behind..?  UConn is certainly an example. Consider:

1. UConn has 4 players making 40% or better on 3 point shots. (minimum 20 attempts.)

2. Christyn is tops at 46.9%, Crystal is next at 43.8%, then Lou at 41.5% and finally Megan at 40%.

3. As a team, 9 Huskies have tried a three and overall the shooting % is 40.9%.

4. Even off the bench, Kyla is 4-5 (80%) and Molly is 2-4 (50%).

What about other teams?  Notre Dame has 1 player above 40% on threes. Jackie Young is at 42.9%, but has taken only 14 attempts. Arike the Mean has taken 51 threes but only makes 27.5%. Mabrey the Complainer is at 34.5%. The ND team make rate is 29.1%.

California, UConn's next opponent has 4 players with 20 or more tries from 3 range, but none are above 40%. In fact, as a team, Cal shoots only 30% from deep. The best 3 point shooter is Kristine Anigwe at 54.5%, but only on 11 tries. Why ND and Cal don't have the better shooters shoot more is a mystery..!! :o

Baylor actually has only 1 player with more than 20 attempts. Landrum is 17-37 or 45.9%. The next most tries is Moon Ursin (great name) who is a remarkable 7-11 or 63.6%. Because of Landrum and Ursin, Baylor makes 43.2% as a team, but have tried only 81 threes in 9 games. (UConn has tried 193 threes.)

When your best 3 point shooters don't take many threes, that is a coaching mistake. But don't tell Cal or Baylor until after the UConn game.

Go Huskies..!!
