No. 10 UConn Huskies Georgetown Hoyas
90 49
I'm kinda liking the "Lather, Rinse and Repeat" mode that UConn is in right now.
Geno runs out the starting five, sprinkles liberally with three former starters off the bench and then the last 7 minutes of the game, add a dash of the end of the bench.
Lather, Rinse and Repeat.
Now, that won't always mean a 40-50 point win, but this process finally gets the team to play like a well oiled machine. The long scoring runs are so "UConn" of the past and something that has been missing this year. Until now.
It was 26-17 when the Hiuskies went on a 19-2 run to end the first half. Most of that was keyed by the defense along with the mistakes that Georgetown would make. UConn has always been a fantastic team on the fast break and this game was just exceptional.
Christyn Williams once again led the team in minutes with 34 and points with 19. She also added 5 assists. She looks so comfortable on the court the last few games.
Fudd had an off shooting day from deep, but her pull up jumper is a thing of beauty. Perfect form, and she stops on a dime. So similar to Paige in that regard. The shot is unstopable. She played 23 minutes and scored 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds and did some nice ball handling. She joined Dorka as the only two players without a turnover.
Nika Muhl is making it believable that this team can do some real damage even without Paige. She is hitting her outside shot, making great passes and playing her usual pesky defense. She played 23 minutes and was 3-5 on threes. She scored 11 points and added 4 rebounds, 4 asissts and SIX steals.
Dorka Juhasz is losing some playing time, getting on the court for only 13 minutes in this game. I'd guess she is still working her way back from her latest injury (foot?). But I love how she plays. She was 3-3 from the field and actually hit both of her free throws. Big improvement. She scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Nice stats for those limited minutes.
Edwards played 24 minutes and while her stats don't jump out at you, she played a controlled game that I'm sure Geno really liked. She had 7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
Is there a better 3 players off the bench in the country?
Evina Westbrook appears to have embraced her role. She has never looked more under control than she has since coming off the bench. She is still getting plenty of minutes, 25 in this game. And while off from the outside, she was amazing handling the ball and playing some really great defense. She scored 9 points, added 4 rebounds and 4 steals, all leading to fast break layups. She has continued to embrace her leadership role.
Olivia Nelson-Ododa is still feeling her way back after her groin injury. She did get 22 minutes in this game, and at times was effective, scoring 7 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. But she did have a stretch where the ball was like a greased pig. She ended up with 4 turnover, all in around 5 minutes. No doubt still rusty.
Talk about being all over the court. We all know the great offense that Carolina Ducharme brings to the table. And she did score 8 points in her 22 minutes. But the SIX steals really jump out at you. She is deceptively quick and uses her length to get in passing lanes and interecpt passes. She doesn't play like a freshman anymore.
How great is it to see DeBerry and Gabriel get some exteneded playing time. And little by little, they both are looking like they belong out there.
DeBerry hit another three pointer and in her 7 minutes she scored 7 points. Nice.
Gabriel only played 4 minutes but still had a basket allowing UConn to brag that all ten players scored for the second consecutive game.
It was another fun game to watch. I believe I predicted a 40+ win. 90-49 is pretty close.
The kinda sad news is that Paige probably won't be back in the regular season according to Geno. She is close but just not there yet. It will be just about 2 weeks before the Big East tournement game for the Huskies. It would be great if she is ready by then.

Everybody Eats!!
Right there with the "we will be nasty" comment when Paige comes back, this comment by Nika was just awesome. She said it when asked about her feeding DeBerry on the fast break. "Everybody eats". Ya just gotta love this kid!!

And another 2 seed goes down. AP No. 6 team Arizona lost to unranked Washington State. Make no mistake about it. This was a bad loss. The timing is really poor when you are trying to lock in a good seeding. And this is their second loss since the last reveal. How can they still be a 2 seed over UConn?
I would guess that eventually enough teams that were a 2 seed in the last reveal will have lost that they would have NO choice but to make UConn a 2 seed. Looking forward to the excuse Charlie SECreme make when UConn remains a 3 seed in Bridgeport in his cock-a-meme bracketology.

Two more upsets in the Top 25 other than Arizona. Another mediocre SEC team, No. 21 Georgia, lost to SEC bottom dwellar Auburn. The Tigers only other SEC win was against Tennessee which started the Lady Vols slide. The Bulldogs scored only 6 points in the fourth quarter to allow Auburn to pull out the win.
In a lost that doesn't help UConn's NET ranking, No. 16 Georgia Tech was embarrassed by unranked Miami 51-39. The loss was so ugly that.......
Yes, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets had their stinger removed by Miami in a really ugly 51-39 loss.
So how ugly did Georgia Tech play in this game? Well, they only scored 4 points in the first quarter and 8 in the second quarter. They played a little better in the second half but the overall stats tell the story.
The Yellow Jackets shot 28.6% from the field, 3-16 on threes, 8-13 from the free throw line and they added 22 turnovers. They were lucky to score 39 points.
This was a well earned UGGY award. Congrats Georgia Tech!!!!

Geno has finally found his best formula, this season, for winning basketball.
With Paige out, he is going with an 8 player rotation that brings Evina, Caroline and Olivia off the bench. That is quite a trio to have in reserve. In the 1st half against Georgetown, those three had 11 points, 8 steals, 4 rebounds and 1 steal. That was just the reserves. The starters, (Nika, Azzi,Dorka, CW and Aaliyah) had 34 points, 14 rebounds, another 7 steals and 10 assists. Georgetown was over matched and had as many turnovers (19) as points (19). That is never good. Combined with GT shooting 29% from the field, the Hoyas were down 26 points with little chance of making it close.
The 2nd half was no better for the Hoyas. The finished with 30 turnovers and only 17 baskets.
The 2nd half was no better for the Hoyas. The finished with 30 turnovers and only 17 baskets.
They also gave UConn 19 free throws with 20 fouls. The Huskies also were turnover prone with 21. That's 51 total turnovers between both teams. But UConn had 33 baskets, 22 assists, 21 steals and 16-19 shooting from the charity stripe. This 8 player rotation with former starters coming in as reserves is something to watch for.
Once again, UConn played 10 and everyone scored. The point totals were 19, 12, 11, 9, 8, 8, 7, 7, 7, and 2. Quite balanced.
Go Huskies..!!

David, The only reason Olivia is not starting is because she coming off injury. Look for her to return to starting by tournament time if not sooner. Look for Edwards to be first off the bench to spell her and Dorka.
