GO UCONN!!!!!

I agree with some posters that this should be a forfeit. Butler could have left earlier if they were smart enough to look at the weather forecast.

Phil will have some info on "number of games needed" in the Friday night blog.

Selection Committee
First Reveal 1-4 Seeds

Here are the Original Top 16 and their records since the seedings came out.

1 South Carolina 3-0
2 Stanford 2-0
3 NC State 2-1
4 Tennessee 1-2
5 Louisville 3-0
6 Indiana 1-1
7 Texas 0-1
8 Arizona 0-1
9 Michigan 2-0
10 Iowa State 2-0
11 UConn 2-0
12 LSU 1-1
13 Baylor 1-1
14 Oregon 4-0
15 Georgia 2-0
16 Kansas State 1-1

It should be interesting to see how the Committee seeds these teams in the next release. It's more complicated than "you lose you move" kind of thinking. But I'm pretty sure if UConn can beat Tennessee on Sunday, the Huskies should move up to a 2 seed. And Tennessee down to a 4 seed. We shall see.

Straight from the Dog

I posted an instagram video with some great highlights from the Creighton game. If you watch it, check out Paige in this video. It isn't much but I didn't see any limp. Her brace is smaller. She is getting close.

UConn's opponent Sunday had three games against  teams prior to meeting the Huskies and they went 1-2 with the win coming in overtime against Arkansas when one of the Razorback's best players got injured when Arkansas was up 12. They lost to cellar dweller Auburn on Sunday by ten points and then middle of the pack Florida 84-59 in a game that Florida dominated and Tennessee sulked away like a beaten Vol.

Ok....lose a game. It happens. But this Tennessee basically gave up, including their coach. She took their best player out with 3 fouls and it was still kinda in reach. Quitter.  It was tough to watch. Ok....it wasn't tough to watch. I really enjoyed it. The Lady Vols were just awful.

Can they recover some semblance of order in their play before Sunday?

I'll have more in my UConn/Tennessee Pregame Report that will be published on Saturday. I have a very busy day Saturday so it could be out very late.

An interesting take from the Orange Idiots.

" the difference is Tamari Key  is allowed to get beat up and fouls aren't called and when even stares hard at a person she is called. ONO gets a way with a lot of holding, grabbing and pushing and refs seem to ignore it. It happened against Morrow and the same happened the other day against Providence. I expect Tamari Key to have to sit and ONO is able to stuff the stat sheet because the refs will cater to Geno in Uconn."

I hope that happens Sunday...lol. But Nelson-Ododa getting away with fouling? Insane.

I never though a one word post would make me laugh like it did when I read it. It was in response to guards they could go after in the transfer portal. One particularly dumb Tennessee poster replied----

"Fudd"

Hahahahahahahaha.

Oklahoma

Early on Wednesday night, I began to lose hope that Oklahoma could knock off Baylor.

On paper, it certainly looked plausible. Baylor was a five-point favorite, partly because they were playing on their court, so an upset wouldn’t even be considered a major upset. However, as the game started, Baylor pulled out to a nine point lead at the end of the first quarter, and began extending that lead in the second quarter. Based on watching the UConn game earlier in the evening, one shouldn’t give up hope based on the early results, but I was concerned.

Oklahoma began chipping away late in the second quarter and tied up the game going into halftime. Maybe there’s hope after all. The third quarter was very tight, neither team had more than a three point lead at any point, yet it was troubling that it was more apt to be small lead by Baylor than Oklahoma.

The fourth quarter opened with the sooners holding a slim one-point lead, but they didn’t score for over three minutes. Baylor didn’t take complete advantage, and Oklahoma kept it close. As the quarter is coming to a close, the Baylor lead was never insurmountable but they seemed in control. Baylor was up by six with four minutes to go, and still up by four with two minutes left in the game.

Time was running out. Baylor missed a shot, got the rebound, and missed again, then Oklahoma scored to cut the lead to 2. Baylor missed two more shots, then Madi Williams was fouled and hit two free throws to tie it up. Under a minute to go, and Baylor has the ball. Queen Egbo was fouled but only made one of two. Oklahoma missed two attempts to take the lead, then Baylor has the ball, and the lead, and only 41 seconds to go. However, Baylor turns it over, and Liz Scott makes a layup with six seconds to go to take the lead. Baylor misses a layup at the buzzer, and Oklahoma comes away with a big win on the road.

In addition to being a fun game to watch, it has seeding applications, as Baylor was hot on the heels of UConn for a three seed. I’m still hoping that UConn can earn a two seed, but we don’t need someone catching us from behind.

UConn

I totally get that the main storyline will be UConn falling behind by double digits early, then recovering and winning.

That said, I want to focus on a different aspect. Creighton is a good team, currently penciled in for a ten seed, and plays with solid fundamentals. Massey picked UConn to win, but by only seven points. Yet despite digging themselves a double-digit hole, UConn went on to win by 20 points. The first few minutes were painful, but then the team buckled down, and reminded me of some games of old.

Remember how a highly touted team would come in to play UConn and would go away not just with the loss, but with an unimpressive performance. Geno became famous for saying, “they are not as bad as we made them look”. I’m not going to pretend this game was exactly in the same league, but there were definite hints of some of those performances. Creighton looked out of sorts, and that’s not because they’re a bad team, but because UConn made them look bad. Early on they couldn’t miss, later on they had trouble hitting even easy layups, and I’m convinced that’s because UConn ratcheted up its defense and made it difficult to play.

Note that this win moved UConn up from 8 to 6 in Massey ratings. That’s an impressive movement this late in the season.

Very nice come from behind victory over a tough Creighton team last night. The final score was 76-56, but UConn dominated the last 23 minutes by scoring 56 points and giving up only 24.

Other great stats include:

1. 11-11 from the free throw line. 1st perfect game this year from the charity stripe.
2. Liv was 5-5 from the free throw line, and is 14-19 or 74% in her last 5 games.
3. UConn had 22 assists on 29 baskets.
4. In their last 3 games, the Huskies have shot 69.2%, 61.5% and 84.6% in the 4th quarter, scoring 72 points.
5. Three point shooting of 7-17 is 41.2%.
6. Defense held CU to 12-40 or 30% in the final three periods.
7. Five Huskies scored 10 or more points vs CU having just 1 player in double figures.

Liv had another great game. Her 5th double double included 17 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists.

Go Huskies..!!
