GO UCONN!!!!!

WOW.....what huge news. Paige has been cleared by her doctors today for games. Yes, we will likely see her play a few minutes Friday night against St. John's. How many minutes? I'd say more than 10 and less than 20. The toughest part for her will be to get into game shape. You can only do so much cardio. It's just not enough to get you ready for extended minutes.

I wish I was going to this game and hear the crowd when Paige hits the scorer's table to check in. It will be insane!!!

I wrote the game preview beloew before the news about Paige playing. I don't think it will change anything other than UConn finally has all their players available. 12 healthy players and 10 in the rotation. Well, as long as Dorka can play through her fat lip.

And in case you forgot what they were missing
Here is 30 minutes of Paige Bueckers Highlights

Up next is St. John’s, who UConn beat in Queens back on 1/23. They were in the basement of the Big East at 1-5 when they met last time but the Johnny's have gone 6-5 in conference play since that game. However, their wins were against Xavier twice, Georgetown twice, Providence and Butler. All those teams are at the bottom of the conference. They lost to Villanova, Creighton, DePaul, Marquette since the UConn game. All the top teams in the league.

The Red Storm are a high scoring team averaging 73.8 PPG. They also give up 72.9 PPG. Pretty bad.

Here is some updated stats along with info from my first preview.

This season they added No. 3 Danielle Patterson, a 6'2" forward, a grad student from Indiana. She has moved into the starting lineup. She averages 9.9 PPG and 6.7 RPG.

Their leading scorer No. 2 Lielani Correa, a 6' junior guard. She is scoring 17.8 PPG.

No. 30 Kadaja Bailey is a 6' senior guard and the second leading scorer at 13.8 PPG.

No. 01 Unique Drake (still a great name) a 5'7" junior guard is a the third starter and scores at 9.6 PPG.

The returning "Rayven" is No. 20 Miss Peeples, a 6'3" senior forward, who has just returned to play 4 games in January after playing only 2 games before that. She is averaging 9.1 PPG and 9.6 RPG.

Off the bench is No. 13 Danielle Cosgrove, a 6'4" senior forward and No. 22 Camree Clegg, a 5'5" guard Grad student from Clemson. Clegg leads the team in assists with 96.

UConn didn't win by the big margin I thought they would but an 18 point win on the road against St. John's was a great win. Especially with only 6 available players and really only two true guards. Remember those days

It was another solid performance for this short handed team. There was one shot of the bench with Williams, Bueckers and Fudd sitting there and like Geno said, that is 45 points on the bench.

Ducharme scored a career 28 points on 13-22 shooting. Still a little off from long range, she only went 2-8 on threes. She played all 40 minutes.

Oliva Nelson-Ododa had a double double. It was not her usualy points and rebounds, it was 18 rebounds and 10 assists. Talk about a point-forward. She is the best passer outside of Paige on the team. And maybe the best passing big-man in the country. Yes, she is that good. She also added 2 blocks, but I think they missed a few in the box score. I counted at least 4.

Dorka Juhasz had a nice game as well. In her 28 minutes, she scored 16 points and at one point hit a clutch three pointer with only 2 seconds left on the shot clock. She was one rebounds short of a double double with nine.

The two available guards played very well in this game.

Nika Muhl looked to be in great game shape and 100% healthy as she played 40 minutes again. She had 9 points, 3 assists and 4 steals. The only weak spot was her 4 turnovers.

Evina Westbrook played 39 minutes and scored 11 points. She didn't shoot great, but did go 2-5 on threes. She added 3 assists but again, not great with 3 turnovers.

The only player off the bench in this game, Aaliyah Edwards was solid in her 21 minutes. She scored 8 points on 4-7 shooting and had 2 blocks. She does have to do a better job finishing down low. She should have been 7-7.

UConn will have everyone available including Paige. Amazing.

Maybe for a change UConn will start out of the gate a little faster in this game? It has to happen eventually. Even with a slow start I expect UConn to score around 20 more points than last time. And that means a big win.

UConn by 35+.

There were 17 Top 25 teams in action Thursday night. The odd thing about that is that not one of them were playing another ranked team. So were there any upsets? Of course!!

There was one "almost" upset. No. 25 Georgia's Jenna Staiti made a traditional  three point  play with 21 seconds left to win it for the Bulldogs.

Shea Ralph's Vanderbilt team upset No. 15 Florida 63-59. A great win for Vandie and Shea. She is going to do wonders for that program.

No. 22 Georgia Tech lost again, this time to unranked Florida State in overtime. The Yellow Jackets have really struggled at the end of the regular season. They have not lost 5 of their last 6 games and should be out of the top 25 come Monday.

And lastly, No. 12 Arizona and currently a No. 2 seed according to Charlie SECreme lost at home to unranked UCLA in a game that has big seeding implications. They not only lost but the Wildcats were never close in this game losing 64-46. Just a terrible loss for Arizona.

UConn - 2 seed - Bridgeport. PERIOD!

David in Naples posted this on a message board and suggested I share it.

Azzi Fudd has played in 14 UConn games and started 7. Her stats are pretty impressive...  8-)

1. Minutes = 380 and 1/2 or 27.2 per game
2. Points = 178
3. Shooting Inside 3 pt range = 53.4% (31-58)
4. 3 point shooting = 45.5% (35-77)
5. Free throw % = 92% (10-11)
6. Fouls & turnovers = 14 and 14
7. Assists & steals = 13 and 13
8. Blocked shots = 10 (tied for 4th on team)
9. Rebounds = 41
10. High point games = 29, 25, 24, and 15 points.

She is everything she was said to be...!!

With the victory over Marquette last night, UConn kept alive the streak of 20+ win seasons at 29 consecutive years. In the last 28 years, the Huskies have also reached at least 28 wins.

Here is the tally of wins in a season:

40 wins = 2013-14
39 wins = 2001-02, 2008-09, 2009-10,
38 wins = 2014-15
37 wins = 2002-03
36 wins = 1999-2000, 2007-08, 2010-11, 2016-17, 2017-18
35 wins = 1994-95, 2012-13, 2018-19

In the last two seasons, COvid has impacted the number of games played. UConn won 29 games in 2019-20 and 28 in 2020-21. Their record those two seasons was 29-3 and 28-2. In the last 8 seasons, Geno has won at least 35 games every year.  Truly remarkable..!!

Go Huskies..!!
