GO UCONN!!!!!

*************************************************

UConn women's basketball has announced that they will be playing on Wednesday against St. John's.

They needed one of Fudd (knee), Edwards (foot/ankle), Patterson (undisclosed), and Ducharme (concussion protocal) available with "no limitations" for the game. UConn has not announced which one or more than one will be playing.

If I had to guess, it would be in this order. Edwards, Patterson, Ducharme and Fudd.

Althought all could be ready to play but only one has to have "no limitations".

I'm so happy they can play. More for them than for the fans. I can only imagine how frustrated they are about this season.

Straight from the Dog

Without playing a game on Sunday, UConn still moved up from No. 5 to No. 4 in the AP Poll.

They came close to moving to No. 2 as Stanford and Ohio State were in close games that could have easliy been loses for those two teams.

Rankings really don't mean much, but it's fun to watch. It's just bragging rights.

UConn has done an amazing job considering the roster issues. It would be easy for them to get down on themselves, but this is a tight group!

Starting with preseason they were ranked 6, 5, 3, 3, 6, 9, 9, 8, 5, 4.

You can probably track those rankings with UConn injuries...along with other teams losses.

Really bad news for Iowa State.  A great player. I hate ACL injuries.

Conference rules regarding rescheduling

We all know that the DePaul game was postponed, hopefully to be rescheduled, because of not having seven scholarship players available.

However, I haven’t seen a comprehensive article talking about conference rules.

ESPN had a comprehensive timeline of “postponements, return to play rules and cancellations” back in the fall of 2020.

Postponements, return to play rules and cancellations

However, that article understandably focused on rules arising from Covid.

The Kansas City Star had a brief article summarizing forfeit policies for men’s and women’s basketball in the SEC, but again this was focused on Covid.

The Boston Globe and Hartford Courant had articles about the recent decision to postpone the DePaul game.

While helpful, those articles leave a lot of questions unanswered. It’s possible a more serious Internet search would find some answers, but I see value in some enterprising journalist doing a write up.

My questions:

1. It seems plausible that the Big East conference rule acquiring seven scholarship players was spurred by Covid issues, but I haven’t found definitive evidence confirming whether these rules existed pre-Covid, or develop more recently

2. Does every conference have its own set of rules?

3. Wouldn’t it be useful to provide a summary of the rules of the various conferences? Did one conference develop a set of rules and all other conferences simply followed suit or were those rules developed independently?

4. If the rules are conference based, what are the rules related to out of conference games?

5. David Benedict clearly said the rule requires seven scholarship players available to play, but he expanded on this point suggesting they needed to be able to play 30 minutes or more. Is that statement written in the rules or is that his interpretation of the written rules?

6. Does making up a conference game trump an out of conference game? In other words, if the only way to make up a conference game requires canceling an out of conference game is that an option? Is a related point can a conference impose a rule that affects schools out of conference schedule?

7. Who makes the decision? I’m guessing that it is not in the hands of the two schools, but one or both schools contact the conference who makes the decision. Is that correct?

It is my understanding that these rules are conference rules which supersede NCAA rules. My understanding of the NCAA rules is that a minimum of five players must be available at the start of the game, but not necessarily at the end of the game. I believe there was a game played in which four of the five available starters fouled out before the end of the game. Amazingly, the one remaining player missed a three pointer which would have given the shorthanded team the win.
