Seton Hall Season to Date

After winning their first two games, 73-39 over St. Peter's and Rutgers 75-57,  they lost their next three. They battled Princeton losing 62-58 and then lost to another Ivy League team Columbia 83-76 before losing a heartbreaker to VCU 62-61.

They then won their next 7 games.  They beat Wisconsin 83-72 and Georgia 86-80 and then won their first two Big East games against Xavier 74-55 and at the time No. 24 Marquette 82-78. The last three games on the winning streak weren't against very good teams. They beat Rider 78-40, a struggling UCF team 63-56 and in their last outing they beat Fordham 78-72.

They lost to UConn in the game after the Fordham win, but then won their next four games beating Georgetown 72-62, Butler 79-45, St. John's 72-51 and Providence 76-60 before losing big to Creighton 75-53

 Game Analysis

Once again UConn will be facing that mini-speed demon Lauren Park-Lane. She has had great games against UConn and bad games against the Huskies. Last season she had 20 points on 5-17 shooting but did get to the foul line 10 times. In their second matchup, UConn put big-time defense on her, holding her to 1-11 shooting and 5 points. And in the first matchup this year, she scored 17 points, but it was on 5-21 shooting and 3-12 on threes. But we all know she is capable of going off at any time. She is the prototypical volume shooting scorer. She has taken 103 three points, but only hits at 29%. She is so good at getting to the free throw line. She has taken 108 and shoots them at 77%. Park-Lane is averaging 20.6 PPG and has 101 assists and only 44 turnovers.

Sydney Cooks is in her second year at the Hall and is in her Grad Student season. She started at Michigan State for two year, she played one season at Mississippi State and then on to the Pirates. At 6'4",  she is the only real height on their team and does a great job in the middle. She likes to take it outside the line and is shooting 39.2% on threes. She is scoring at a 15.7 PPG clip and leads the team in rebounding at 7 per game. She was the leading scorer in the first matchup this season with 18 points going 8-15 from the field. But she only had 3 rebounds.

Sha'Lynn Hagans is close to being a  double digit scorer. She is averaging 9.9 PPG and is the best three point shooter in the team going 20-43 for 46.5%. She also averages the second most minutes on the team and will see plenty of floor time. The 5'6" senior guard has been Park-Lanes running mate for years and they play well together.

The rest of the team are all Guard/Forward types between 5'10"-6'1. And no offense to these players, but the three players i wrote about will do 90% of the scoring. The Pirates will count on the other 5 players to defend the heck out of the Huskies. How they do will contribute to the final margin. In the first match up Jala Jordan hit 3-5 threes for 9 points. I'm sure UConn will remember that and guard her a little more tightly. And Kae Satterfield score 9 points and got the the line 6 times. The Hall will need her to do more of that.

The Huskies are coming off a great effort a tough St. John's team. Finally getting Fudd back made such a big difference.

UConn matches up well with The Hall. My main concern in the first game was foul trouble for Muhl guarding Park-Lane. That didn't happen. And Nika had 11 assists. Dorka will match up with Cooks and I'm sure she will want to do better defensively this game. And score more than the ten points she managed. The Pirates clearl have no one to guard Edwards who scored 23 points. Look for a similar result in this game. And I expect an offensive bounce back game for Griffin, who struggled to score against St. John's. She had 13 points in the first match up this year.

There were 6 double digit scorers in the first game and Ducharme came off the bench for 16 points going 4-6 on threes. She probably won't be playing this game and if she is it will be limited minutes. But Fudd didn't play in the first matchup so look for Azzi to produce at that level and maybe more. As usual Lou had an efficient game with 14 points on 6-10 shooting.

Even Bettencourt contributed with 4 assists. Love it!

The issue in this game was the same as the trend this season. They had 22 turnovers, and they were spread out between 8 players. DeBerry in her 5 minutes was the only player with no turnovers. No one had more than 4 but three players had that many. I'd look for that to be lower.

UConn had a 60/50/90 game. Incredible shooting. 60.3% from the field, 52.4% on threes and 91.7% from the free throw line. That will be tough to duplicate.

Final Prediction

Seton Hall has had a solid season to date. They are third in the conference at 6-2 losing only to UConn and Creighton. And they are one of the most experienced team the Huskies play with one grad student, five seniors and one junior in their eight player rotation.

But games are won with talent and the Huskies just have too much for the Pirates to deal with as the first match up showed.

I predicted a 25 point win last time and was right on. This is a tough prediction. The game is now on the road, but UConn has Fudd back. And Seton Hall is coming off a terrible game in losing by 20 to Creighton. Hmmm......

I was good with the prediction in the first game, so let's just adjust for the home game for Seton Hall.

UConn by 20+.

GO UCONN!!!
