More fun times around the pool with the dogs.

It's always a fun night to see where UConn goes and who they are playing. However, in this weird Covid tournament, UConn is going to the same place as everyone else. Only "who" they are playing is what we will find out.
We know they will be either the top No. 1 seed or the second best No. 1 seed. I'm not sure that the brackets will make much difference this year. I don't think there is a team that UConn can't beat in this tournament. And I don't think there are but a couple of teams that can beat UConn.
I'm not into making bracket predictions. I just like watching the show and the reactions from the players.
So, more to discuss in Monday's blog. I need my rest. Once the tournament starts I have plenty to blog about.

Free throws are the most unique shot in basketball. They are always from the same distance, there is no defense to impact the shot and the shooter has plenty of time to set himself or herself before shooting. Why then, are so many free throws missed? UConn’s opponents have missed 82 free throws and only made 142. That is a miss rate of 37%..!
UConn has done better, but still missed 29% of their 372 tries. However, that is almost 150 more attempts than opponents have shot. By far the best free throw shooter on the Huskies is Paige at 83.6%.But, the most improved is Aubrey. She went from 60% last season to 75% this year. Proof that practice makes better..!

Boom and bust
One of the potential story lines at tonight's Tournament Selection is whether Notre Dame will earn an invitation to the tournament. They are presently projected to just miss. If that happens, it will mean they fail to qualify just three years after winning the national championship. I thought I would look at how other national championship winners fared in subsequent years — these results will still be true whether or not Notre Dame receives an invitation.
The gap would not set a record.
Old Dominion won the national championship in 1985 and failed to qualify the very next year. It is worth noting that in 1986, only 40 teams were selected.
North Carolina also holds the dubious distinction of a short gap between national championship and failing to qualify, winning the national championship in 1994 and failing to make the field in 1996.
Maryland won the national championship in 2006 than failed to qualify in 2010. Southern Cal won in 1984 then missed the tournament in 1989. Texas was the winner in 1986 and miss the tournament in 1995. Purdue wanted all in 1999 then failed to make the tournament in 2010. Texas Tech was the national winner in 1993 and missed the tournament in 2006. Louisiana Tech was the overall winner in 1988 and returned to the tournament 18 consecutive times before failing to make the tournament in 2007.
At the other end of the spectrum, six teams:
- Tennessee
- Stanford
- UConn
- Baylor
- Texas A&M
- South Carolina
won a national championship and have never missed a subsequent tournament.
