UCONN - St. Johns
Player of the Game - Morgan Tuck
Morgan showed off all her offensive skills today. Her post moves and footwork was terrific. And I loved that she continued to take the 3 pointer. It will keep teams honest. 23 points was really nice but her 4 assists are what makes me happy. She really is a complete player.
UConn had a difficult offensive game against a very tough St. John's defense that is one of the better ones UConn will face this season. They were held to almost 20 points below their average and they only shot 47% for the game.
Besides Tuck, Breanna Stewart had a terrific game with 18 points, 11 rebounds a 6 blocks. She was a force protecting the basket. While she struggled with her outside shot, she certainly didn't let that impact the rest of her game.
Moriah Jefferson had another great game with 14 first half points and 16 total along with 6 assists and only 1 TO. She is one tough cookie going to the basket, showing her ability to absorb the defenders hit and still finish. Just a few weeks ago she was shooting around 43% from the field and 31% on 3's and now she is shooting 54% and 45%. What a turnaround!!
I'm sure Geno, while saying he was happy with the second half effort, he was not happy with the rest of the team. KML is still struggling, Nurse had her worst game of the season and it looked like Geno didn't trust anyone else against the tough SJU defense. Chong and Williams didn't see much time in this game, but you can expect them to get plenty of minutes along with Ekmark in the weak AAC schedule. Look for a great link in the UConn area about Chong.
Overall, an ugly game. Not unexpected. But it was never in doubt and we will see them continue to work on their weaknesses in preparation for the next tough game against South Carolina.
