UConn hammered Tulsa (not Tulane!!!) tonight 98-60. And it could have been MUCH worse.
UConn's starting rotation was able to do whatever they wanted in the first half. Geno had to be thrilled with the offensive execution. They assisted on a great number of their baskets, they limited their turnovers and they hit a very high percentage of their shots, including 3 pointers.
The second half started like the first half, with UConn starting strong with a 19-4 run before Tulsa called a time out. In his usual way of helping the conference Geno pulled all the starters except for Nurse and played the end of the bench. The 80-32 lead that was built by the starters ended with a 28-18 run by Tulsa against the bench players.
Now, I'm sure Geno expects more, but the reality of that last 15 minutes is you had players that rarely get time on the floor together at the same time. And it showed. I'm not sure how much more you can expect. Does it mean anything? Not really. But I'm sure it will be fodder for the message board world. After all, we can't have a game without something to piss and moan about.
To me, it's hard to complain about anything when you have the following stats.
UConn shot 64.5% from the field.
UConn shot 59% on 3's.
UConn had 28 assists.
UConn had 9 blocks.
UConn's starters had only 4 TO's to go with 20 assists.
Nurse had 15 points, 4 assists and only 1 TO and shot 5-7 from the field and 3-3 on three's. She looked more like the Nurse we saw for most of the season before a recent mini-slump. Did anyone think she would be shooting 46% on three's this time in the season?
Jefferson had 22 points on 7-8 shooting and 4-4 on three's. She now leads the team in 3 point shooting percentage at 50%. She also had 4 assists and ZERO TO's.
Tuck had 21 points on 10-12 shooting. She had 2 assists and ZERO TO's. The TO's are great because she had been struggling with that recently. Can anyone say AA???
Stewart too the night off from shooting. But she went 3-3 from the field and had a career high 8 assists and only 2 TO's. Also big as she had been sloppy with the ball the last few games. Either she is 6'11" or the defender is only 5' tall.
KML tied Taurasi for career three point shots made. It was clear from the very first play that Geno was intent on getting her open looks. She only went 3-8, but she looked great shooting them. Geno continues to comment on her becoming a complete player.
Stokes had a block party with seven bringing her to 53 in 14 games. Great job!!
As weak as the bench looked the last 15 minutes of the game, when they were interspersed with the starters, they had some great moments.
Gabby Williams had a career high 15 points and also had 9 rebounds, many that looked like she was above the rim. What a great athlete. UConn fans are going to enjoy watching her improve over this year and for her career. The picture above shows clearly that she can fly. I believe she was still going up.
Let's not forget the nice performance by Ekmark, going 2-3 on three point shots, with 3 assists and only 1 TO in 19 minutes. I know that some think her lack of athleticism is an issue, but she is a GREAT spot up shooter and that will be her role this year.
So, while some might complain, this was a great game for the starters, and guess what. They are the ones that will be the reason UConn wins a championship. It's looking really good.

Ugly Game of the night
More like ugly team. Texas Tech scored only 35 points tonight against Oklahoma State. They actually weren't horrid on 3 point shots, going 6-15. But all that means is if they were 10 for 43 overall, they were only 4-28 on 2 point shots. UGLY.
Not only did they miss a ton of shots, they only had THREE offensive rebounds. You'd think a few more would just fall into their laps.
Congrats Texas Tech for shooting like an SEC team.
