Straight from the Dog
So, what games on Friday will the Dogster be tuning in to?
The 7 vs 10 games are primed for upsets and 10 seed South Dakota has the game to beat 7 seed Ole Miss. The Coyotes will struggle with Shakira Austin, the Rebels 6'5" center, but South Dakota is a much better shooting team. Ole Miss is a typical SEC team, shooting 42% from the field and 27% on threes. The question is always are they a lousy shooting team or is the SEC a great defensive conference? I'll go with the former. South Dakota has a good chance here.
In another 7 vs 10 game, Creighton gets a chance to show that the Big East is not as bad as DePaul played Wednesday night in their play-in game. 7 seed Colorado hasn't seen a team like Creighton before. As UConn fans know, the Bluejays love to shoot that three pointer. Creighton is ranked third nationally in 3-pointers made per game (10.3) and they are 11th in the country in 3-point percentage (36.8) and total field goal percentage (45.8). And while Colorado is ranked 19th in steals per game, Creighton is FIRST in the country in assist/turnover ratio. I like the Bluejay's chances in this game.
This could be a big upset. 5th seed Virginia Tech takes on 12th seed Florida Gulf Coast. This game will be so similar to the one I just described. FGCU is a big three point shooting team, and all it takes is a hot night to take out a higher seed. They bring a distinctive style into this tournament, with nobody taller than 6-foot-1. Every player on the roster is listed as a guard — and only Maddie Antenucci is listed as a “guard/forward” on the team’s website. The Eagles lead the nation in 3-point attempts with 1,120, more than anyone else by 200 shots! This will be a fun game to watch.
Play in team 11 seed Dayton, coming off a blowout win over DePaul, will ssee if they can continue their hot shooting against 6 seeded Georgia. Doubtful. But I'll still be rooting for the Flyers over any SEC team.

Does this make Parker an Orange Idiot??
I have to admit, she looks really good. And to know how much it would bother her if UConn won makes me root for the Huksies even harder!!!

UConn's first NCAA tournament opponent is Mercer University. The Bears played 29 games this season vs the Huskies 30 games. Their 23-6 record is as misleading as UConn's 25-5 mark. Mercer started the season 3-3 and finished the season on a 12-0 winning streak. Doggy will no doubt review the team more completely, but stats that jump out are as follows:
1. Fouls - 474 fouls vs 407 for UConn.
2. Three players started all 29 games. One started 23 and another 18.
3. Only 18% of their shots were 3 point attempts.
4. Mercer was outrebounded 1,104 vs 1,070.
5. The top 3 players scored 1,146 points or 60.4% of the total.
6. UConn has held 6 of their last 8 opponents to 40 or fewer points.
7. UConn's last 1st round loss in the NCAA tournament was in 1992-93.
Go Huskies..!!
