GO UCONN!!!!!

****************************************************

I'm sitting on shpilkas waiting for this game. I have a good feeling, but North Carolina State is a very good team and capable of taking down the Huskies.

One thing I mentioned in my UConn/NC State Pre Game Report was the matchup between Elissa Cunane and Olivia Nelson-Ododa.

While Cunane was second team all-american, I personally feel that Olivia is her match. The stats bare that out.

Cunane scores more, but she takes more shots and is the focal point of the NC State offense. Olivia is a piece to the puzzle and doesn't shoot as often. The rest of the stats? I like what ONO has done. Cunane listed first. I left off three point percentage. It's just a not significant number.

13.6 vs 9.5 PPG
7.6 vs 7.6 RPG
52.7 vs 60.2 FG%
83.2 vs 69.0 FT%
44 vs 109 assists
58 vs 63 turnovers
30 vs 54 blocks
26 vs 37 steals

Cunane has played 77 more minutes.

So, let's not pretend there is some big advantage in the center position.

GO OLIVIA!!!

Well, that was ugly. 10 seed Creighton had no answer for the size and quickness of 1 seed South Carolina in losing 80-50. Boston was once again "unstoppable" in the paint and Henderson his a couple of early three points but I was just really impressed with the Gamecock perimeter defense. They rarely gave up open shots. The Blue Jays still managed to hit a decent percentage, but they missed several "bunnies" and that seemed to take the wind out of their sails.

I'm happy that Boston's double double streak is officially over. As you know, I believe it was over several games ago when she had a bogus rebound to continue the streak. So now it's for real.

Congrats to Creighton on their great tournament run and good for South Carolina to get back to the Final Four. They are probably still the odds on favorites.

The game between 2 seed Texas and 1 seed Stanford was a tough defensive battle. The refs were letting a lot of rough play go. It seems to be the theme of this tournament.

The first half ended with Stanford leading 30-27. Would one of these teams reach 60?

Stanford took control in the second half, extending their lead to 7 points early in the fourth quarter. But Texas wouldn't go away and they closed to 50-48 with 3:35 left in the game. But they couldn't get that big basket and Stanford closed it out at the foul line, heading to the Final Foul with the 59-50 win.

I don't know if Texas lost the game at the foul line, but it sure didn't help. The Longhorns were 11-20 and Stanford was 18-22.

Haley Jones led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds. What a great player. And a match up nightmare.

Tennessee loses and the fans attack UConn, Paige and Geno. What a disgusting group of people.

"So annoying. Have to block a Bueckers fan page created by a 12yo girl every 5 seconds on Instagram. Can’t even stand to see her face."

"Refs protecting Bueckers. Got away with a body foul and then literally ran with the ball five steps. She gets 10 fouls a game or more."

"Geno Auriemma looks flushed by the Indians buzzer beating 3! Halftime 37-33 UCANT leading. He needs a enema"

"Refs are really helping UCONN."

"If i was on Indianas team i would grab Paige by the hair and sling her across the court. She is so freaking cocky."

The also call Geno an alcoholic and wino, and a few other choice words.

Pathetic.

Records watch update

Opening games

Opening-round wins may be routine for UConn and other teams, but it wasn’t just another opening-round win, it’s the 28th consecutive opening-round win. While many teams have opening-round wins and a small handful have a number in a row, nobody else has 28 in a row. This win surpassed the old record held by Tennessee with 27 consecutive opening-round games.

Sweet Sixteen

Not only did UConn set the new record for consecutive opening-round games, they won their first two games to make it to the Sweet 16 for the 28th consecutive year. That breaks a record previously held by Tennessee.

Tournament wins

Coming into the tournament, the record for most tournament wins had Tennessee in first place and UConn in second:

• 126—Tennessee, 1982-2021

• 125—UConn, 1989-2021

See page 20 of NCAA Records
Tennessee won their first-round game relatively easily, then just barely managed to eke out a victory in the second round, giving them 128 NCAA tournament wins.

UConn won their first game easily, struggled a bit with UCF but prevailed, then beat Indiana to give them three victories so far in this tournament, for 128 NCAA tournament wins, tied for first place.

All time winning percentage

A third stat isn’t technically a record, but it may be interesting to watch. If you look at the all-time winning percentage (minimum 350 victories), the overall leader is FGCU, with 519 wins, and 98 losses for a .841 winning percentage. That’s due to Karl Smesko. (I predict a major team will scoop him up someday, and the FGCU percentage will return to earth, but maybe he stays there forever and cements this record.)

See page 45 of NCAA Records
In second and third place are, you guessed it, Tennessee and UConn.

Tennessee had 1401 wins with 351 losses for a stellar 79.9% winning percentage.

They ended this season with 25 wins and nine losses, leaving them with a winning percentage of 79.84%

UConn came into the season with 1210 wins and 306 losses for a winning percentage of 79.8% (that includes the pre-Geno record of 52 – 88 between 1974 and 1985.)

At present, their record this year is 28 and 5, giving them an all-time winning percentage of 79.9%.

One UConn “fan” commented that the Huskies “only played 4 minutes of good basketball” against Indiana. He meant the first 4 minutes of the 3rd period when UConn went on a 16-0 run and put the game away. Is that true? Not really & here’s why.

UConn started slow (3 turnovers in first 4 possessions). As a result, Indiana had a 6 point lead at the 6:18 mark of that 1st period. By the 6:15 mark of the 3rd period, the Huskies were up by 20 points. So for 6:15 of the first period, 10 minutes of the 2nd period and 3:45 minutes of the 3rd period, UConn out scored the Hoosiers by 26 points. That comes out to 20 minutes of great play, not 4 minutes.

In addition, Indiana reduced the lead to 11 points with 6:01 minutes left in the game. The score was 61-50, UConn. Over the last 6 minutes, the Huskies scored 14 points to just 8 for Indiana. 11 point lead ends up a 17 point victory. Another great 6 minutes.

Except for the first 6 minutes, UConn played very very well the whole game. The 16-0 run to start the 2nd half was vintage UConn. Only an idiot would fault the Huskies effort and play in this game.

Go Huskies..!
