Going into the weekend here are our standings.
Huskymaniac and JBB1985 are tied for first with 500 points.
Magic is along in second with 490 points.
JBB2985's second entry and Rukia are tied for third with 480 points.
Phil, DoggyDaddy and ESPNFAN are tied for fourth with 470 points.
It's a tight race. Only JBB's first entry has South Carolina winning it all (Boo!!!) and everyone
else has UConn winning. If the Gamecocks take it all, JBB will run away with it.
On the LadyVolNation front, DoggyDaddy is at 470 only 20 points behind the leader. And I'm
the only one with UConn winning. Now would'nt it be funny if I won...lol.
GO HUSKIES!!

Straight from the Dog
I'm really looking forward to this weekend. Some great games with the chance of some more upsets.
Phil wrote a great article on conference performance both postive and negative.
If you are looking for more upsets, you should look towards the Pac12 and SEC. They each had four teams that were upset in the first two rounds. So who would that be?
Well, the SEC has only two teams in the Sweet Sixteen. Will that be 1 seed South Carolina? They take on 5 seed North Carolina. Nope, no upset here. 1 seed Louisville playing No. 4 Tennessee. God, please, NO upset. But this one is more possible, sad to say.
I'll tell you what. I'll go with Creighton as the only upset and be very happy!!! GO BLUE JAYS!!

Rickea Jackson, maybe the best player in the portal has chosen Tennessee. The former Mississippi State forward is a really good addition to the Lady Vols. Jackson led the SEC in scoroing at 20 PPG before announcing she was leaving MSU in January. Add her to Horston and Key along with incoming highly regarded recruit Justine Pissott and you have another at least Sweet Sixteen team. And a contender for the SEC title. South Carolina losses Henderson, Grissett and Saxton. That evens things up a bit.

It wouldn't be a blog without some crazy from an Orange Idiot. With the addtion of Jackson
and Minnesota guard Powell they do have more players but this comment?
" it is crazy that we could see Suarez, Puckett, Pissott, Miles coming off the bench Those 4 are starters on most teams"
If by "starters on most teams, he means over 50%, I would agree. But if by most, he means to be makingthe typical hyperbolic Tennessee fan comment and it's 99%, well, just another Orange Idiot.

Aliyah Boston of South Carolina, Caitlin Clark of Iowa, Rhyne Howard of Kentucky and 2021 Wade winner NaLyssa Smith of Baylor are the four finalists for the 2022 Wade Trophy. A great quartet of players. I'd give it to Boston.
Conference results
That said, looking at some of the results for the current year may be insightful.
I need to define some terms:
I use P5 to mean the power five conferences (Pac 12, B12, SEC, ACC, B10).
I’m temporarily going to use MM (think mid major but it’s not exactly that) to represent any conference that had more than one team in the tournament other than the P5, in other words, they had at least one at-large in addition to the automatic entry. This year, those conferences are the Big East, American, a 10, Missouri Valley, and West Coast. All conferences with only a single automatic entry are called “other”.
Not surprisingly W means win and L means loss, but I also use UW to mean an upset win, which happens when a weaker seeded team beats a stronger seed, and UL is the exact mirror image, an upset loss.
There were nine Upset Wins (which means there were nine Upset Losses) in the round of 64, and five each in the round of 32. (In the first four round, I treated games as being between equal seeds so they earned a win or loss but not an upset). Nine upsets in the round of 64 (32 games) means 28% of the games had an upset, while five in the round of 32 (16 games) means 31% of the games had an upset. (I hope to do some separate analysis to determine the expected number of upsets.)
The table below will show upset wins aggregated by conference for the round of 64 and the round of 32. I provide the detail in case anybody wants to double check or do their own analysis but for this discussion I’m only interested in the total.
How many upset wins were there by conference in the first 48 games of the NCAA conference?
As the table shows, the Big East did well, with three of the 14 upset wins. The ACC is tied with the Summit with two upset wins each, and seven conferences each had one.
If you group by type of conference, the P5 conferences accounted for five of the 14 upset wins, the mid major conferences accounted for four upsets, and the other conferences accounted for five upsets.
If we look at upset losses the table is shown below:
As you can see, over half of the upset losses were attributed to two conferences the Pac 12 and the SEC.
I'll break the tie by noting that the Pac 12 did manage an upset win, while the SEC is the only P5 conference not to record an upset win.
The B10 and B12 conferences each had two upset losses, but I haven’t figured out how to break the tie because each of them also had exactly one upset win.
Finally, both the ACC and West Coast conference had an upset loss.
None of the mid major conferences, including the Big East, had an upset loss.

Azzi Fudd was one of UConn's heroes last game against UCF. Her 4 three point baskets were all very timely. Overall, she went 4-10 from deep. However, her shooting % from beyond the arc is still 44.8%. People forget that 4-10 from deep is actually very good. Some expect every shot from Azzi to go in. After missing her first four threes, Fudd settled in and netted 4 of 6. That's clutch..!!
Her 4 late game free throws were a thing of beauty. Nothing but net & the 4-4 from the charity stripe raises her free throw average to 90.9%. We'll just call it 91%. The 2nd best free throw shooter is Aaliyah at 81.6% (31-38). She was 2-2 in the UCF game. As a team, the Huskies are now at 69.6% from the stripe. So, 70%. I think most UConn fans would take 70% from the stripe in any close game. 75% or 80% would be better, but beggars can't be choosy.
Next up is Indiana on Saturday at 2 pm. Doggy has the dirt on the Hoosiers, but one interesting stat is their 476 tries from 3 point range. UConn has 660 in the same number of games. Given UConn's height inside, Indiana may need to try many more threes than usual. Making or missing those extra threes may determine who wins. Or, it may not...
